Is being fat genetic?

Is being fat genetic or is it from not controlling your appetite and being lazy? I think we all know someone who can eat all they want and whatever they want and never gain weight. Then some of us just have a little dessert and see our waistline grow right before our eyes.

I think obesity can be a bit of both. Certainly if you look at families when they are out shopping - most of the family members are usually all large, even the kids, which I find really disturbing. It seems to have reached epidemic proportions, certainly here in Oz and no doubt in the US. Portion sizes are increasing to ludicrous levels, food adverts come at you all the time, the price of "real" food is increasing and our modern lifestyle all serve to help us sit on our a$$es in front of the idiot box, computer or whatever. Parents are too fearful of perverts to let their kids run free like I did when I was a child.

Some people definitely gain weight easier than others - I know because I'm one of them! That's down to your metabolism I guess which I think must be inherited because I have the same body type as loads of others in my family. I'm only a little heavier than I should be but inside me is a massively overweight person trying to get out! I also think that the way you are fed as a child plays a big part. If you see an overweight parent the likelihood is they will have overweight children. If your parents have unhealthy diets the chances are you will have been brought up eating unhealthily too and it's quite difficult to change your eating habits when you've been accustomed to eating certain foods.

Yes, it can be genetic also. But every time it is not the case. Fatness may be caused due to other reasons also. May be some medical problem which occur in our body. Excess eating without doing much physical work. I think to burn your calorie is the most important, if you are unable to burn your calories, in comparison to carlories you get from your food...then it will lead to obessity. Excercise would the best option in case of fatness.

To a great extent it is probably genetic, but it is also a lifestyle as well. I know for myself that I have always had a tendency to gain weight easily. My own mother was always overweight and I'm sure I inherited the tendency to gain weight from her. As a result, I have always had to work hard to maintain a healthy weight.
