Where have all the male teachers gone? I heard this on the news tonight and wondered if there is the same problem in your countries, apparently male teachers are becoming harder to find and not as many going through the teaching schools. Is this a real worry or just a passing phase? Your imput into this discussion would be appreciated.

We don't seem to have that problem in our school district. We have a good share of young men teaching, several of them actually went through school here and are back now as teachers. I don't know about others though.

Thanks for your comments, I really don't know why males are not joining the teaching schools, maybe they are all going overseas to get better paid jobs.

This is quite common in the UK too, where I worked as a TA as part of my college course our school only had ONE male teacher! There are so many schools which need men teachers as positive male role models. I am trained to work with children, sadly not as a teacher but in a nursery or Primary school as a TA but it is a female dominated field that men do not feel comfortable in. Certainly when I went to work in a few nurseries women can be quite hostile towards a guy wanting to work with children.

Thanks for your comment. I know what you mean about men in a women dominated job, a young male creche worker was accused and later imprisoned for abusing young children, it was a pretty high profile court case, and a lot of 'evidence' put forward, some of it, was to a lot of people, really ridiculous, it is still a case that comes up in the news and gets rehashed over again. I think this is why not many male teachers are going through teachers college now. I hope this will change as I believe boys need to have some sort of male role in their lives especially when there are a lot of solo mothers bringing up boys by themselves.

I don't see how it matters at all whether a teacher is a male or a female, it all sounds sexist to me.
