I don't understand why it is so important to have a diamond as the stone in an engagement ring. I guess people view having a diamond ring as a status symbol. I'd rather have a gemstone that I feel fits me rather than the gemstone that everybody gets. Rainbow moonstones are the gemstones that I feel really fit me and that's what I'd prefer to have in my engagement ring if I ever go engaged. So has anyone ever used a gemstone other than a diamond for their engagement ring? If not, or if you've never been engaged, what gemstone would you choose if you had to pick something besides a diamond?

I gave my wife a watch with diamond chips in it for our engagement. One of my friends gave the pink slip to his street rod to his wife as an engagement gift instead of a ring. He probably would have paid less for a diamond ring as his car was worth $6000 at the time. I think an engagement ring or gift should reflect the individual. I am sure that when you get engaged he will know what you like!

I don't get that either. Before diamond, pearl was the choice gemstone for engagement rings. I guess it varies. Now a lot of people are choosing sapphire. I'd rather have a gemstone that fits me too, but since diamond is my birthstone, I might actually go for diamond. But probably blue or green diamond. And I don't like large diamonds either. If I didn't go with diamond, I really like tsavorite garnet (the green garnet). I'd go for chrome diopside, but it's too soft to be considered for such a long term ring. I love rainbow moonstones. I put together a pendant with a pretty one that I really like. They're incredibly cheap for how pretty they are too.
