Who is the boss in your house...Is it the cat or the dog?

If you have animals in your house, it's almost a sure thing they rule the roost. What I want to know is from people who have both dogs and cats. Who is the boss in your house? My dog would like to be the boss but he is really laid back. He is just as happy to let the cats think they own the house. They often hiss at him, bat at him and try to put him in his place. He will dutifully back up. However, at other times, he is happy to pounce and catch them, always unsucessfully of course.

I have four cats and a dog. The largest (and second oldest) of the cats is the "Alpha lead animal" in the house. At 20+ lbs, he actually outweighs the dog by a bit, but he's not a bully... but he does have the "eat &%$# and die, mutt!" look down to a fine art, and the dog just slinks back to his bed. Actually, they are pretty good buds and will curl up together and go to sleep in a "bundle" when it's cold.

Our alpha cat is actually an old female. I know the look you mean, very well. In her case it's usually accompanied by hissing. Small dog, what kind?

You're welcome. I just loved the way you described the cat's look "eat &%$# and die, mutt!" because that is exactly what our cats say to our dog.

He's a dachshund, so he's only about 12 lbs... quite "peppy," but he knows he's met his match in the big cat. Thanks for the "best response!"

The only ones who live in here are my cat and myself, and the cat's definitely the boss! ;-)

Tigger - cat
Tiger, my 7 1/2 yr old, 20 pounder, orange tabby male, is "The Boss". He gets first use of the new catnip toy, first at the cleaned litter and boots out all of the other 3 cats if he decided their sleeping spot is suddenly 'his'. Now I have an assistance dog, a black lab named Hayden, and it has been war from first sight with Tigger. The other cats dont mind him, but the poor dog cant get a decent meal or a drink with Tigg harassing him verbally or physically (thank goodness I had his front claws declawed when he was a kitten). Tigger waits for him to turn the corner and jumps at him and yells horribly. Even after a year, Tigger will still not compromise. Hayden puts up with it, but once in awhile enough is enough and he'll bark quite loudly at Tigger, who'll then turn tail and run (the Wimp!). Hayden walks up to me after the barking and I pet him and he relaxes and takes a nap. My other male cat Nor will walk all over the restin Hayden and sometimes snuggle in his fur for a nap himself, but its no go with "the Boss", who glares at Hayden asd company from across the room before he falls asleep, too. LOL!

LOL. Thanks for sharing this story, it's so adorable. I just love it that your black lab is named Hayden. I have a thing about dogs and the names that fit them.

My dog rules over the cat and I rule over the dog. So the ranks in my house are Me, my dog Abby, then my cat Cookie.

If you are the top of the chain in your own home, over the animals, that is highly unusual.

The cats are def. the bosses of the house. They push around my two dogs, who just take it. One of my cats, Molly, is mean and often goes on fits. She'll attack anyone that gets in her way, and scream while she does it. The only other cat that can put her in her place is Monstro. He is a big cat, so she doesn't fight him. So I guess I'd say he is the boss of the house, even though he doesnt push around the dogs as much, and is laid back.

I find that male cats in general are pretty laid back. We have three males and none of them will try to lord it over the female cat. Also the male cats get along pretty well with the dog. The female cat wants attention only from whom she wants it when she decides she wants it, whether it is a human being or one of her male subjects over whom she rules. They are all fixed so the dominance is purely psychological which, of course, is any female cat's greatest strength.

it is exactly the same at my house. We have 7 cats, 2 boys 5 girls. The boys are a lot nicer to the dogs and people in the house. Duncan (one boy) often walks under the dogs neck and rubs agaisnt them when they are standing. And both boys put up with my a lot because I like holding them lol. 4 of the girl cats have very little petience for the dogs or people, and will hiss at them or slap at them. My cat, Adiana, (also a girl) acts like the boys, she is good with the dogs. But she only lets me pick her up and kiss her head, no one else! I feel special =P lol

i would say my dog because hes the only pet that stays in the house. we have these stray cats and the youngest cat looked like he wasnt eating and i would always put food down for him. i think what was happening is the stray cats would come and make him leave so now when i feed him either i stay out while he is eating or i bring him in the house so he gets some food. the second to youngest has been missing for awhile we think the stray cats made him leave. i keep hopping he will show up but the more time goes by and we dont see him i think something happened to him which really upsets me.

He may have been getting fed somewhere else as well. My mother in law had a cat that suddenly went away when we started transporting cats to the shelter when mom had to go to the nursing home. One day when they were emptying the contents of the house, this cat showed up all of a sudden. He was quite fat and sleek and happy. It was as if he came back to tell my mother in law that he had found a place to stay where they were spoiling him just fine. Don't worry.

Ha ha ha! We have 4 dogs and a cat. The largest dog is over 100 pounds... but the CAT totally runs our house. It's hilarious... he even has ME trained. But he can walk all over those dogs! If we didn't have the cat, then certainly, the big shepherd would rule. He's definitly second in command!!

The shepherd is just a diplomat. He is in charge but he lets the cat think it's in charge.

It's not good when the competition for affection makes them violent. Take care of this immediately.

LOL I have 3 dogs and a cat..one of them is a great dane, but the smallest and oldest of my dogs, Jazmine, is actually the boss. She is in charge and gets whatever she wants...the other 2 dogs dont dare mess with her..and the cat can't be bothered to care about ruling the house. He just wants to be loved when he wants his kitty love and he wants food and a comfy place to curl up in a ball and take a nap.. lol

Wow, that is quite a variety. Little dogs tend to be way more aggressive and top of the heap, in my opinion. It's unusual that the cat is laid back though. Go Jasmine.

Good for them. They are at the bottom of the food chain and need to defend themselves.

My cat is the boss. We bought this house for her. She has us totally wrapped. I swear she thinks we had our daughter for her. My cat is 14 and loves only me. Until I had my daughter. The old cat loves her. She actually goes looking for her...lol Now mix in dogs. My old girl has trained 6 dogs to date plus one of my Mom's. Plus a couple of cats. She's very good at training other animals. She meets them and then beats on them. She has no claws and only weighs 9 pounds but she's in charge and she knows it. Life will be so much less without the old girl in the house.

Maxxx - Maxxx is Michael's dog. or...Michael is Maxxx's boy.
My dog is that way with my son. Since he lives with his Dad and only comes here to visit on the weekends, the dog waits for him and misses him terribly when he's not here. If we say "Where's Mike?" the dog will run downstairs to the boy's bedroom and cry at his door even if he's not here. He is definitely this dog's boy. In fact, when we got Maxxx from the shelter he was moping in the bottom of his cage while people looked at the dogs. All the other dogs were barking. When Maxxx saw my son he all of a sudden jumped up from the bottom of his cage and started wiggling all over and crying for Mike. So basically he picked Mike instead of Mike picking him.
