Can you learn anything from games? |
| |
| We have come across enough raging battles between adults and children. I want game! No, no game! Me want! No, go to bed! Give me game! *smack* :P Personally, I view games as just another form of entertainment. If the kid is not playing PC/video games, he will still find another alternative. Why do we stop children from playing such games anyway? Is there really no good and all bad? Please check out http://hubpages.com/_lww/hub/rtk3 . I am so excited to share this hub with you. It is a compilation of 8 lessons I have learned from a classic strategy game called Romance of the Three Kingdoms III that I first started playing more than 10 years ago. Even if you haven't played this game before or do not play games at all, still, go take a look at my article. I think it will make an interesting read nevertheless since I made the lessons applicable to real life, and wrote them in a hopefully humorous manner. Support wizzy, alright? After you've checked it out, let me know again if we can learn anything from games. Do share your thoughts. ;-) PS.: For those who may be "interested" to know, I have been ripped again. I am not keen to post another ranting article to disrupt the lives of myLotters. If you are interested in the details, please see http://lordwarwizard.blog... . Thanks. | | Can you learn anything from games? | | | | |

| | too much of anything is not good, kids want to sit in front of a video game and never do anything else, they don't to go outside, play sports, social with their friends, talk to their family eat or bath at times, that is not good. some games are bad teaching things like killing some games are great like scrabble they are learning new vocabulary. You have to watch out what games you kids play and what are the good benefits in these games and how to moderate them so they do they other things in life they should be doing as well. | | | | | | |

| | I gave you an example of a good, and I also said it depended upon the game, scrabble being a good one for learning. my point was basically too much of anything is not good. | | | |

| | Poor baby, sorry to hear that your thread was ripped again by this ??? I hope the forum will do the necessary action right away. Like what I'm telling you, the game seems complicated for me. I like something girly. Any games about bunny you can recommend? Still, I will give this game a try. I've already downloaded it a while ago. I hope I still have the time to play though. Can you be my opponent there? Let me figure out this game first and I will let you know in 10 years, LOL! | | | | | | |

| | Baby, hate to disappoint. I don't really play girly games so nothing to recommend from my end. :P A pity - this game isn't multiplayer. So it is just you and your computer opponents. :PP | | | |

| | Kids get some kind of fun from playing online games. But aside from the fun thing, I think they are not getting anything except learning how to live a life of delusion. I noticed a certain kind of game which makes the kids kill people. I thought that was too violent because you could actually see blood and flesh splattered on the walls. At some point you see people losing their body parts, etc. I noticed this when I went to an internet cafe which caters to games much of the time. It seemed like the players were enjoying their "game" so much, cheering and killing happy. It makes me think now, did the Virginia Tech gunan play games like this? Maybe it is interesting to make a study. | | | | | | |

| | Actually, there are many genres and killing isn't really all gaming is about. :P | | | |

| | Funny52f, violence is certainly a consideration, however, there is more to games than simple violance. Many games can help with educational goals, motor skills, as well as logical thinking. However, I believe we still need to find a way to minimize potential backlashes from violent games. | | | |

| | Hi lordwarwizard! I'm sorry to hear about these people taking your posts. I assume you reported it, and others who've saw it? There are some "bad eggs" floating around here, I certainly do hope myLot will take the steps to correct. As for the video games, I'm not a player, I think the "Atari" Space Invaders, was the last I played! After that I was so busy working & raising kids, just never got into it! My kids do though, I have one son who is so into it, that's all I hear, (and do not understand:). I suppose it teaches good hand co-ordination, I know that even little kids gets really good at using the controls, as I have a 6 & 9 year old Grandchildren that do really well. I will watch the rest of your discussion, so may be this Grandma can learn something! :) | | | | | | |

| | My feelings are that kids should be restricted on their computer games. They need exercise and fresh air as well. They need to learn about nature and the importance of exercise. They need to run and climb, explore and shout... not be stuck in front of a computer for the majority of their lives. I think the day should be broken down into sections, also with chores added, because these too are a valuable lesson for later life. They should have a daily routine, something like this.... Get up, wash/shower and clean teeth. Breakfast Chores School Activity time outdoors (at least 90 minutes) Dinner Help with table clearing and washing up. Computer Games (no more than two hours) Wash/Shower and clean teeth I'm sure this would make for a much happier, healthier life for kids than sitting non-stop in front of a computer. Brightest Blessings my dear friend. Bed | | | | | | |

| | I think different games have different values of education. For example I would think that strategy games are good for learning strategies and can develop the lateral thinking skills. I think there is a lot to be gained from Sim Games, they can teach you the value of budgets and forward planning. Other games can develop the senses, the speed of a reaction can be important in sports. Again it is all about balance. Spending too long on a game can be very counter productive. Spending enough time on their to learn the skills, whilst enjoying the game can be beneficial. | | | | | | |

| | I have never had the time, or desire to play the games. However after seeing the hubpage link, that was quite interesting to say the least. Thanks for sharing it. I think it is good, but also, too much game playing no matter how educational, intelligent, or exciting and fun it may be, doesn't substitute inter socialization. Also, why did you get ripped off again? Are you turning this it? I hope so. Blessings my friend, M&M | | | | | | |

| | Games can be fine as long as chores and schoolwork or real work is done on time. Also as long as that is not all you do on the computer. This machine is fantastic and to treat as a toy is insulting really. I hope you find the balance in developing the eye hand coordination. | | | | | | |

| | I definitely think we can learn from video games. Though many might think hand-eye coordination is their strongpoint, with the exception of periphial-based games and the new Nintendo Wii system, I don't think the coordination you get from pressing buttons is probably all that valuable in real life. I think their main strenghth is actually in mental power. I like your 8 lessons you learned from Romance of the 3 Kingdoms (I've never played it, but I've been a fan of its mindless hack 'n' slash brother, Dynasty Warriors for a while, and I'm downloading it now), but even games that don't seemingly require as much brainpower as a strategy game can be beneficial. They can help you become used to making decisions quickly (tactical action games, for example), and you can also become accustomed to keeping track of several variables at any given time (RPGs and strategy games, defintely). Of course, there are also many games that are intended to be educational, and they're not all spelling and math games for kids. Some of the most popular First Person Shooters such as the Medal of Honor series and the Call of Duty series have tons of historical information contained within them that is regularly presented to the gamer (although most people, including myself, skip these sequences). | | | | | | |
