I love watching the Dicosvery Channel, Animal Planet, Jack Hannah, Mutual of Omaha and all the channels that features animals.
I was just watching a Mutual of Omaha special about Octopus. They are amazing creators. They think out solutions to solve their problems. I saw one, held in captive, unscrew the lid on it's tank and escape from a boat in the middle of the night.
We all love dogs. They are used as eyes for the blind and can even detect cancer in some patients.
Just look at what the dolphins, whales and other sea animals do at Sea World. They seem to love human companionship.
I've even seen Gorillas that have learned sign language. And we know how human like chimps are.
I just saw a special about orphaned baby orangutans. They are the closest thing to to a human baby I've ever seen. They cry like a baby and they smile when they are happy.
I even seen adult orangutans copying human behavior. They were washing their human friends clothes in the stream.
God has created some amazing creators.
What animals impress you the most and why?
Don't forget about cats that wake their owners up in the middle of the night when something just isn't right.
And don't forget about our insect friends. They are now training bees to detect bombs at our ports.
What are your thoughts.
Your friend.

Hey Lloyd,
I'm not surprised that you have an interest in animals. After all, you do have a sight of nature at your front door. (smile) I like tropical fish because they are pretty to look at and from a medical standpoint, they help to keep your blood pressure at a normal level when you watch them. I have a 30 gallon fish tank in my home.

Hello Jerryn. You are right about the sight of nature at my front door.
For those of you who don't know what Jerryn is talking about, I like to feed the birds and other animals that visit my front yard.
I see finches, robins, cardinals, crows, doves, blackbirds, squirrels, rabbits, cats and other animals everyday.
When I was younger I had many fish tanks. They are relaxing to look at.
The biggest tank I ever had was a 20 gallon tank. A 30 gallon tank must be wonderful.
What kind of fish do you have? I used to have guppies, zebras, angle fish, mini catfish and algae eaters.
I also had a tank for my goldfish.
I heard that fish can lower your blood pressure. We had a channel here years ago that showed fish in a fish tank all day long. No sound or anything.
I don't know what happened to it. I wish they would put it back on.

I love fish! We have a creek right by our trailer and I sometimes go outside just to watch the fish swimming. When we lived in our old house we tore down we had a 25 gallon tank I believe it was and we went and bought some gold fish and an algae eater. The fish started dying one by one so we gave them to my husband's cousin who knew how to take better care of them. I would like to get more one day but I'm afraid they will dye on me again. I don't know what the problem was. We did what the pet store said to do to take care of them. We fed them and kept the tank clean. I loved looking at them. Now when we go visit his cousin I get to see them. I just like going to the pet store to look at them. They are so beautiful. :)

African Grey Parrots just amaze me. They have the mind of a 5 or 6 yr old human. I've seen Alex many times on TV, he was trained by Dr. Irene Pepperberg. Alex can count, tell colors, sizes, shapes, name a wide variety of objects and express exactly what he wants in human words. The tests I've seen him do are not just mimickry but he has to actually reason the problem out.
Koko the Gorilla also can "talk" in human terms though in American sign language. They can love, hug, laugh, cry and be sad just like we can.
People have never given animals enough credit for their intelligence. People used to think I was crazy when I said my cat could talk, but she could and I could understand her just fine. She had very distinct meows and body language for things she wanted. You just have to be willing to listen to them and pay attention.
Now they have dogs who can detect skin cancers and I expect, I hope, every hospital will have one soon. People can make mistakes reading biopsies but dogs noses don't. It would save a lot of labratory time and save a lot of patients from having to be cut on unnecessarily.
We haven't even begun to explore the potential of animal intelligence.

Hello my friend. Long time, no see. You have bought up so many great animal subjects. I know people who have parrots and they seem like a part of their family. There is no doubt that they are extremely intelligent.
I've seen the story about Koko the Gorilla. Not only does she talk in sign language, she has been able to express thoughts that require multi-tasking. She not only says that she don't want to do or eat something, she say why she don't want to do it. "Koko tired."
I agree with you. There should be a skin cancer detecting dog in every hospital and doctors office. Dogs just want to be loved and please us.
I really hope we move in the direction of exploring the potential of all our animal friends.
Thanks for your well thoughout reply.

My dogs are very smart. I have 5 dogs and 5 cats. My one female dog that is closer to our trailer woke us up one night because there was a storm and the lightning struck our electric pole and it caught on fire. She is a very protective dog, especially with me. My husband trained all of our dogs to be like that but she was closer so she woke us up by constantly barking and growling. Thank God for her or the whole place would have burned down with us in it.
I too like to watch those animal shows on those channels. We used to watch them every weekend when there was nothing else on but now that I don't have a t.v in here right now I don't watch them much anymore since I am busy working online. I just cannot believe how smart these animals are.
That is pretty amazing about the bees being trained to do that. Whoever is training them must be pretty smart also. I would think it would be very hard to train a bee to do anything. Pretty amazing creatures we have. I think some of them are smarter than us, lol. :)

Wow you are truly an animal lover. My hope is to get 2 Golden Retrievers. I love those dogs.
How do you 5 dogs and 5 cats get along? Are they ok with each other?
I'm glad the one female dog was there in your time of need.
Here is the story about the bees. Tell me what you think.

