As we walk down the path of life...

do you think that we are preordained to have certain miseries? Are these the lessons we are supposed to learn from? Or do you believe that each of us make our own destiny? I have faced many difficulties in my life's path; many of them valuable lessons by which I govern my life....so I was wondering am I the only one who feel this way?? What do you think?

Hi Tina. I think we somehow make our own destiny. I have the strange view that if life dishes out something horrible to me, I'll get through it to the best of my ability and I also see it as a valuable learning experience. For example, when I broke my wrist a few months ago, my husband was amazed at my relaxed attitude towards it (could have been the morphine they gave me!) lol. It was the first bone I had ever broken and in frightening circumstances for me, but I thought "that's life" and made the best of it. No point moping around I thought - I am not "my wrist". So I carried on working, making the jewellery, just simple stuff at first and very slowly. Then I gradually got better and better and when I went to see the surgeon for a follow up visit (I had to have a lot of metal work inserted as i'd smashed it to bits) he was amazed at the range of movement i'd managed to achieve. He told me that I'd done as good in 6 months as people achieve in 2 years. That was a valuable lesson for me. LOL

Thank you so much for sharing that with me...you should be very proud of your endurance and the end result sounds amazing....2 yrs worth of therapy within 6 months; on your own!!!! I do agree, that when things happen, our outlook can be an awesome force...like with you. I guess, I just had a last minute panic attack when I knew my star and rating were going to show...I am thrilled with the "9".

I'm totally lost when destiny is the subject. Come to think of it. When you apply for a job and you are so unlucky not to be hired, friends and family say 'there is something our there for you' or 'this job is not meant for you' or 'something will come up and you'll feel as lucky as can be' but the truth is.. you're not good enough. When you're heart is broken, they will say 'you're not meant for each other' or 'someone is out there waiting for you' or 'someone deserves you more' but the reality is.. you got dumped, busted. My point is, sometimes i think we created destiny to cover for our mistakes in life, sometimes i think we just want to blame a higher power that controls us to justify our failures, sometimes i think we sugarcoat to make us feel better. I say sometimes because i want to believe in destiny. I want to believe that whatever mistake i make is part of something beautiful that will happen in the future rather that think i'm stupid. I want to believe that someone is out there for me rather than face the truth that i got dumped. I'm totally lost in this subject because i don't know where i stand.

Although, we, as humans frequently reflect on our accomplishments and our failures....I see this as an opportunity to grow as a person and to learn from our mistakes.....None of us are perfect, and life is a learning experience.... I am not sure how mush of life I believe is pre-destined....I do believe in a "higher power".....and I believe in free will to make choices......I am also rational enough to know that whatever choices I make will have consequesnces....really if you think about it ......everything we do is a choice whether we choose to see it that way or not.. We choose to live where we do, be with our partners, what to eat, what to drink, where we work, which road to take to the grocery store.........I hope that this is making sense to you. I appreciate your participation in my discussion, sorry, if I rambled.....have a good day, my friend.

I think we learn so much from what happens to us, but inevitably it is down to us to decide whether to use this knowledge or ignore it. I know people who have experienced alot of turmoil in their lifes and have then put it to good use, while others seem to let things happen to them time and time again. I suppose it depends on how strong we are to deal with lifes experiences. I feel that to have had some discomfort in our lifes can make us a better person as we can put ourselves in other peoples shoes who may be going through the same thing. Just like here on mylot. Many people ask for advice and you can tell the people who respond with sincerity have been through it too. It is a great way to share your experiences and help others, so it does not become all bad. However, I know some people who just have the sh@ttiest lifes through no fault of their own, they just attract trouble. Then I am not so sure if we can govern our own lifes completely or whether some of it is preordained? Thanks for a thought provoking discussion +

I appreciate your kind words. This is a question that I have pndered myself, many times.....now that I have joined myLot....I just knew this was the perfect forum to see what others think about it. From your response, I think we see many things about this discussion in a similar manner. Thanks again.

Hi I know this is an old post but I find it interesting Yes and no as to the predomination, I lived with chronic depression for over 35 years, I felt hopeless, useless, helpless, powerless, and all the other negative stuff that comes with depression, In 2001 I attended a Life Skills Coaching course. And found out that I was a passive person. But there was and were ways to change that. All I had to do was agree to not be depressed any more I know this sounds ridicules but that is how it works. All you have to do is be willing to give up your crutch and then learn to walk on your own. They gave me the tools and I did the work and now I no longer feel all these terrible feelings I love my life and even though it is difficult I know I can and will be just fine thank you very much.

Good for you!!! RobinJ, I am so happy that you took the first step to your personal freedom....I love to hear about good things in life! Free will and consequences are the two great "forces" as I see it...Hope that did not sound insane and that you understand what I mean by that..... Being friends...I know that you also read all of the responses before you respond.... I have complete confidence that you will not only be fine but you will continue to be the wonderful, warm person that you are.....have a blessed day!

I like to think that life is like a road. There are always bumps in the road. You just have to slow down a little so that you don't wreck. There are many side roads that you can choose to take, some are better then others. Eventually you will get to the exit ramp. How you get to the exit ramp is your choice.

Skimpslick, first of all..I see that you are new to myLot and I want to welcome you to our wonderful community...I hope that you find it an enjoyable addition to your life. While I respect your opinion on this....I do not really agree with it...Please do not take this personally because I would never intentionally hurt someone's feelings and I know that you are new here. Even conventional religion believes in "free will" and choices....I do not understand how a peron's destination could be preordained and them still have free will; what would be the point?? I appreciate your participation in my discussion. Thank you and have a blessed day!

i believe that everything happens for a reason. So i guess that i would have to say the life is predestined. i could be wrong but thinking like that makes me more optimistic. if something goes wrong i just think that it happened for a reason and i need to learn from my mistake so it does not happen again.

i think some people are picked out to suffer which I don't think is fair. I think it does make us stronger people if we face it with our chin up and not give in becasue it hurts to face it

I just do not understand "harrassing" someone....if you do not agree with them..it is ok...leave them alone...I just can not rationalize the meanness. Maybe I am just a "nice" person and will never understand how they benefit from trying to make another human being feel badly about themselves. Thanks for your response, my friend.
