Asthma |

What is asthma and how are allergies related to it? Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by airway obstruction, which is at least partially reversible with or without medication, and it is associated with increased bronchial responsiveness to a variety of stimuli. Asthma is often associated with allergy. Risk factors for developing asthma include: Sensitization to indoor allergens (e.g., house-dust mites, animal dander's, cockroaches). Sensitization to outdoor allergens (e.g., Alternaria). Early exposure to tobacco smoke. The allergic response in the airways may lead to increased airway inflammation and hyper responsiveness. Rhinitis and asthma involve the upper and lower respiratory tract. Patients with allergic rhinitis may report increased asthma symptoms during the pollen season.

2. wellamoose (1144) | 2 years ago | My husband has chronic asthma and my youngest daughter has exercise-induced asthma. My husband's asthma is definately linked with his allergies. He has indoor, outdoor and everything in between allergies. My daughter also has some allergies, but nothing like my husband. She was just diagnosed with asthma a few months ago. She was having a terrible time in P.E. class. She was getting short of breath everytime she had to run. I took her to the doctor and he gave her an inhaler. She takes it right before P.E. and she has been fine ever since. She gets really bad coughing fits when she over-exerts herself. She just uses her inhaler and it makes it all better.

3. cherbe (2310) | 2 years ago | That is so very true Kathy! My son has allergies and asthma and this time of year makes him worse because all the pollens and stuff are starting to come out. He likes being outside but has to wait sometimes to prevent some of his asthma attacks. Great discussion

5. abbey19 (1485) | 2 years ago | Thank you for your very details description of exactly what asthma is, because a lot of people don't really know. My hushand is an asthma sufferer and has been for years. In fact, two nights ago we had a meal at a restaurant and he had an asthma attack ten minutes after we'd finished the meal. It was fettucine carbonara. I found out that they didn't use real bacon, but those little bacon bits - and they contain msg. I told them they ought to warn people so things like that don't happen to other people.

6. gsl3692 (436) | 2 years ago | I only knew that allergy and asthma are related until I went to doctor and diagnosed as asthma. All along, I knew I have a very sensitif nose and cannot breath properly when the weather change from hot to cold too fast. Or even from a very cold air cond room to a humid weather outside the room. It all started when i catch cold and develop to cough...none stop for 6 months, then finally, I cannot breath and went to a doctor and was given gas to help me breathing. Then only I was told that I could have develop the asthma due to the allergy problem. So, now whenever, I catch cold or begin to cough, I will quickly go to my doctor before develop to ashtma.

8. bhubaneshwar (5515) | 1 year ago | Yes, the information is correct. In medical science asthma has no cure. The inhalers may supress it but does not cure, the steriods have their own side effect, but it can be cured by 'breathing exercises' of Ramdeb Baba of India. For details log to-www.divyayoga.com You may write to me at-dr.b.saraf@gmail.com Check my profile, respond to my discussions, if you like them, be my friend for better communication, thanks.

10. Bizziebod (2156) | 1 year ago | Hi Kathy, I've recently been diagnosed with having asthma too, although mine is brought on by the damp weather more than anything. Which living in the UK is pretty often. I didn't know about the other effects though.