US Trains Bees to Detect Bombs
UPI | November 29, 2006
LOS ALAMOS, N.M. - U.S. government scientists report developing a method for training honeybees to detect the types of explosives commonly used in bombs.
The researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory say the new techniques, based on honeybee biology, might become a leading tool in the fight against the use of improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. Such devices currently present a critical vulnerability for American military troops abroad and are an emerging danger for civilians worldwide.
By studying bee behavior and improving existing technologies, the scientists make use of the honeybee's exceptional olfactory sense. They use the bees' natural reaction to nectar -- a proboscis extension reflex -- that could be used to record an unmistakable response to a scent.
Using Pavlovian techniques they trained bees to give a positive detection response, via the proboscis extension reflex, when they are exposed to vapors from TNT, C4, TATP explosives and propellants.
The research is supported by a development grant from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency

Thanks for the compliment. You are truly a dog and cat lover.
The reason that the puppies get adopted so fast and the kittens don't if probably because puppies are just so adorable.
I know kittens are cute and cudly, but puppies have that look on their face that says "please take me home".

I saw something simple and amazing recently that was also quite amusing. I had taken my male cat to be de-sexed. He was groggy when I collected him and was almost back to his usual self by the time we arrived home 40 minutes later. He wasn't bandaged, the vet explained that the animal licks itself and heals very quickly. I let him out of his carrier inside and he immediately went outside and lay on the cement footpath sprawled in the warmth of the sun. A willy wagtail (http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/nature_conservation/wildlife/native_animals/nocturnal_animals/birds/willy_wagtail/)came and landed not 2 feet away from where Banjo was lying as if he knew he could happily taunt Banjo with impunity. Banjo pretended not to notice him.
To me it seemed both cat and bird knew that nothing would happen between them, the bird knew he was safe, and Banjo knew not to pounce. It was funny. What a clever bird....and cat too!

That is a amusing story. I guess they have a inner sense that lets them know when no real threat is present because under normal circumstances the cat would have pounced if only out of curiousity.
I hope Banjo is feeling better now. And I hope that the willy wagtail don't press its luck again. lol
Take care and thanks for that story.

I really don't know about this whole thing. After reading this discussion, I feel dolphins are really intelligent. I will definitely make a search on the internet. It's really very interesting to learn about different creatures.

Thanks for mentioning dolphins. They are truly wonderful and amazing. The United States Military are using them to detect mines and other weapons placed in the ocean.
And they help fishermen in South America round up schools of fish.
They are very intelligent and playful.
I can't stand the thought of them getting caught up in fishing nets.
And they are super acrobactic.

Hello Melissa. Horses are wonderful animals and they are loved all over the world.
I always wondered if they realized that they won a horse race.
Horses were a very intrical part of the developement of the United States.
Next to the dog, they are probably man's second best friend.
You never mentioned why you thought that horses were the smartes animals.
Please let us know.

I love Leopards.
Leopards are infamous for their ability to go undetected.
They sometimes live practically among humans and are usually still tough to spot.
They are graceful and stealthy. Among the big cats they are probably the most accomplished stalkers.

I also have seen some shows about the octopus. They are fascinating and a lot smarter than most humans give them credit for.
Like the one that showed how it was able to solve a puzzle (unscrewing a lid to escape).
Octopus also make and use tools, build shelters, and they are one of the few creatures that actually creates ART. They both draw in the sand AND build sculptures out of rocks, pebbles, and other materials.
Their art serves NO functional purpose; it is purely for enjoyment.
People really underestimate them; because, they look so strange and have no "voice" since they spend their lives underwater; so most people just ASSUME they are not intelligent.

The show I saw was several years ago and it showed them making spiral designs and "mazes" on the ocean floor.
After that I vowed, I would never eat octopus again! Not that I had ever eaten much to begin with. But, the thought of eating a creature that has enough intelligence to create a thing of beauty just for the sake of creating it is really upsetting to me.

After watching that show I have a greater respect for the octopus. Just imagine being able to change your color to blend into the backround you are in.
And then being able to squirt a ink that disorientates your predator, allowing you to escape.
That is just amazin.
Their world is a world we will never fully understand.

Yes the animals you mentioned are pretty smart and just think God has created alot of them.I always talk to the animals in the pet stores.LOL.People probably think I am nuts but that is okay. They listen and I know they know what I say.I have 4 hamsters .And they know my voice and they always seem to know when I am going to get them food because they hear the bag.LOL.My one hamster who is pretty tame he comes out to see me when I open the cage door an when I rub his head he will purr. They are pretty smart too.The ferrets are funny at the Pet store to.i was at Petco the other day with my husband and their was three ferrets in the big aquarium like cage and they were trying to get us to buy them by doing funny stuff. One got up in the hammock and when I looked back he/She had its head and half its body kind of hanging out like saying please take me home.LOL.It was cute.My mom had a chuiuaiu part dashaund(sorry I hope I spelled that right)dog I think that dog could talk.LOL.He has since passed on about 2 years ago.We still miss that dog.He was one of a kind.

Even though I don't have any pets at this time, I love going into pet stores. I have a 2 stores within a mile of me and there is a tiny zoo that I past on my way to work everyday.
I was stunned when I looked over at the zoo and saw a few giraffes. I bought my camera with me the next day and took some pics.
It's not nuts to talk to animals. I think they like it when you try to communicate with them.
I know the "please take me home look" that animals use. It's like they sense that there is a better life with a family on the outside.

I say this because I have 3 horses and a pony. I have always had horses. The first animal i remember was a horse. They are so human like. They are very loving creatures. It amazes me that a 1500.00 lb animal can be so gentle. When it would be just as easy for them to hurt you. I believe they also can tell a good person from a bad. I also think sometimes it takes an understanding person to understand some of them.

Wow. Aren't you lucky. I've only been on horse one time in my life. It was at a summer camp that I went to.
I pass horses everyday on my way to work. They are amazing creatures.
I think that many animals can tell a good person from a bad one.
