Questions On TV's and Instructions For Making A TV Stand |
|
Did you know that they no longer make cabinet style TV’s. I am referring to the kind that is made into the cabinet and is on wheels. They were once popular. That is the kind of TV we have and we like it really well but it is on the blink. It goes black and white and you have to turn it off for a few minutes to get the color back. It also just goes off and you have to turn it back on. It has been a great TV and I hate to think of replacing it. However, we know that it is going to have to be replaced and soon. We have been looking at TV’s and trying to decide what one to purchase when we do have to purchase one. I hate it that I will have to also purchase a stand to put the new TV on. I was pleasantly surprised when I got my new Lowes newsletter and they had the instructions for making a really nice TV stand. It is exactly what I want when we have to buy the new TV. I thought that some of you may also be interested in these directions. They can be found here:http://www.lowescreativeideas.com/Woodworkers/0407/tvstand.asp It is really nice and would be a great piece of furniture for any home. What kind of TV do you have? What is a good brand? Is one kind better than another? I am the kind of person that likes to be armed with knowledge when I purchase anything new. I am just confused with all the new kinds of TV’s.

2. Polly1 (7003) | 2 years ago | Good luck on finding a tv. I just have a 19 in. tv that I bought at Walmarts. Our tv got fried when our wires got hit by lightning. That tv stand/cabinet does look nice. Here is a good idea you might be interested. I have seen people do this before and it looks nice. Measure the opening in your old tv cabinet, try to find a tv that would fit in the opening. You and your hubby sound like handy people, you could easily take the old tv out of the cabinet and put another one in its place. You would probably have to have a shelf inside for the tv to set on. I bet with your imagination, it wouldn't be too difficult to do. I have also seen people put aquariums inside old tv cabinets, that looks nice too. The old style cabinet tv's were a nice piece of furniture.

villageanne (5824) | 2 years ago | You are very welcome for the instructions. I hope you can get it made. It is really pretty isnt it? I think we probably will just end up choosing on the spur of the moment what brand to purchase. There are just so many choices out there these days. I have to say that I agree with your husband. We try to buy smart more than cheap.

villageanne (5824) | 2 years ago | You are very welcome. I am glad that I could help you. It is a beautiful stand isnt it? We dont have much luck with things that we buy at walmart. We end up returning them only to get a replacement that dont work either. So we have just about quit shopping at walmart.

6. crazynurse (5686) | 2 years ago | Interesting that you should post this Village. My father had a cabinet TV for YEARS. It finally died a few years ago. When it died, he couldn't bear to just haul it to the trash. He came over and asked my hubby, who is a genius with woodworking and other odd jobs, if perhaps we would like to have the cabinet portion. Well, my hubby and father took the guts out and hauled them to the trash, but kept the cabinet. It had no back, just the sides and top. My hubby made doors for the cabinet, inserted a shelf in the cabinet and tacked a piece of thin fiber/wood board to the back. He managed to stain the doors to match perfectly to the sides/top. The gorgeous finished piece (which everyone comments on when they see it) now lives in our 'florida room' (recently enclosed deck) and houses my table linens and non-breakable dishes that we use in the summer out by the pool. It freed up so much room and needed space from my dining room hutch! My father beams each time that he comes over and sees the cabinet. He always tells everybody, "That was my old TV!" Just shows that anything can be reused/recycled!

7. ElusiveButterfly (8789) | 2 years ago | This is a great stand and one that my hubby could make in his free time. The one we currently have is made of cheap materials and will eventually collapse if it gets a ding in it and get wet. If you are lucky enough you can find materials at the local lumbar yard that are somewhat flawed and can get it for a lower price. Don't be afraid to dicker on an item. Hubby has been fortunate when shopping for materials for a project. He finds a board that has a ding in it and they give him 25-50% off the cost. Of course you can always work around the flaw or hide it with paint when you finish it!

villageanne (5824) | 2 years ago | Sarina, That is great. My husband gets some great boards at work for free. They package the large equipment parts and such with really nice boards. He brings them home and removes the nails. They are great for woodworking projects. Thanks for your comment

8. organiclady35 (6179) | 2 years ago | I can recommend that you try looking at www.ciao.com to read reviews on different appliances. If you want an ethical appliance try the following brands of TVs: Akai, Bang & Olufsen, Casio, Grundig, LG and Sanyo. You can also try looking at www.gooshing.co.uk or something similar to that which will show brands for the US. I am not sure if that website also has a .com version. The tv type you mention sounds like one of the original ones which were first available in the UK back in the 1950s. I saw some old footage on a programme the other night. The screens were quite small and the wooden cabinets were much bigger and they had doors which closed to hide the screen when not in use. We have a fairly large size tv which sits on special stand and at the bottom there is room for a video player and our satellite box and dvd player. I hope my suggestions work. If you simply want to compare prices Kelkoo or price runner are sites I use. I am not sure if they have a .com one as well.

9. twbigdogsgirl (1027) | 2 years ago | That is a great cabinet! Right now we are using a serving bar type piece of furniture for a TV stand. It works, but I don't like how much room it takes up, although it fits the TV perfect. We have a Panasonic TV and it seems to be working fine. We have had it for about three years now. We still have my very first color TV in the bedroom. It is a GE and is about 20 years old. It has been acting goofy for the past couple of years. When we turn on the TV to watch a DVD, it does this weird flipping of the picture before it straightens out. I hate to get rid of it yet even though my husbnad wants to buy a new. It still works and until it dies completely, I intend to use it and not spend the money.

10. howellslj (1014) | 2 years ago | I know what you mean. I have no clue about these new tv.s We've had the same one for 9 years and it came used. It's fixing to go to the bedroom and a newer one in its place. I don't like the idea of a tv in the bedroom, but I sleep alone half the week and I don't have to turn it on. Why would you put something else in the bedroom that has to be "turned on?" Oops, I'm off topic. I think we're looking at a flat screen to hang over the mantle (so expensive) so kiddo can't lick it and push the buttons. So we may not need a stand. However, with the expense of it, we may decide to buy one that needs a stand. This stand design you found is pretty. It's not huge and clunky.
