Boarding.... |
| |
| When you go on vacation do you board your pets or do you take them with you? If you board your pets, how did you find a good place? The last time we went on vacation we boarded our puppy at our vet's office, because we trust our vet. When we got him back he was limping and just not himself at all for several weeks. The vet looked at him for free and said he was fine. In a week or so his limping stopped, so it wasn't anything that serious. Now we're thinking of going on vacation again and I kind of want to take him with us. What's it like traveling with pets? | | | | | |

| | I have 3 ferrets and always find a "baby sitter" for them. My son who also has ferrets is usually the one to do it. There is no way I could ever travel with them. They need too much care. I would think long and hard before taking a puppy on vacation with you. If you don't want to board him maybe you could find someone willing to take care of him. Good luck no matter what you end up doing. | | | | | | |

| | There ferrets! That is a lot of work. My roommate in college had a ferret and he was into, under and over everything! It's like having a toddler! I don't know of anyone who would want to take care of a dog while I was gone, so I'll keep searching and looking. Thanks for your response. | | | |

| | Traveling can be very stressful for your dog and if you are planning on staying at a hotel.....you have to check and make sure that they allow dogs. Some Vets offer boarding and if they don't they can usually recomend a good place for you. I always go check the place out before I would board my dog.Just show up and don't let them know you are comming....this way you can get a first hand look at how they keep the animals. The other option you have is leaving your dog with friends or even leaving him at home and just have someone come stay at your house....this way your dog is not alone and you have someone watching over your house while you are gone. well I hope this helps a little. | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for your response winky! I love that picture. Last time we did board him at the vet and it didn't turn out that well. Since we assumed the vet would be the best place we are afraid to think of what would happen at another boarding location. A lot of hotels seem to allow pets (especially small ones), so I'm not worried about that. He loves to ride in the car, so that will be alright, but we'll be in the car longer than he's use to - we'll have to stop more often and let him out to play. | | | |

| | If he likes to go....I don't see why you should not take him with you.I would recomend getting a pet taxi(if you don't have one)......It is much safer for him to ride in one of those than say for instance in the back seat. I hear you about the vet....I used to have a boxer that had really bad seperation anxiety and when I boarded her with the vet(this is the one I would normaly take her to).....they ended up giving her drugs to calm her and for the 4 days she was there....they made her stay in this little crate.I was a bit ticked of when they told me and the first thing I did was look for another vet.The new vet was much nicer and they actually had little runs for the dogs...plus she got her daily walk and lots of attention from the staff. So if you take him along....make sure he's safe by keeping him on the leash at all times and make sure he has a name tag with your number on it.....just in case he should get away from you. | | | |

| | I always take my cats. They will miss us and get lonely, not that we won't either. On occassion, we have left them home with a trusted person to come in and play with them, change the litter daily, and feed them. I think that is a better choice, than bording them. The feel rejected there. And, they don't get the exercise, causing the limps and get flees and other things. | | | | | | |
