What do you do with your baby clothes when they are outgrown? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 97/100. MommytheMaid (242)   ranked 344 out of 6,700 in had children3 years ago

Do you save up each piece of clothing your child ever wore? Do you get rid of them at a Good Will or other thirft store? Do you sell them at consignment shops, garage sales, online sales, or other selling markets? Do you give them away?

I save the special occasion clothes that I am not ready to give up yet, and some other outfits I want to save for the next baby. I then try to sell what I can for pretty cheap and the rest is given to neighbors or friends with little girls. I tried the consignment shop before, but they are not that friendly in my neck of the woods and rarely buy anything because they can't sell the junk they have bought from their friends in the past.

SO what do you do with the baby clothes once your little one has grown out of them?

I saved a few outfits that meant the most to me, like the ones that family gave me.

I saved most of my baby clothes as my girls are only about three years apart and so I didn't have to buy all new stuff. I ended up selling quite a bit of it in yard sales and giving a lot of them away after I knew that I wouldn't be having any more kids.

Many people do not shop in consignment stores for baby clothes because they want way to much for used clothing. I find better deals at yard sales and thrift stores.

My daughter already has a 3 year old daughter and I bought her summer clothes from thrift stores and yard sales. She is having a baby boy in Septemember, so I have been hitting yard sales buying up baby boy clothes for her to save her a ton of money. They outgrow the clothes before they really get to ruin them, so I buy the nicest clothes I can.

I feel the same way about consingment stores. I love buying lots of clothes off eBay as well. You can find some good deals. Congrats on the grandson!

All my daughters nice little dresses and things we give to the consignment shops. her onesies and other items that are not stained we haven't really had time to go through all of it to get rid of it but it is a box in her closet. Once we get around to it is will probably go to the consignment shop as well

I saved all of the ones I bought for my daughter and most of the used ones she got as well. As long as they were in good enough shape for any future kids I have, I kep them. I have boxes and boxes of clothes lol and I know I'll want to get some new ones for the next kid so I'm probably going to have to get rid of my least favorites. I'll probably take them to goodwill since consignment shops don't give much of anything for the clothes and then sell them for twice as much.

myLot reputation of 97/100. MommytheMaid (242)   ranked 344 out of 6,700 in had children  3 years ago

I hate going through those boxes. I mean, I love it, but I usually spend so much time with the clothes and memories to only be able to get rid of a few things, if that. LOL

I had 3 boys, so when my first born outgrew his clothes, I saved them for the next and the next. After a certain age, the boys were so hard on the clothes, that I would throw them away or donate anything that was salvageable. Then I had my girl. I saved very few of her special outfits for when she has a daughter. I am sure that she will not be thrilled with this, but you never know. The things she outgrew as an infant and toddler I sold in a garage sale and actually made a good amount of $$ as they were very nice clothes and I marked them very cheap. Now she is 7 and for the last 2 yrs and I have offered her clothes on freecycle. They go immediately and I think that the person who gets them is always pleased.

I give my older daughter's stuff away as well. There just comes an age when kids are hard on clothing.

And now that she grown up too I give the dreases tothew poor who lives in the street. But my mom take note my MOM hide also my baby dresess when I was a kid and would you believe that my two girls ever used it again like a treasure for her that will pass throught her granchildren coz I'm the only daughter she has.

Almost all of the clothing that the children outgrow in this household is donated unless it is stained up or ripped in some way. I don't usually handle this process so I am not sure what else is done with the clothing after I put into a box marked donation. My fiancee handles all of that. But I wanted to share something I heard about. Why not have a quilt made using some of your childrens clothing? Take some special outfits that the children have worn over the years to use to make a quilt. My fiancees aunt did that for her.

myLot reputation of 97/100. MommytheMaid (242)   ranked 344 out of 6,700 in had children  3 years ago

Those wuilts are beautiful and amazing! I am saving a few pieces for that. My quilting skills are minimal, but I can't wait to give her a crazy quilt with embroidery and pictures and memories of her cute little outfits. That is why I set them away.

Thanks for the reply!

We really don't have a lot of room for them, so we usually send them to a consignment shop or Goodwill. It was tough giving them up, but we had to make room for her new, older things! We did keep some of her unisex stuff though. It's just hard to keep girly stuff when you don't know what your next baby will be!

myLot reputation of 97/100. MommytheMaid (242)   ranked 344 out of 6,700 in had children  3 years ago

It is hard to plan like that. I keep the girly stuff and if we end up having a boy, I am going to try and trade or sell for boys stuff.

I've kept all of my sons baby clothes, we're definately going to have at least one more child so I want to save them in case we have another boy. I have them sorted by size in rubbermaid bins, like newborn, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, etc so when I'm tired and prego the next time it will be a bit organized;) I did take good care of his clothes so most of them look brand new. After I'm done having kids, I'll donate them to charity. I've also kept all of his cloth diapers!

myLot reputation of 97/100. MommytheMaid (242)   ranked 344 out of 6,700 in had children  3 years ago

I kept all the cloth diapers too. They are too expensive not to keep.

I save a few outfits from each stage for my next little boy, but the rest gets passed on. First to my nephew, then to my friend's son, then to a coworker's son, then to my aunt's soon-to-be stepgrandson. There are so many babies now, it isn't too difficult to find someone who needs quality baby clothing. I know how hard it was to make ends meet when my son was born, so I like to help other moms out when I can.
Blessed Be

I love doing that too. I know a few mommas that are stuggling to make ends meet and I like to give them a few outfits to help out. CLothing is expensive even if you find it at a yard sale. I like to think it gives them more money to put food on the table.

myLot reputation of 64/100. LadyDulce (617)   ranked 249 out of 6,700 in had children  3 years ago

Oh absolutely. Every dollar helps, especially when baby food is only a few cents a jar!
