My small town is currently celebrating Milk Days. You see way back in the 1800's we became known as the Milk Capital of the US. Not so much anymore, but they still celebrate. The paint the streets down town white, have parades, bed races, a Queen, arts & crafts, horse shows, tractor pulls, a Carnival, and much much more. I will not be as active in Mylot these next few days, not because I am out celebrating, but I have to work a lot of hours during this festival. I work at the Police Department, so we are very busy at this time as you can imagine. Needless to say, I dread festival days, for that reason. What about you? Do you celebrate special times in your town, city or country? DO you enjoy such festivals? Or are you like me and dread their arrival, and feel a sigh of relief when they are gone?

The only thing I like about these celebrations are the foods they serve, which I love to taste. They showcase some of their town's best dishes, and they also make their own specialities in it. If ever I got curious, I ask for their recipes about that certain food. I don't like blending with the crowd, I try to keep myself comfortable by simply watching people street dancing.

I think the parade is probably my favorite. Seeing all the kids, horses, dancers, etc. My hubby enjoys the food. This year, I am working so I get to see all the "icky" stuff.

Gosh....if I follow all those carnivals, festivals and fairs....I think every day in my year agenda will be fully book....phew. I love all kinda carnivals but only one that I regularly follow which is koningendag festivals (queen festival). Every city will celebrate this day. During the festival people and a lot of children giving a change to sell/get rid off their stuff that they don't need anymore for a really ridiculous cheap prices some for nothing. My daughter loves it. It was like a huge flea market everywhere...lotsa different kinda food stall everywhere, musics, etc. Sometimes I make fun and said....we just trade our junk for another junk....hehehe.... But doesn't matter....because we had fun and everybody's happy and more children friendly because they may got involved and just be creative...

Hi monkey. Why not dropped your uniform and join as a monkey juggler or better yet a rocking monkey at the carnival. I might join you there too, LOL! I'm living in an urban city and carnivals and any event of such nature are not popular here in my area. Town celebrations are usually held in the nearby provinces. Carnivals and fairs are rampant during holidays in some area of the city. I can't blame you for dreading the arrival of the carnival. The nature of your work is not something I envy either. You have a lot of responsibility and need to deal with everyday pressures. I'll make sure to wrap some carrots for you, LOL!

I also live in a small town and we have Lincon Days since Abraham Lincon was born in a town next to mine. I think is a really nice time for communities to get together and celebrate important events.

We don't have celebrations like that which take over the whole town, but most of the local churches and other civic groups have their own fairs and festivals. They are usually situated on church grounds or special areas that are made for gatherings. I will go to them but except for when my kids are with me, I don't say I am definitely going to go to any of them. I can see how they are just more work for you. I hope this years celebrations are quiet and peaceable for you this year.

I live on an island so the only time of year that we open a carnival is for the 4th of july, but I hate it! It is hard to enjoy it when it is pretty small and there are thousands of people lining up for the kiddie rides. I too dread such festivities an can't wait till it is over with!

Gotta Regatta! - steamboats
We in Charleston, WV celebrate Regatta Days the end of every August, beginning of September. We have sternwheelers (steam paddleboats like in Mark Twain books) from all over the US come upriver to have races, open houses and parties. We have carnival rides and games as well as nightly concerts on the Kanawha River boardwalk. The locals arrive in their boats all decorated and lit up at night for prizes. Come by and visit!

LOL, I wish I was able to celebrate, but alas, I am here dealing with the calls and arrests. I am on the ugly side of the festival. Thank you for the permission to take a leave of absence though. Hopefully you will grant me the same in July-August for about 2-2 1/2 weeks as I am going to Cuba.

We have an Old Settlers event every year. Now being that last year was my first year for it I only had to run the kids games for a couple of hours and the rest of the time got to enjoy the activities. This year I am on the committee so we will see if I enjoy it as much*L* I am really looking forward to it though. I love the bed races idea that you do. I may have to suggest that. I am thinking that would be good for a few laughs!

We here in Kerala, India have our Onam festivals. It is the most popular festival of Keralites. The State government observes a ten day tourism festival at that time. It is observed during August - September. During the Onam days so many floral decorations are displayed in front of houses and other buildings of public interest. A colourful pagentery and parade is a speciality of the shows in which dozons of colorfully decorated elephants and horses are paraded along with floats displaying the variouis aspects of our culture and modern development. Many of the ethnic art forms are exhibited. Musical concirts and orchestra will be played and performed throughout the city and classical dances and ethenic martial arts are performed. In short those ten days are very joyful and happy for us. Many foriegners mainly westerners visit our place during the season. As I am not in the police or any other responsible department any more I enjoy the celebrations with my family members. Thank you, misheleen.

That sounds like a fun festival. I hope you can enjoy some of it even though you have to work it. We are looking forward to a small festival next weekend that will allow us to ride a few rides, eat cotton candy and look at some vendor booths that we might not otherwise get to do. It is a nice little festival that has been going on for years and I think they will have fireworks at it too. It should be fun with the kids going!!

i don't think we have many things. i mean there is always something going on at all the churches (there's a festival at my g-pa's church this weekend), and the schools hold events like that. and downtown there are people's fair's and oktoberfest's and always stuff for each holiday going on. then in other cities there are little events. there's a city WAY north that i had never even heard of until my friend visited there, and they shut the town down for their annual event. but where i'm from, nothing special goes on. we're a big town/city though. when i went away to college, that town had a few annual events, and they were fun, something to do in a kinda boring town! we partake in some other events in an outside city, but to do anything fun, you have to travel around the state, to different cities for different events. that's a hassle. but if i were working where you were, i wouldn't be too excited either!

no it's not too exciting from my standpoint..lol, but it is a small town, they get excited over a Smelt Fry too..lol
