Natural methods to get rid of fleas in carpet? |
| |
| I use frontline plus on all of our cats to keep fleas and ticks off of them. Problem is, now all those fleas are in our carpet! Yikes!! What's a safe way to get rid of them? We have a bird and a fish, plus I have asthma so don't want to set off a flea bomb or anything like that. I've heard of using mothballs in your vaccum sweeper and wondered if that really worked. I'm looking for ideas to get rid of the fleas that don't involve chemicals. Any suggestions would be appreciated? Thanks! | | | | | |

| | I use a somewhat similar method to catch and kill fleas. Use a night light, and put a container of soapy water underneath the night light. The fleas will be attracted to the light and will die in the soapy water. (The water must be soapy, I have seen plenty of fleas still alive in plain water) | | | |

| | My Brittany Spaniel got a bad case of fleas a few summers ago. What I did was buy some borax powder, it is used in laundry detergents ask someone who works at the store where you might locate it. Any way spread this over all of your floors evenly. Allow this to sit on your floors for at least an hour to two hours. Then you can vacuum this up. I would immediately remove the bag from the vacuum and tape it closed. Throw the bag away outside. Repeat this once a week for a couple of weeks to make sure that you have removed all of the fleas from your home. Another thing you might do is place some salt in the corners. The fleas will eat the salt and explode. | | | | | | |

| | I'd think I should be able to find borax in the laundry section at the grocery store. I'll look for it. Thanks! | | | |

| | I don't know if this will bother your asthma or not but this is what I did to get rid of fleas in my carpet. Before you get started you have to remove all sources of moisture from the room your treating, that means no birds or fish in the room, no water or anything step 1. Sprinkle corn starch or baby powder all over the carpet, every square inch. Put on a pair of socks and really grind it into the carpet. That will kill the eggs, it dries them up so they die. But you have to leave it in the carpet until step 2 is done. Step 2. Every night before bed, put a bowl of beer in the middle of the carpet to attract the live ones. They're attracted to the moisture but the alcohol kills them. You'll probably have to do it for several nights depending on how bad the infestation. Step 3. When you have no more live ones that show up in your bowl of beer then you should be able to vacuum the carpet and get all the eggs up. To help speed things up, there are night light flea killers you can usually find at pet store, your grocery store may even have them. You plug them in at night and they have a sticky trap under the light, no fumes. Hope that helps melanie, they are a pain aren't they! :D | | | | | | |

| | I have read that Borax works real well. You can find it the laundry section of most stores. You just sprinkle it on the carpet for a couple of hours, overnight if possible, and then vaccum it up. | | | | | | |

| | Before sprinkling anything on the carpet, you should vacuum. The vibration from the vacuum will attract the fleas. (This is how they find their prey, by the vibrations the animals, or humans, make while walking or moving.) Then, sprinkle what you prefer on there (you can pick up carpet powder for flea treatment at most any discount/grocery store), wait the allotted time, and vacuum it again. Also, dispose of the vacuum bag, or bag up the contents of the canister if it's bagless, immediately so that the fleas do not jump out of the vacuum. We have also tried putting cedar mothballs in our vacuum canister, but I am not sure how effective that really was. | | | |

| | I am sorry I have no rememdies for you but how did you get fleas in your house if you use the frontline? I use that on my dog and I have never had a problem with fleas in the house and he goes out to the bathroom and if we take him for walks and on nice days I leave him out on his chain for awhile to get some fresh air. It is a real pain trying to get rid of those darn fleas once they start. I had a problem years ago with them and I would just bomb the house and some times had to do that a couple times. Since they came out with the frontline and I have used it ever since I never had any problems. That is too bad you can't use any chemicals to get rid of them. I had heard too of buying those little powdered flea collars and cutting those up in the vaccuum but I couldn't see that working because of all the eggs they do lay and multiply so fast. Hope you are able to find something to help! | | | | | | |

| | I don't use the frontline year round. Only when the fleas and ticks are bad. Probably 6 months out of the year? I waited a little too long to get the frontline and they already had fleas. Ooops! LOL | | | |

