Bears In The Cities (again) |
|
Oak grove is about 35 miles from Minneapolis a major city in Minnesota. With winter's cold stretching into early April, there could be a few more bear sightings than usual in Oak Grove. Bears have made themselves at home in the northern Anoka County city for several years. But when the cold lasts longer and vegetation hasn't had as much time to grow, they are more apt to find food closer to humans, such as pet food, bird food and trash, said Bryan Lueth, acting north metro area wildlife manager for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. 1. bwrattybaby (4947) | 2 years ago | That's bad. I have been seeing things like this all over the news all around everywhere. Heck a few weeks ago I seen where they had to capture a bear in a city near us. We go to town a few times a month and the place is a pretty busy place. See dead dear and other wild animals all over the place. People have been told not to put their garbage or pet food outside cause of all this. I can see it out here in the boonies where I live but in the cities. Hope you have a great day/evening.

2. susaneverson (4945) | 2 years ago | A bears' natural foraging ground is usually several square miles wide. Humans have left very few areas where a bear can do natural foraging, the only thing left for them to do is forage in our garbage and gardens. I am probably not the popular view point but we are the ones encrouching on their range. I don't read the news as I find all news bias and not always factful and depressing, so these are just my opinions to what you have posted. Susan

webeishere (11193) | 2 years ago | When I was small I'd pick blueberries at my Aunts farm about 150 miles north of me. One day as picking them I heard a rustle. About 100 feet away was a Black bear and her 2 cubs. I never ran so fast in all my life. Hahahahaha! Thanks for the response also.

byfaithonly (5702) | 2 years ago | Oh my I can imagine you ran but what a neat opportunity, seeing the bears in their natural habitat. I know on the same camping trip we were taking a hike along the river, my son, daughter, her friend, our shi shu puppy and myself. The kids heard some rustling in the woods off the trail, I didn't hear it, and we hassened our pace back to camp.

4. jennybianca (5865) | 2 years ago | Do you get to see any bears from your home? I suppose it's only natural that as bears loose their fear of humans, & they can smell their food, they are going to find their way to human food sources. Occasionally we see stories on TV of bears that can do some damage, in their search for food. I have only once seen a bear in real life ( as opposed to the zoo), and that was in Canada in the Rockies. We get koals and occasionally kangaroos are in the city now. Usually they are searching for water. Koals are common in my area. We have koala road signs up, but even so they do get hit on the roads.

5. retardedrugrat (3682) | 2 years ago | Most of the bears in our area tend to stick to the mountains. I've only ever seen 3 in the wild, 2 from a distance and one a little closer. I remember a story I heard on the news once though that highlights the sheer stupidity of some people. A family went on a camping trip. Mom, Dad, Aunts, Uncles, and kids. As they sat eating their lunch one day, a bear wandered into their camp. I guess he/she/it was hungry. The mother of the group thought it would be a great idea to get a photo of the bear licking honey off her 5 year old daughters hand. Needless to say, the child lost her hand and almost her life. If it hadn't been for the quick thinking of the male family members rushing the bear and attacking it, the child wouldn't be alive today. If it hadn't been for the stupidity of that girls mother in the first place though, a family outing wouldn't have turned to tragedy.

8. RachelleDD (366) | 2 years ago | We get a few black bears around here, not close to the town tho, but we have moose, not an unusual sight to see a big ole moose trotting up the street...big problem with them here in newfie land and they are not even native to our province, they were brought in here back in the 60s I believe, just two of them..guess thats all it took...they have taken many a life on our highways..

9. dixielol (1150) | 2 years ago | Luckily, we dont have bears in Kentucky. I can imagine hearing my dogs barking late at night & opening the door to see a bear standing there. That would probably scare me to death.
