The early bird gets the worm .. or does it?  email this discussion to a friend?

I was drinking a cup of coffee early this morning and watching the wild birds searching in the grass for worms and grubs to feed their young ones with ..

Suddenly a blackbird pounced and pulled out of the grass an enormous worm .. at least a foot long .. one of the hatchlings quickly scurried over to get the feast from it's mum ..

Without waiting for mum to chop up the worm the baby bird snatched it from mum and started swallowing .. and swallowing .. and swallowing .. fascinated I wondered how such a small bird could cope with such a long worm ..

What a racket the mother bird was making .. jumping up and down in front of the hatchling .. the baby bird appeared to be trying to wipe the worm out of it's mouth .. the mother bird kept trying to snatch it but the baby bird wasn't going to let go of it's breakfast prize ...

Several minutes went by .. squawking .. frantic flapping and much jumping up and down later .. I decided the poor baby bird must be choking by now .. so I grabbed my Marigolds .. and dashed outside at a fast hobble (I'm mobility disabled!) ..

The mother bird flew into the hedge and harangued me .. the baby bird stopped dead ... I crept closer .. then I was able to snatch the worm .. several inches of worm appeared back from the baby birds gullet and I threw the remains over the hedge .. eugh!!

The mother bird instantly dashed over as soon as I moved away .. and made a real fuss over the baby bird .. then gave it a real scolding and a peck on the head as punishment for trying to scoff a meal bigger than it could manage ...

Phew .. their goes one very lucky baby bird .. had I not been watching this morning .. I wonder what would have happened??

Have you ever 'rescued' a wild animal or bird?? What did you have to do??

I tried to rescue a little sparrow baby when I was at school. It was sitting huddled under the ventilation outlet and I took it to the science rooms thinking the lab technicians would give it food or something(they kept animals there) but they wouldn't ,they said it might have an illness and to put it in the hedge on the sports field. It was very sad but I couldn't do anything else.
I rescued a mouse from our cat which lay there not doing anything.I put it in the old gerbil cage and found it some food but it died anyway.I think it was just too stressed from being so nearly eaten. Now if I rescue a mouse or bird from the cat,I put it outside where he cant get at it as it has just as much chance outside and maybe is less stressed.

I can't recall saving any animals recently. But I enjoyed your story. I have never seen a worm as long as a foot. Are you sure it wasn't a baby snake? lol. I think you did the right thing, but I probably would have called 911 to the rescue...lol.

A couple of years ago the kids in the neighbourhood befriended a baby squirrel. We soon realized that its parents were no longer around. The kids were feeding it pieces of muffin and stuff. This was out on the street. Next thing I know the poor thing is at my back door scratching on the door wanting to get in. We called animal rescue because we knew he was so tiny and incapable of climbing that we thought a bigger animal would catch it and destroy it. We were told to get an animal cage and hold onto it until they could get to our place.

We lured the squirrel into the cage. The poor thing cried for about an hour and then eventually went to sleep. BTW, don't feed a squirrel peanut butter - it will stick in their throat and they will choke on it.

The next day the girls found a dead squirrel at the very back of our yard covered in blood and insects. We told them to stay away from it because of rabies. I don't recall whether that was another baby or the parent. Personally, I'm not fond of squirrels. We had a terrible time with them at my parents' house. One fell down the drain pipe and came up through the drain in the basement. It went on a rampage of our house tearing apart all of my mother's house plants. We finally got it locked in a basement room and opened the windows but it refused to go out. So there was only one other thing we could do. I won't say anymore.

Wow Patootie! I have never saved a bird from harm. Nor have I done this with a wild animal. The only animal I had saved was a chipmunk that my cat decided to play with. I am sure that once he finally got away that he probably had a heart attack.

The little bird was fortunate that you had been there. It is amazing that the mother bird didn't give you a thrashing too. I have seen mother birds swoop at people who get to near their babies.

That would depend on what you considered rescued. We have given shelter and food to stray animals before. Have even spent money on vet bills for them. But nothing like saving them from choking to death. But I have managed to climb a tree before to get my crazy cat out of it.

Hi patootie, I just popped in for the weekend and decided to check up on some of my MYLOT buddies. I see you have joined search and rescue! No one can tell a story like you can. I could just "see" it all happening while I was reading this post. I must say it did make me giggle just a little when you were pulling the worm out of the baby birds mouth......just like spaghetti.....yuck.

Thank God you got to the bird and saved it's life. Was a greedy little bugger wasn't it? I saved a baby skunk one time. I was walking home and seen a mother skunk get hit by a train and there on the track next to its mother a baby skunk. I picked it up and took it home and fed it and took care of it for days then gave it to a wild animal shelter this lady I knew at the time.
