BIg Sams signs Joey Barton - inspired deal or potential disaster?  email this discussion to a friend?

Harrykeogh (2)   ranked 8 out of 22 in newcastle united 5 years ago

So, finally Big Sam gets his man in Joey Barton....but remember, this guy has a horrendous track record - stubbing out a cigar in a fellow players eye, assaulting a schoolboy fan, and assaulting a fellow player on the training ground! As well as having a murderous relative!!

His commitment to his team cannot be faulted but Newcastle have spent ages getting rid of the bad apples - Bowyer and Bellamy to name a couple and Sams first signing makes them look like angels!

Even during the transfer deal itself, Barton has been disruptive, claiming Man City owed him £300k. What's even more annoying is that we had offered £5.5m which was accepted, the deal stalled because of Bartons claims, and we then we raise our bid to £5.8m today and everything is hunky dory again...so, basically, we've also paid the £300k that Man City wouldn't!

Big Sam has had accusations of questionable transfer dealings levelled at him recently - surely this latest incident won't inspire confidence in his business acumen??

Well, i mean the fact is that Barton is quality player and English - two factors that dont neccesarily collide on a regular basis. And Newcastle have bought him for a bargain. I can see this being the buy of the summer. He will control your midfield area. I think with a quality striker to partner Martins, Newcaslte could have a real go next season. Of courese, you also need defenders desperately. I think Shay Given is the most under-rated player in the prem, incidentally.

I think we need a whole new defence, our attacking options are sorted. Perhaps a young holding midfielder as butt is getting on, but I would like a new back four that will provide cover for shay given. On his day he is the best keeper in the prem.

Big Sam is on a loser in Geordie land anyway.
Newcastle will still do nothing regardless of who he signs.
Barton is a fair player, but its not fair players big Sam needs.
If big sam lasts longer than a season there,I will eat my pie and chips,
I like Newcastle though,The shopping centres are good, and I have met gazza a few times, and Jimmy 5 bellies

I can assure you that Big Sam will make Newcastle one of the top teams in the prem. He's a class mananger and a good guy too, i've met him a few times. He'll give Newcastle the team spirit they've been lacking since Keegan left.

They wont win anything, they wont qualify for the champions league, they might qualify for the inter toto cup,

magpiefor47years (16)   ranked 6 out of 22 in newcastle united  5 years ago

Sorry jimbo but there's much more to visiting the toon than shopping centres. Did you go to St James Park and experience the best atmosphere in football? Did you hear the singing? Did you go to Strawberry Hill for a pint and some great crack? Did you climb up the hill to see the Angel of the North?

Geordie land is heaven for football supporters.

I predict that Toon Army will be so happy with Sam Allerdyce that Big Sam will stay for years. I reckon we are in for a sustained period of development for our team.

I don't expect immediate success overnight but I am hoping for trophies within the next 3-to-5 years. It is a time for feeling positive after 38 years without a major prize.

However, I am worried about Joey Barton's short fuse. One thing we do not need is for the young man to lose his temper and succumb to violence, either on or off the field.

I understand the concern of Barton's short fuse, but remember players like Keane, Cantona, Rooney, had short fuses. He brings passions, and WOW, do you guys need that. I'm Manchester United fan, but i do like watching the Toon Army play. When you get it right, i can see you challenging for Champs League spots.

Of all the english teams,Newcastle are my favorites by miles, lets face it,the geordies are the best english folks by a mile.
Also Gazza is a guy that was very close to my heart,I support Rangers.
I would like nothing better than to see newcastle get the better of the chelsea,s and arsenals of this world, and man utd to.
The question is,will big sam be given the time,I am not so sure.He is a great manager,of that there is no doubt.
I have been to St James park a few times, and I agree the atmosphere is fantastic, but not as good as Ibrox at a celtic game.Mind you,not much comes close to that, apart from the same fixture at Parkhead.
I think both Rangers, and I hate to say it,but Celtic to,will do quite well in next seasons champions league, and with a bit of luck,in a couple of years,Newcastle could be there to.

magpiefor47years (16)   ranked 6 out of 22 in newcastle united  5 years ago

Hi there Jimbo,
I'm living in Edinburgh these days (since February). I like the old firm too. I lean a tad more towards Celtic if anything.
What do you think about the Scottish Premier League? The way things are set up these days, what with the big money around, it seems impossible for any other teams to break the dominance of the two big Glasgow giants.
Don't you get sick of the annual two-horse-race?I'm interested in knowing whether a Rangers supporter would like to see a more even competition. It must be hard for Celtic or Rangers to improve the quality of their football.

£5.8 million for a player like this is an absolute snip. You look at other signings eg Ballack for chelsea, wright phillips etc and the size of this deal becomes apparent.

Joey admits himself he's had problems but the most important thing for me is that he wants to play for us. Gone are the times of players coming for the money, what I'm sure we'll see is slightly smaller names coming in on smaller wages but giving their all. In short Big Sam will build a team, something that we havn't been since King Kev.

The future excites me and lets face it., it's about time after what I and the rest of the geordie nation have had to put up with our failed title pusehes under King Kev

It's a terrible move. Have we not had enough of thuggish, racist players who cannot behave themselves? It was bad enough buying Bowyer and Woodgate when they were in bother.

We've even had players fighting their TEAM MATES on the pitch!

Newcastle players are notorious for being out in town getting pissed - the day after Roeder was sacked there was a group out in town openly celebrating that.

Joey Barton will prove to be another thorn in the side for us.

And as for Michael Owen - he doesn't deserve to wear the shirt; usually Newcastle players who are long term injured get out into the community visiting kids in hosptital, etc but Owen has done nothing but go back to the North West to look after his stables business. So selfish and we've been paying him thousands to do that!

stantos (11)   ranked 2 out of 22 in newcastle united  5 years ago

You watch Barton will be great for us. As I said he's admitted he's had problems, the only difference between him asnd us is that his everymove is posted all over the media. Have we all had a fight or a disagreement. Do we know what really happened or just what the media has told us.

As for Owen he's stated previously he wants to see out his contract. Why would any player want to leave us at the mo. Parker and Sib wanted to stay. If Owen leaves it'll be his loss and lets face it it's not like we wont have the money to replace him. This is being blown outta proportion imo.

I agree with what Stantos is saying. I really think Barton will be a fantastic signing for Newcastle. He's exactly what you need. He's more dynamic version of Scott Parker. He also rarely gets injured. Big Sam knows what he's doing and i'm delighed for the Newcastle fans, because i think it's about time some glory headed your way. You do need to get some defenders in though.

I think he will be a good signing because Sam Allardyce won't take any messing around. He's at a bigger club now he has the chance to play in Europe and I think he could turn his carrer and reputation around at Newcastle.

Are you talking bad apples with Sam. Half the team in Bolton were bad apples like El Hadji Diouf, but under Big Sam, they all managed to gel in as a team. I think that the move is great both for the player and club. In big Sam, Joey would find a taskmaster who would demand a lot and would not accept any rubbish. In Joey, Sam has a talented midfielder around whom he can build the team.

I am pretty sure this would turn out to be another inspired signings from Big Sam.

Cheers!
Ram
