What makes people old? Age or behavior?

It's weird, I thought about all the people I know. Friends, relatives, parents and I've realized that the number of years they've been around isn't what makes me think of them as old. I know 30 year olds that are so crotchety and mean that I think of them as old. And 70 year olds that I think of as my peers (With a little extra respect for being around longer of course.)because they're open minded and not afraid of the times. Some people, like my maternal grandmother stayed pretty much ageless to me because of the way she acted. She died in her 60's and the first thing I thought about it (after the screaming and crying was over) was "She's way too young." The old man that lives near me is younger than she was, but I think of him as one foot in the grave because he's just so angry sometimes. How do you feel about this?

You are definitely as young as you feel, or as young as you act... A very dear friend of mine just turned 89 years old, and he jumps right out on the floor and dirty dances with me when I am singing Mustang Sally at karaoke. He has a great set of lungs on him when he is belting out all of the Frank Sinatra and Frankie Laine tunes. He acts younger than most of the people there who are half of his age. Alternatively, I see those in their early twenties who barely move from their seats. These younger people act much older than my young friend of 89 years does.

If we do not slow down enough, maybe age cannot catch up with us. Thanks for the best response.

I believe that being old is a mindset, and you are as old as you want to be. I'm only twenty years old, but from my experience I've seen 40 year olds who act like they are 70, and I've seen 70 year olds who act like they are 40. I think that since the world "old" has no defined range by definition that it's all in one's head what is old.

There is always a saying that "You are as old as you fee". I believe in that. It's the behavior and the attitude. You could be ninety years old and still enjoy life. Being advanced in years doesn't mean that you should stop living and enjoying life. Sometimes people think that they can't do this or that just because they have already reached a certain age, but except for a few (mostly medical) reasons, that is simply not true.

I feel the same way as you do. Sometimes people look older or younger than their age depending on how they look physically and how they act or behave. We view people who are strict and conservative as old, and we see the easy going, adventurous and liberated ones as young. Stress greatly speeds up one's aging, just look at the overworked ones who hardly have time to relax. The way we feel manifests on the outside, and it really helps that we keep ourselves free from worries and stress, act young, feel young, in order to look young. :)

Behavior for sure. I've met people that had a very young outlook of life, that were old in age. I've seen the opposite happening as well. Of course you can't hide age physically, but I think it's the whole attitude and outlook on life that make some people seem younger or older than what they are.

Oh, I agree. It's behavior that makes people old. I'm hoping I never get old before my time. I don't want to be one of those people who sits around going "What's wrong with kids nowadays?". There's nothing wrong with kids; the world is just always changing. I hope to change right along with it.

Yes it is the behavior because then you'll realize your age and mindset and all.

I believe it's behavior. I look at the people that have been in my life for many years, that I know extremely well, and think to myself, "Wow, they're so immature! How can you be 30, and act like an irresponsible kid?" Anyway, I give much respect to my elders, for they do know many things, even if they aren't always in the know right now. I'm not even fully in the know right now, and I'm 28! I know a couple people that are only about 20-21 that act much older than their ages, and have earned my everlasting respect. Those that I know that I feel are not being the responsible people they should be, especially when dealing with their children, are the ones that I have no respect for at all. Age doesn't always play a major role in how we're perceived by others, it's our actions that speak for us. I know that a lot of times I feel really old, but then I get around my younger friends, and I feel like I have a chance at doing some things that I was never able to do when I was younger, and feel much younger as well. I love it, and wouldn't give it up for anything right now.

Age is just a number and I think you are only as old as you feel.
