| | human beings want more than a daily bread because they don't have contentment. Needs are better than wants. necessity is better that wantings. For us to be contented, we should always seek the guidance of God through the Holy Spirit and pray through Jesus Christ name. | | | | | | |

| | The Lords Prayer cannot be prayed too much. It is a model we all need to follow. It is what really is and really matters. "Daily bread" refers to the supply of right ideas that "our Father" gives us. It is up to us to put those God given ideas to work. | | | | | | |

| | There are things in life the nurture the soul. The person who exists (eats and sleeps) without enough of those soul-nurturing factors only exists. Love, having some kind of sense of spirituality, finding purpose in caring or doing for others, appreciating the beauty that is all around in the world, enjoying friendship, intellectual pursuits, the sense of satisfaction that comes from being creative in some way, the thrill of some adventures, the way beautiful music makes a person feel (and even reduces the stress response, which is, ultimately, destructive to health), the way cheerful music or laughing do something similar -- These are all the things that don't just nurture a soul, but that connect people to other people and the world. They're the things that, when all added up, make for a nicer life and an appreciation of life. In addition to those soul-nurturing things, there's the issue that people need skills, intelligence, courage, and any number of other things in order to live. Also, in its original text, the point of the "line" about not living by bread alone had to do with the fact that people also needed to live by the laws of God (you probably know that this was something said by Jesus in the New Testament). "Man does not live by bread alone" is not something I made up. Whether a person thinks of the meaning of this line in terms of Jesus' words about following the laws of God, in terms of what it takes to have a strong and healthy mind (which can affect physical health), or simple in terms of the fact that having soul-nurturing things in life make that life more whole; it almost doesn't matter. While The Lord's Prayer asks for "daily bread" it may be asking that people not go hungry, but I don't think it is necessarily saying that life isn't better with a few other important things in it as well. | | | |

| | I think we want more than the daily bread simply because we are human and have that nature within us. I don't think to many of us can be satisfied with the things God has given us unless we see how bad things can be. I appreciate the joys God has granted me with. | | | | | | |

| | it is good to appreciate God for what you have and be content with it. it is greed that makes some people to indulge in stealing, contentment is good. | | | |

| | but it is better to be satisfied with the little you have and be contented. actually man must not live by bread alone but by every word that proceed out of the mouth of God, we should also crave for the word of God, it gives satisfaction. | | | |

| | Well it could be said that we are never content with what we have, we are always wanting more and sadly we expect it. We get our self into this nature by having to have the things other people have, I believe. We cannot just be content with food & raiment as God says to be.....we want the car, the house, the money, the whatever else it could be that the Jones' have. We always try to be more like someone else rather than just to be ourself....be who God made us to be. God said in His Word ...But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. If you seek God He will give you not only your needs, He will also give us our wants if it is something He desires us to have. I know this because God has given me so many things, and some He hasn't given to me...and for good reason. He always knows best for us, what we think we need, God sees our future and that thing we think we need could cause us the most disaster we have ever saw in our life. This is a great thought provoking question, Thanks for posting it. HUGS | | | |

| | Do you understand the meaning of that line in the Lord's prayer? Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses? | | | | | | |
okwusman1 (1094)

| | you should have told us what it means, but i believe it means that God should provide us with our daily requirement including guidance from his word and also forgive our sins because no man is righteous. | | | |

| | Well I didn't say because I wanted to see what you thought it meant, lol. But I liked your answer! You would be surprised at how many people think "Give us this day our daily bread" merely means food! It means all those things that God provides us daily... not just physical sustenance. We are supposed to learn to be content with circumstances we find ourselves in... but are also to pray for these needs as well... because it is the Lord that provides all things (whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual). | | | |
