Would you like coffee?

My mother-in-law took my son and I out to lunch last week, when we were finishing up, the waitress came by and asked if I would like some coffee (not being a coffee drinker, I said no). My son (9 years old) ask, "why do they ask if you want coffee"? I tried explaining that some people like to have coffee after they have dinner, he asked why. (I started thinking, what, are you 3 again? why, why, why, remember those days?) I told him I really don't know since I don't drink coffee myself. Any way, my question to you is, do you like to have coffee after a meal? If so, why? (so I can tell my son).

I am not a coffee drinker. Why? When I was young, my mother prohibits us to drink coffee after any meals. Why? She says that one will get diabetes. Why? One gets diabetes because there is too much sugar, especially cold coffee. Why? I do not have the answer.
So it stops here. I do not have coffee after a meal. It's a habit I have because of the above whys. It's precisely I did not get the answer for the last why that I cannot go further. It is good to ask why. That's also why my username is whyaskq. lol.

I am a coffe lover and drink it anytime but I have heard that many people get sleepy after a large meal, e.g. dinner and drinkng a cup of coffe combats the sleepy feeling due to it's caffeine cotents..

Possibly it originated a social thing. Coffee was, and still is highly prized. For the rich, to serve coffee after a meal was considered the height of social class.
Gradually as coffeee became more affordable, it's use as a social "enhancer" bcame more widespread.
As drinking a cup of coffee can take some time, it is considered better to serve it after a meal.

Ok, in answer to your question nope I don't want coffee after a meal but then I am like you - not a coffee drinker...
Have to share this story though - oldest son was 3 and all day long why why why. I always tried to give good answers to his question but was putting on make-up to go bowling with my husband and got the 'why are you doing that Mommy?' I said, 'Just because.' That 3 year old put his hands on his hipps and said, 'That's not a berry good weason Mommy' (that's very good reason for those who don't understand 3 year old talk).

Hey, there is nothing wrong with asking questions lol. A 9 year old can be inquisitive as well and it is a good sign.
I normally take coffee after a meal at the restaurant if it is part of the set. Otherwise, I would consider if we still want to continue chatting there. If yes, I will get a drink and quite often it is coffee - not because it is coffee but because it is just a drink I like.
But it is quite often that even if we decided not to take coffee at that restaurant, we will still go to Starbucks or Macs for coffee lol.
So yes, I normally have coffee after a meal outside - unless I had loads of drinks during my meal. ^^

I like finishing a meal with a nice cup of coffee because, if it's in a social setting, it allows for further conversations and interractions with the people I'm spending time with. If there's no coffee following the meal, then it feels like we have to leave right away and can't relax and enjoy ourselves.

i don't always take in coffee after each meal. but i do sometimes especially when i am with my friends. maybe, just to have reasons to stay longer on the table so we can spend more time together chatting to each other. aside from that, i don't really drink coffee after meal especially if i am just alone... anne

Well, it's very rare that I drink coffee anyway, and so it's even more rare for me to have a coffee after a meal.
My partner drinks a LOT of coffee every day, but after a meal, he prefers an Espresso. Sometimes he'll go for a straight black coffee, but more often than not it's an Espresso.

I also don't like drinking coffee. I feel dizzy every time I tried drinking even just a sip of it.

I like coffee, but always avoid it n have stopped havng it since one year, cause I know one can get addicted to it. So I would not have it unless there is no option available.ICause I know of friends who r addicted to it, n cannot work at certain time of the day, without having it.

Since you brought the subject of coffee up, and I am a daily user of the substance, do you allow you child to drink coffee? From time to time, not daily, I allow my 9 year old to drink coffee, and why not? I have heard some time ago, that coffee is really a healthy substance to consume. My son turns it into a special drink. He put a lot of cream or milk in it, some sugar or chocolate, and you would not even know it is coffee, but he thinks it is. I drink coffee black, with cream or milk, with chocolate, with dulce de leche, with ice cream, with all sorts of items to make it a special drink. Coffee is my daily companion, my special drink. I don't drink it for the stimulation, I drink it because it is soothing, refreshing, and sets me up for the rest of the day. Yeah for the coffee bean.

If yes, I will get a drink and quite often it is coffee - not because it is coffee but because it is just a drink I like. I like a cup of coffee as my dessert. I like the taste in general and I much prefer it over some sweet dessert which just makes me thirsty a moment later. I guess it's also a habit, I don't always drink coffee after a meal.
