There have been so many movie stars to come out of Saturday Night Live it isn't funny. Some have made a couple hits, while others seem to have one hit movie after another.
Some of the best contenders in my mind would be: Will Farrell, Eddie Murphy, Mike Meyers, and Bill Murray to name but a few.
Which former Saturday Night Live cast member do you think makes the best movies now that they have left Saturday Night Live, and why do you pick them?

Hi there Filmbuff, my favorites are Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner and Steve Martin. I am from the old school SNL, and I really miss these three. They are hilarious. Gilda was take from us to soon. And the men even tho they are aging are still just to funny. I know I am biased, but I just do not enjoy SNL the way I use to, I never never missed an episode, I still watch it but its just not got the kind of class that did when John Belushi and this gang were all there.

I enjoy the original cast too, they always made you laugh and had good things to say. Some took it to the movies, but so have a bunch of the newer guys. I enjoy the new guys as good as the originals. It won't take anything away from the originals just like movies today vs older movies. I'm just glad that they can keep bringing out good stuff.

BrotherTuck I hear what your saying.. and your right the cast today is fantastic. I tend to become attached to what I love. Its the same with my books music the movies I watch. I have watch the young and restless of for about 30 years. For me it changed SNL, I still enjoy it but my heart is not there like it was at one time.

I've been watching SNL off and on since it began. I'm kind've partial to the original cast as well, although there been some really talented cast members to come and go over the years.
Angelswhispers, which former cast member do you think makes the best movies since leaving SNL?

Well I'm sure I'll get a few people on here who think I'm nuts but I cannot stand Saturday Night Live. That being said though many talented stars did get started on there or were on their for years. Stars like Billy Crystal, Michael McKean, James Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. You will notice I did leave off John Belushi because I never cared for him, his brother is a far better actor then he ever was in my opinion.
I think out of all those I'd have to go with Dan Aykroyd as my favorite and who I think makes the best movies. They are so good though and I'm torn between those I listed because they have made some excellent films. They made some bombs of course but most I have enjoyed. Aykroyd though the movies I've seen him in I've enjoyed and I loved his show Psi Factor.

I love Ghostbusters :) It's a great movie. Even the sequal was pretty good. I liked the fact that Aykroyd made fun of the role in Casper. I always like it when actors are willing to do that. Have you ever seen the movie "Sneakers"? It's very good. It has him, Robert Redford and Sidney Portier, but Redford is the lead. It's more of a drama/comedy but very good.

No star is going to have all hit movies, bombs are to be expected from time to time. I'm sorry I left Dan Aykroyd off the list because is funny as all get out. Ghostbusters is a classic and a role in which he (and other Saturday Night Live) really shined.

I'd say Adam Sandler. Sure, he had some stinkers like "Little Nicky", but overall his movies are consistently funny. And he seems real. I mean, I don't see a difference in him than Jo Schmo, except Adam Sandler has money. "The Wedding Singer" was a personal favorite and I don't many people who didn't enjoy seeing Bob Barker 'punch' him in one of his earlier and most successful films. And I don't know many comics around who would have taken the beautiful chance with "Punch Drunk Love."

I agree with you that Adam Sandler is nothing if not consistant. Most of his movies gross about the same amount of money which equals a huge profit for everyone involved compared to the cost of making the films.
My only gripe with Sandler is that his character his essentially the same loveable loser oaf in every movie. He doesn't have much of an acting range, but what he does, he does well and it is enteriaining.

I haven't seen Reign over Me yet, he also did Punch Drunk Love which was a little different and it also didn't do as well. Perhaps he's stuck being typecast-- that the fans don't like him if he isn't playing the standard Adam Sandler character...

Yes I saw it. The Razor's edge was the first time I saw Bill Murray in a drama. He was great. Have you seen the original film with Tyrone Power? It is good too.

I haven't seen the original. I'm not sure that I want to. I'm afraid that I would either hate the original because there is no Bill Murray, or I'll end up disliking the Bill Murray version that I like so much.
I really do need to read the book that it was based on. From what I understand the Bill Murray version was very true to the original book.

Woohoo another pick for Bill Murray. I'm in total agreement with you that he makes the best films.
You know what movie of his that I really like? It's a remake of the movie called The Razor's egle that he did in early 90's I think. It's a drama that he produced in the early 80's and it just an awesome movie.

Of the older group, it's between Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd. Of the more recent ones it would be Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy. I agree that Adam's movies are similar but you know as soon as you see he's heading one up that he'll have all of his pals in there somewhere. :)

My favorites are Will Farrell and Adam Sandler. Although Chris Farley's few movies were hilarious. I really like Will Farrell though. Pretty much all of his stuff is ridiculously funny.

Will Farrell and Adam Sandler are both great. Will Farrell I think should be higher on my list then he is. He has subtle nuances to his acting and comedy that are just great. Blades of Fury, and Anchorman stand out as being some of his best work. I have to admit that I haven't seen Taladega Nights yet.
Adam Sandler has also made some really funny movies. The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Happy Gilmore I think are the best.
The biggest problem that I have with Sandler is that his movies and the character he plays in them all seem to be the same guy, more or less. He's also let fly a few stinkers like Little Nicki, the Animated Christmas Film and yes even waterboy that took him out of the running for being my personal favorite.

