Torticollis (wry neck) is a congenital or acquired condition of limited neck motion in which the child will hold the head to one side with the chin pointing to the opposite side. It is the result of the shortening of the sternocleidomastoid (neck) muscle.
My son was born with this condition. He had to have a lot of physical therapy to correct this and now, at 5 years old, he still rests his head titled to the left on his left shoulder a lot. It is not nearly as bad as when he was a baby. His head laid TOTALLY on his shoulder from the time he was born until about 2 or 2 1/2 yrs old. Apparently, his muscle did not form completely and had to be stretched out. Even now, if you touch the left side of his neck, like press on it or massage it, he says it's tender.
Anyone else have a child like this? I have tons of pics, but nothing on the computer and my scanner is broken. I have one that shows exactly how bad it is. He's 8 months old and he looks terrible. He had to wear this brace thing out of plastic tubing that held his head in place. He had to wear it for several hours thruout the day.

Glad to hear that this condition isn't as bad as it was earlier in his life. I remember seeing children who had problems many years ago that never were addressed and as adults it can be seen in their physical appearance. Medical advancements now give hope to the children with conditions such as these to receive treatments that correct the problem.
