How Important Is A Masteral Degree to you? Why would you take it?

Good news!! I have just been admitted to a Master of Arts in Communication in a popular university. I know it sounds hifalluting, and academic. It's something I need to accomplish anyway, for promotion that's why. How about you guys, do you think a masteral degree can get you far ahead than the rest? Should you ever want to get it, what specific course would you prefer and where would you want to enroll?

Yes it would give us an edge. My dad would always encourage us to take a masteral degree while working. His story goes like this. He was in his late twenties when he applied for a higher position in Napocor and the other candidate for the position had been working in the corporation for almost twenty five years. But they have chosen my dad to do the managerial position in San Roque Dam because he had a Masters degree in Business Administration. That title kind of gave him an edge. I'll be working in Sacramento, California a few months from now as a nurse and I'm planning to study Surgical Nursing. It would make me more confident in handling patients in that field of nursing. :)

The story of your dad inspires me since I am also in the government. No wonder you are quite familiar with the qualification standards here in the Philippines. I'm glad you are also pursuing post-graduate studies. Like father, like daughter eh? Good luck to you, my dear. Aim high and hit the mark!!

Congratulations that's a good move. I believe that a masteral degree can get you ahead of the rest. I have friends who took it right after graduation and they are now at the height of their career. I dreamed of pursuing it once but because of monetary constraints and family life I pushed it aside. I still dream of pursuing it one day, just waiting for the right timing. Congratulations on your promotions in advance.

Wow that's way too early. Thanks! I hope you could also acquire your masteral degree someday. I was actually at the university this morning to comply my medical examination. I didn't know post-graduate students are stillr required to undergo medical exam, I thought it was only for undergrad students.

Congratulations. If you have the working experience in the field you are pursuing for your master degree then it will be an added advantage. It will hasten your promotion. There is no end to learning so go for it.

at least you should have a masteral degree in your own field before you can join the faculty or teaching force of a school or university. this is one of the implementing guidelines of most universities in choosing new batch of teachers or instructors. you have all the edge if you have higher educational background. even in private companies nowadays, they select applicants based on the highest educational attainment you have. the higher the better. if given the chance to proceed with my master's degree i would have taken Masteral in Business Administration in a private institution.

Not only it is an advantage in the private sector or in the academe, but also in the government. If you are familiar with the Civil Service Commission, it has third level eligibility qualifying examination which you'd find easy to pass if you have taken some post-graduate studies. Apart from the promotion, I would really like to enlighten myself to new perspectives in mass media and communications. Cheers!

I have to get an MA too because I want to teach in college. The truth is though, I don't think it will be a very good learning experience. I have a feeling that I just really need a degree to get a job. If I could get accepted into the academe without an MA, I wouldn't think of getting one because it's expensive and will involve a lot of work. But anyway, I would like to congratulate you and commend you for your positive outlook on this. Best of luck to us both.

Thanks JanMags. You do need to have a master's degree up on your sleeves to make you more credible as an acedemician. Getting a masters is indeed tedious, but it will be very rewarding. I just needed to be positive on this. That way, my studies would just become a breeze. And when I am done with it, promotion will be up for my grabs. So I am quite motivated, and so shoud you. Regards!

I have a Master's in Science and when I was working it opened doors to employment that were closed to others with less education. Having a Master's nowadays is essential in many occupations. Good Luck and have a nice evening.

Presently I am taking Master of Science in Information Technology minor in Information Systems. I think if you are in the govenment office or in the academe, it is very important. A masteral graduate in an academe or government office will easily get promotions. For me, I work in a private sector, a non-academic firm. I do it not for promotions, but for enhancing my knowledge to the recent education available in my alma matter. I wanted to pursue a more challenging career in the advancement of information systems. Right now, I am into managing my time with very hectic shedules and tight budget. But I know that after a year, God will grant be the diploma I've been working for.