For me, the best movies from SNL cast members have been from Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell. I mean, Eddie was an 80's staple, and that was when I really got into movies in general. I wanted to make movies since I was 4, so I guess that childhood was shaped by movies like Beverly Hills Cop, Trading Place, Coming To America, and 48 Hours...
But Will Ferrell, the guy is classic and shows incredible comedic genius. I mean, even in bit parts (Superstar, Zoolander) he is awesome. But his movies constantly entertain, and many are classics (Old School, Anchorman). I mean, the quotes from those two alone are worth the price of admission.

Oh my goodness. I can only pick one? As many have already stated, I am partial to the original Saturday Night Live cast. Lets see, if asked to pick one, I suppose I would have to say Bill Murray. But I also really, really like others from both the orignal cast and the newer cast. I like Will Farrell, Steve Martin, and Dan Aykroid too!

I know, it's really hard to pick one because so much great talent has come out of SNL.
I vote Bill Murray also: Caddy shack, ghostbusters, groundhog day, Kingpin, Rushmore, Lost in Translation, Tootsie, Stripes, Meatballs, What about Bob, The Razor's edge...and others. The list of great movies could go on and on.

I'm going with Bill Murray as well. He just has a care-free aura (sp?). Every movie he is in he plays the role with a great passion. His early comedies are some of the funniest in movie history while his recent work engages viewers.

That is a very hard choice. My top 3 would be Mike myers, adam sander and rob shynder. All 3 of them have made a bunch of really funny movies. Pretty much all of their movies have been big successes. I like will farrell, and he was really funny on saturday night live, but most of his movies aren't as good. they are still ok and funny, but not as good as what they seem to be in the previews.

I think the Will Farrell movies are some of the best ones out there and better than his work on Saturday Night Live. To each his own I guess.
Sandler and Meyers and have a string of hits. Rob Schiender movies for the most part have left me cold. I liked the first American Gigalo but that was about it. All his other roles he owes to Sandler who cast's him in almost every film he makes. It's good to have friends...

There are so many stars from SNL that have been successful making movies after being on the show. However, I don't think there is one star who has had amazing movies consistently after leaving SNL. All of them had atleast one flop, which probably is normal. I think the ones that had the best movie careers after are Eddie Murphy, Dan Akroyd, Will Ferrel, Bill Murray and Adam Sandler.

Flops and bombs are definetly normal. I don't think there is any actor who has made all successful movies.
I totally spaced on Adam Sandler, I meant to add him to the list of top contenders in the original post. His movies are funny and honestly kind've similar. But if it's not broken, don't fix it. His romantic comedies in general gross about 100 million a pop consistently.

With all the ones from the first cast, Belushi, Akroyd, Chevy Chase, and then Murphy and Meyers, Will Ferril, Piscapo, Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider there have been a lot who started in SNL and then went with it into the movies.
I think the one who stands out in my mind as the one who has shown the most since days in SNL is Bill Murray. With some of the more dramatic movies he has done lately, and the comedies that he has done, he always puts on a good show.

I'm in agreement with you, I think Bill Murray has been the most consistent, and for the most part seems to make the best movies and choose the best scripts. He's also very versatile from doing really good comedies to drama's as well. Thanks for posting.

Will Farrell, hands down. I think he makes good movies consistently. He may always play the "funny" guy, but in some ways the characters are always different. There are layers to each character and he gives them a life of their own. Chris Farley was also very good, but got stuck playing the "destructive, shy fat guy" and there was much more to him than that. They pegged him early on and didn't give him much ability to try new things.

Will Farrell is often so funny because of how seriouslly he plays the funny guy. Or how funny the "straight" guy of his is. He can definetly take it over the top and he is a top contender for sure.
I was never that into Chris Farley, he was moderatly funny on SNL but I didn't like the majoriy of his solo movies. The ninja one was funny, the rest were a little lacking in my opinion.

I'd also go with Bill Murray.
A more interesting question to me is who has made the worst movies. Rob Schneider, possibly, though I admit to finding him quite funny at times. I'd say Dana Carvey has made the worst movies of any SNL cast member. Apart from the Wayne's World movies, which were really Mike Myers' movies, all his movies have been disasters. "Master of Diguise, anyone? Strange, as he seems quite talented.

A very interesting question there. Carvey's movies have been pretty bad except for one where he played a con man that I rather enjoyed. Schneider I think is out of the running because he's been in almost all of Sandler's movies which have been good. He's also turned in some really good performances in those movies as well.

I'd say the Saturday Night Live cast members that shifted well into the current movie industry are Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Mike Meyers, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, and David Spade. Those who did the same in the past would be Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Jon Lovitz, Jim Belushi, Chris Farley, and Kevin Nealon. There were also SNL members who only spent a season or two in SNL but are not successful in movies like Robert Downey Jr. and Joan Cusack. I would also like to pick Chris Rock, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Tracy Morgan and Jay Mohr...although they are more on TV projects than movies.
