You Aren't Afraid of Heights... and I can prove it!

When I was in college I did some skydiving. The instructor at the local club told me that he would give me 50% off my jump fees for everyone I brought to his jump school. When I talked to fellow students, if they just told me they never had any interest, I accepted that. I mean, it's not for everyone. When people said they would love to, but they are scared of heights, I used this argument to prove to them they weren't. Me: What are you afraid of? Them: Getting hurt or killed. Me: Can you get hurt when you are 3500 feet in the air? Them: No, but what if the parachute doesn't open? Me: If your parachute doesn't open you have nothing to worry about until you hit the ground, right? Them: Yeah. Me: Then it isn't the heights you are afraid of, it's the ground. Them: Well, yeah. Me: Well, why do you spend all your time where you fear the most? ;~D

It isn't the ground that is the problem. It's the sudden stop when you reach the ground that seems to cause the majority of the damage. I consider jumping out of a perfectly good airplane to be an unnatural act. I can honestly say I have never felt the desire to engage in this activity.

My definition of a "perfectly good aircraft" is, any aircraft with a jump door. ;~D Besides, to me, a good aircraft is the only kind I want to jump from. I'd much rather go skydiving than bail out. :~D

plus have you ever seen a jump plane? With all that duct tape, and exposed screws, and such. I think your a lot safer jumping out, than trying to land in the thing.

Good way to try to convince someone to skydive : ). I went skydiving a few years ago and absolutely loved it. I don't think there is anything in the world that could give you the rush from free falling. Amazing! After my instructor pulled the chute and we were gliding down all I kept telling him was how awesome this was and how he had the greatest job in the world lol. And the landing was a lot smoother then I thought it would be. If I could figure out how to post pictures in discussions I would post mine.
