Odd thing happening with my ice.

In the summer I like to drink a lot of ice water to help keep me cool. Something really strange happens with the ice though. When the ice starts to melt and dissolves back into the water, not all of it actually dissolves. There are these weird looking small flaky white crystalline objects that are left in the water and settle on the bottom on the glass. They don't dissolve back into the water even if I stir it up. I do use a water filter to get most of the bad stuff out of the water so I have no idea what this stuff could be. Has this ever happened to anyone else before, and if so, do you know what it is? Whatever this substance is, it's got to be something that's chemical structure changes after being frozen and doesn't change back after thawing. I hope that this stuff isn't going to hurt me or anything.

I have never heard of something like this with using a Water filter as well. This is weird. I would think it would leave your drink tasting a little different as well? Sounds like something worth investigating though.

Well as I responded to someone else, I think it's a problem with the icetrays and not the water filter. Sometimes I will fill up a water bottle and put it in the freezer. The same thing does not happen with the water bottle when it thaws out.

i can be one of 2 things, i have this happen too by the way... and it wont hurt you :)
1 it could just be a bit of dust, either from your ice cube trays or your water filter.
or it could be limescale, limescale turns up in hard water areas more often that soft water areas (you will know which one you are in by how well you shampoo bubbles on your hair, hard water, it bubbles more than soft water).
if you think it;s dust, just clean out your water filter and ice cube trays, if it's limescale, your water filter will need a good scrub and a new filter on it.
hope that helps :)

Yes, that happens with my ice cubes also. I do not know what it is but I don't worry about it. So far I don't believe it has hurt me. The only thing I can think of is that it is lime that has built up in the water line for the icemaker in our freezer. We do have a water filter but we still have a problem with lime residue. Maybe it is the salt for the water filter. I don't really know.

Yes, we have this at our vacation home and ours is lime scale. Many people who live here do not use their electric dishwashers because the little white flecks stick to all the dishes, although putting vinegar in the final rinse takes some of it off. It is so bad that even with many different kinds of filters, we are not comfortable drinking the water, so we buy bottled water for drinking and making ice. As it is very hot and dry here, when we are going to be gone for any length of time, we put out large tubs of water to evaporate into the air both in the house and in the garage. This is to keep the walls from drying out and splitting. One summer a mouse drowned in the tub in the garage and when we got back 5 months later, this little mouse was coated with so much lime scale that it was the size of an orange.

Response to Kythe42 "Odd thing happening with my ice".
I see that the post I am responding to is 3 years old, but for those who may be reading this response, I have some information for you. I have been in the water filter business for some time and am familiar with the situation of white flakes appearing in your water. It is not dangerous or unhealthy. It is your carbon based water filter that is causing this to happen. Most likely, it is what is called "calcium precipitation," meaning that the natural calcium content in your water supply (which is normally there but unseen) because of the carbon in your filter's action on the water, is now becoming visable. It has alwasys been there. You just arn't able to see it when the water is not being filtered.
Is there a solution? First of all, the source of the calcium is in the water that is being supplied to your home which then goes through your filter. Can something be done about that? Well, no and yes. As long as the water to your home remains the same, the amount of calcium will be what it is. However, there is a product that can help called Scalewatcher, which can be found at PureAir-WaterForTheEarth.com that removes and prevents the formation of water scaling in your pipes caused by minerals. It keeps the minerals in suspension and acts like a water softener. Using the Scalewatcher product will prevent calcium precipitation from occuring by keeping the calcium in suspension and not allowing it to precipitate out and showing up as white flakes or particles in your ice and on your glassware.
I believe that this information may be helpful to you and to many others who may be experiencing a similar situation.
