When you get in the pool with your toddler do you put a pullup on them or not?  email this discussion to a friend?

I was at a pool party last weekend with my family and some friends of ours made a big deal about a mom who got in the pool with her two year old daughter but she had her in a swimsuit with out a pullup on or a little swimmer pullup. The host of the party didnt care but our friends said that was gross and they wouldnt get in the pool with her. My husband got in the pool and so did some other moms and their kids. Everyone ignored them and enjoyed the party, but it did make me wonder if everybody else had a problem with letting a toddler in a swimming pool without protection under their swimming trunks.

I wouldn't make a big issue out of it if I saw a mom doing that but I might offer her a little swimmer pullup if I had an extra. Those things are expensive, especially considering they don't get worn for long. Maybe the mom you mentioned just can't buy little swimmers AND diapers. I know this summer it's going to be hard on us to get enough little swimmers to go around with 3 boys in diapers/pull ups as it is. If they were just getting in their own wading pool I wouldn't bother with a little swimmer but if they were going to be someone else's pool, especially at a pool party, I would put one on them.
It's only "gross" depending on where the child is at with potty training. If she hasn't gotten the concept at all yet then there's a good chance she could have "contaminated" the water at any time. But some 2 years olds understand well enough to be trained at that age so the mother might not have had anything to worry about in the first place.

I agreewith this comment. It shouldn't be thiougt about too much. Or enough to ruin someones day. If there were so many complainers, maybe one of them could have offered an extra. How do any of us know when we swim in pools with anyone other than ourselves, if and adult is comanitating the pool just the same as a child would?

I wouldn't let something like that bother me!! If I had an extra pull-up I would ask the mom if she wanted it. If the kid pooped I would jump out of the pool, but otherwise I would relax and have a good time swimming with my kids!! I wouldn't put my son in someone else's pool without a pull-up on, but everyone is different!! It wouldn't bother me =)

It wouldn't really bother me personally but I think it is a little disrespectful to go into someone elses pool with a child who will most likely pee in it. But I guess its all good since the host didn't care :)

I wouldn't put my own son in the water without his little swimmers, but I wouldn't really make it a big deal if someone else did. As long as the kid didn't poop, it wouldn't bother me too much. A lot of potty trained kids pee in pools, ya know? It's gross, but that's the way it is.

Personally I put my son in a swim diaper, even if he is just playing in his own pool. Just because I don't want to clean it up if he makes a mess!

I don't think I'd be grossed out; in fact, I'd probably expect it when there's toddlers around. But I've never taken my son swimming without a Little Swimmer on, also because I just don't want to deal with the mess. But that's my preference.

I would buy a swim diaper. THey are great! If I saw someone with a regualr diaper or no diaper at all I think I would just offer them one of my swim diapers since I always bring extra.

I just put my son in a cloth diaper without any stuffing in it (he's in cloth diapers full time). I refuse to buy pull-ups, they only are there to catch the poop if the child poops while in the pool. Pee can pass through them too, I'm sure some parents have made the mistake of putting them in one when they run out of diapers lol. I hate it when I see a kid in a regular disposable diaper in the pool, they have gel in them that absorb liquids, so the diaper gets to weigh 10 pounds and sags off their butts!

I know what you mean, its so gross when a regular diaper or pullup gets wet. Then you have the stuffing everywhere, and that stuff is so nasty when its wet.

Do you know if the child was potty trained or not. All of my girls were potty trained by 18 months. My son was over two. If my child wasn't potty trained then yes I would put a pull up on them. A family last summer would put there infant with no diaper or swimsuit in the apartment pool. We told the office management which of course they made them get out.

myLot reputation of 98/100. snoopy04 (584)   ranked 61 out of 9,011 in parenting  5 years ago

Yes she was potty trained because the mom got out of the pool at one point so she could go potty. Our friends said it didnt matter whether she was potty trained or not it was gross and that the mom was being rude towards the other guests because she didnt take their feelings into consideration.

myLot reputation of 88/100. zoesden (669)  5 years ago

I wouldn't be offended or think it is rude if the child is potty trained. But that is just me I guess. I actually worry more about swimming with kids between 6 and 12 cause they don't want to get out to go to the bathroom. lol

I don't see a problem with it since the little girl was potty trained. I think the other guests were being rude. I'm sure this mom spent lots of time getting her daughter trained and now other people want to gawk just because she's little? Maybe the host should have asked them to put one on! lol I don't think I'd let my child get in the water without a swim diaper if they weren't though, be it my house or someone else's. Who wants to clean up the mess?

I do normally put a little swimmer on my little one if I take her out to the pool but I don't think I would have given it much thought if someone else had a little one there that wasn't wearing one as I would assume the child was potty trained . Children train at different ages and just because there was a child in the pool wouldn't make me assume that the child wasn't potty trained even though my little wasn't .
