I always thought the reason we don't have one is because our government don't want to pay for another holiday. It wouldn't surprise me if they don't agree to have a Britain day and have it on a Saturday or Sunday. That would be annoying!
Sometimes I wonder why we don't feel proud of ourselves as a nation. Maybe some of the bad people have taken away the meaning of National pride, but we should not let them. We should celebrate the things that bring us together, including especially our diversity.

Its annoying when you get people being so negative about the UK. I sort of stole this discussion from a discussion on the BBC website and there seemed to be loads of people saying how terrible a country we live in so why would we want to celebrate it. Personally i am very proud to be british and English so we should be allowed to celebrate both | |

Some say it has no meaning anymore, because we are either English, Scottish or Welsh or Northern Irish as well, but I don't think they are seeing the bigger picture.
Yes we have more autonomy within Britain, but at the same time there are lots of Scots living in England, Welsh living in England, English living in Wales, and all the diverse cultures that have came here to live, so actually it does mean something still. We should stick together, but also recognise our individual natures as well. Why can't we have the best of both worlds? | |

I suppose the closest we have to it at the moment is the saints days for each of the 4 countries. However the only one that's a really big thing is St Patricks Day isn't it? Generally though I think it's a good idea - too much negativity around so it's time we did something positive for a change.

It's quite a big thing here and yet St Andrews day is barely acknowledged - most people I suspect won't even know when it is. I lived in Surrey for years and I remember quite a bit going on for St Georges Day but I don't know if it's still the same nowadays. | |
