How do you feel sitting besides a crying person?

Suppose you are sitting with a person, two of you. And suddenly that person starts crying, tears flowing from the eyes. What's your first reaction? I confess I feel much embarassed and lost. The first thing I think of is that I must help... but how can I be helpful-- that's the question which gets me confused:( And I'm really not confident (and sometimes afraid!) to ask the person him/herself!
What are your reactions?

I too would find the situation embarrassing, and I would find it easier to give the person a hug, both male and female, I think some people prefer to be hugged and nothing said. I used to have to deal with my mum crying because she had been upset by my father, it was difficult to deal with because I couldn't take sides, I disagreed with how mum was being treated and I could feel her pain which made me sad too.

Giving hugs.... well, it does help but I fear some people don't like it as well. At least not the people around me. But I must try it I think :)
Thanks for the suggestion:)

hmmm... :D it's hard to talk especially when you're crying so i let him/her cry first.. then when he's ready to speak, i'll let him tell his sentiments and the reasons why he is crying...
try to listen keenly about when the person is saying... maybe he just needs affirmation of her feelings than advice... i usually give advice when i think the person needs one :D

That's a fine solution. I too think it's best to do. Mostly people just want to be heard and that gives them the peace of mind:) ...though I don't give advices for that's difficult for me.

If the crying sparks a sense of compassion deep within yourself, you'll know what to instinctively, if it does not, you'll still know what to do...
All humans, well most, have this built in sense and it truly guides us in situations like these...
Don't let this question trouble you any longer... if it ever happens, you'll know what to do and it will always be the Right Thing! :)

That's a good idea :) but I fear if that person minds my asking as sometimes people hate to be interferred in such situations.
