I enjoy the odd hour or two of recreational metal detecting, so i went out this afternooon and had my first substantial find. I found a coin well over 300 years old! Just to think that this had been in the ground for such a length of time. Well, i think it will be going on E.Bay very soon. Anyone else felt the thril of this first find, what did you do with it?

I used to have a metal detector and enjoyed going around with it. The most I ever found though was threepennny bits and old pennies. That were quite interesting because with one in particular I could almost "see" the man who dropped it, who seemed to be sat on the grass in a local beauty spot eating sandwiches on a bank holiday time. The threepence slipped out of his pocket. To add interest, I used to dowse first of all on a local map to see where to go where we may find something of interest. Once, we found at the bottom of a quarry a smashed car - exactly the same model as I had, but it had a beautifully preserved drivers seat in it - mine was ripped, so I took it out and fitted it in my car. My dowsing lead me there, not my metal detector LOL.

Oh yes, do try dowsing. I think it may open up a whole new world to you. What I found is that it's best to visualise yourself with your metal detector for a few moments, then let it go. Focus on the breaths entering and leaving the body whilst you dowse. Then, try not to let the intellect interfere and just head for the place on the map. Ordinance survey maps are good for this. Good luck my friend :-)

Wow !!!! Good finding eskarena1 !!! How deep it was when you found it ??? Maybe I should start thinking about metal detector since my belated mother in law had lost her precious wedding ring. Who knows....maybe somewhere in our garden because when she was alive she did gardening a lot. It will be nice for my father in law if we'll be able to find it for him. Once again, good jobb eskarena1 !!!

Oh beautiful coin!!!!! I love walking with my metal detector but I have not had any big finds, Congradulations!!!!!! I will look for it on e-bay, I only purchase silver coins before 1964, but this is a rare fine, you should take it to a dealer to find the value.

That must have been exciting! Is it genuine? Did you have it appraised? Not that I doubt you but I am just curious how one knows if something that old is genuine.

well, as far as i know it is genuine, it either is or its a very good fake the smoothness of the wear as you see on the picture can only usually be found on very old items

Wow! What a great find. I head my town park a few mornings a week and usually see the same guy there with his metal detector scouring every inch of it. I asked him if he ever found anything valuable and only thing he came up with other than the odd penny or 2 was a watch that was bout 6" in the ground. He had it cleaned and it still worked. Was a wind-up type of watch. Anyways, where he took it to get cleaned, they offered him almost a grand for it. Talk about shock. lol I would like to get a decent metal detecter one of these days and go over my property with it and see what it finds. Good luck on future finds.

This is the wilderness at the bottom of my garden - This is the area where i found my coin. It is part of wilderness in the open countryside at the bottom of my garden. It is a peaceful, spiritual place and has links with paganism and early primative methodism
blessed be
well, it was down by the river at the bottom of my garden, in a very nice spot that i have only just cleared but has very early associations with the primative methodist movement in the North of England. I have tried to shown the beauty of the place in my picture

I love to go metal detecting, but we never have had a really good metal detector. Your find is exciting, finding a coin that old is awesome. We only found a few pennies when we did it. Your find is making me want to get out and start looking.
