Is myLot a portal into another world for any of you??

It sure is for me! I spend countless hours every day in meetings, on the phone and writing numerous emails and business documents etc Being able to switch off from this every few hours and type happily away to responses and topics on this site is a significant escape for me. Although I am still typing much the same as I do for work (in essence) I am typing on my own terms and in respect to my own interests. It is for enjoyment rather than necessity so is therapeutic as a result! Money sure as heck has nothing to do with it as I would starve very quickly if I relied on myLot participation to make serious cash! Anyone else relate to this and feel the same?

I have written my reason to join mylot. you can see that in my discussion. my first reason is to improve my english. my english is not that good especially in writing. i only got 223 in TOEFL and also i only got 3 from 6 in written test (213 = 550). after 2 months in mylot i think that i've developed my writing skills quite much. i don't hesitate to write anymore and i innovate myself to use different sentences. second i want to make friends from all over the world. third i want to know what everyone usually talks about. and last is the bonus payment.

Great reason to join and participate! I am not sure where your English writing skills were prior to joining but judging by your response they seem pretty solid now! Thanks for responding.

Yes, all those reasons are excellent.

Thumbs up - Happy to be part of this community
For me MyLot is an anchor to reality on occasion. As I am at home a lot of my time this is theplace where I can come for some company, good conversation, enjoyable debate, a good giggle with friends and, although it's not essential, a few pennies in the bank.

What an interesting way to describe it! "An anchor to reality"..... The complete opposite of my terminology yet very relevant and understandable! I appreciate your viewpoint and thanks for responding.

I find myself in that very same position. Retirement has forced me to stay home more often than not due to the limited funds social security provides.

I love this site, I've learned so much more about other cultures and geography than I ever did when I was in school. Too bad kids can't use it to gain a better perspective on geography, they'd have so much fun learning here.

That is a wonderful point, so many people are using Mylot to learn to read and write English. I'm also learning the difference between British, Australian and American English so in a sense I'm also learning a foreign language.

myLot certainly has a space, which by the way we have all created. It can be a sanctuary, strangely, perhaps because of the unique friendships created. It is a switch off, or over to a place that is different from the normal grind of life.

Absolutely James. I'm mindful of just what is happening here on myLot, and probably with other chat forums. We tend to prefer to speak to people via a computer screen, instead of our next door neighbours. A friend was collating statistics and it was found that 27 million American households consist of a person living alone, compared to 25 million households with a husband, wife, and child. So there are allot of people at home with no-one to talking to them except the TV and computer! Scary in a way that we are now getting used to this type of lifestyle. Regardless, and as you have experienced too and we have discussed before, people still get their feelings hurt on a virtual forum. So is this the way we will now grow as a human species? Human evolution takes many turns. What will we evolve into?

Yes, at least communicating via a Virtual world is better than not communicating at all.

This place is definatley an escape from the bump and grind of day to day life for me too. My hubby always tells me that he couldn't realax by sitting and staring at the screen, but it's great for me. I don't think there are too many people here that are completely relying on this place for the money, I know I'm not. LOL!

The funny thing is...... Your hubby says that he can't understand how one can relax staring at a screen yet he probably spends hours a week in front of the TV!! Thanks for responding.

I agree with you mylot is a nice escape from real life if you will. But your so right in the fact that no one could really be on here with idea of wanting to make any real money. It is more for entertainment and being able to post freely to your emotions than for payment. I sure everyone finds it enjoyable or they really wouldn't bother. I can relate!

The money for me is just a byproduct of my participation. If it ever accumulates into something worthwhile then so be it! Thanks for responding.

One of the things I love the most about MyLot is all of the new friends I have made here. Sometimes MyLot can be a great break from reality, and sometimes it is a very serious place to discuss some very important issues in life. It is a place to laugh, to cry, and to share stories with our friends. It is where I come when I need an outlet in the middle of the night. It is where I come when nobody seems to understand what I am going through. There are so many wonderful people here. Money is worth nothing compared to the friendship found here.

MyLot is somewhat therapeutic for me, as well-- a nice diversion; an opportunity to write on a wide variety of topics, but not with a "deadline looming." As a technical writer, I pretty much write every day... but it's very controlled and specific; lots of following instructions to the letter as to how a piece of documentation is supposed to turn out. I want to say that "money has nothing to do with it," but money DOES have a little to do with it... in the sense that I previously used to spend some time posting in a variety of hobby forums I definitely did NOT get paid for, and now I am choosing to post here most of the time, instead. But I certainly wouldn't call this "earning money" beyond a basic being able to buy a decent dinner, every couple of months or so. But I suppose it all adds up.

I can understand 100% where you are coming from in relation to work writing versus writing for pleasure. No deadlines and on your own terms! Far more enjoyable! Thanks for responding.

I do relate. I've learned so much more about geography than I ever did in school plus made some really awesome friends. The money is nice but if I had to survive on it I'd be a baglady.