| | Ok I am not sure how this really works but this is a tip my step mother uses at her house . You use any green liquid soap such as dishsoap , you place this in a bowl and if you can put a lamp or something over it and place it on the floor , the heat and the color of the green is supposed to attract the fleas and they jump in the soap and can't get back out . Another tip I was told about was to put something sweet and sticky in a bowl such as corn syrup , cover the bowl with tape or something and then punch holes in it , the fleas are supposed to jump in and get trapped because of the stickiness and with tape convering the top of the jar it makes it to hard to jump back out . Not sure how effective either of these tips are but thought it would be worth a try as I know others that have used these tips because of asthma problems or just didn't have the money for flea bombs . Another tip that does work that I have got from my vet is to vacumn everyday in every crack and corner in your house . Empty the bag from your vacumn outside so you don't have them escaping on you in the house . Also if there are any pets hanging around your house with fleas especially around your doorway outside , if they have fleas you will have a hard time getting rid of them out of your house as the fleas wait for you to open the door and then jump in and onto your pet and your furniture . Best of luck getting rid of them because they are a real nuissance and hard to get rid of . Take Care !! | | | | | | |

| | The fleas will naturally die if they have no access to the blood. If your treating your cats and other animals like dogs or other furry critters, then the fleas should die on their own in just a few days. I wouldn't worry about going crazy to kill them in the carpet, as they will die in a few days anyway. Just wait it out. | | | | | | |

| | It depends on how bad they get. Waiting isn't a great idea as they will start to infest the people in the house. | | | |

| | Re: fleas attacking people: I had a problem with fleas from the roommate's cats biting me a few years ago. I had some lavender essential oil and I spread some on my legs. It worked like a charm. Fleas hate it. Lavender's one of the few essential oils you can use undiluted on your skin. | | | |

| | I don't know of chemical free method to get rid of them. I had a similar situation when I first moved here (to a flea ridden part of the world) and my dog got my fleas. I used a hartz flea and tick house spray and it did the job wonderfully. I got it at Wal-mart I think. *****IMPORTANT READ BELOW******* The trick to getting rid of fleas is that what ever treatment you go with you need to repeat it once a month for 3 months. The living flea's lay eggs in the carpet (and everything else) that will hatch I believe 4-6 weeks later. Which is why you need to repeat the process to make sure they are all dead, including the newly hatched eggs. Flea infestations are a nightmare. If all else fails call in the professionals; the worse they get, the harder they are to get rid of. | | | | | | |

| | You're welcome. They are truly nasty. It was so hard to get rid of them because they spawn so fast. By the time you realize that you have fleas in the house, you usually have hundreds or thousands of them. | | | |

| | I heard this years ago and just tried it last year-same problem as you, I have 7 fish tanks, a parrot, and at the time a crawling baby...didn't want to use chemicals. Borax-the laundry booster, sprinkle it on the rug, and let it sit overnight, then vacuum real good. I don't know what it is about the Borax, some lady told me it suffocates them and absorbs the eggs....I know it has a lot of uses as well, but they don't list flea treatment on the box lol. But when I used it, it cut down a bunch on the fleas, in fact I didn't notice any after using that (and with the Advantix). Vacuum a lot too. I've also heard of putting a dog or cat flea collar in the vacuum cleaner bag/canister. I use Frontline Plus or Advantix as well, and it just takes time if you don't treat the house, but a lot of the fleas in the house will jump on the animals also. It's a good idea to treat the yard as well. I'm fortunate, we have a small fenced in area for my dogs, so it's a piece of cake to treat. I use the granules, think it's called Eliminator-from Walmart. Use the spreader to spread them around and then water it down. Let it dry before letting dogs back in there. Kills lots of creepy crawlies :) Also, I had bought some moth balls, my mom swears keeping a small paper cup of moth balls in the window sills keeps the spiders out. The smell was really over powering though, so I took them down. I'd be hesitant to use those around the bird, they can be super sensitive to smells, even killing them. Good luck!! | | | | | | |

| | We have 2 dogs also that are mostly outside dogs. I treat their yard every year - since it's outside the chemicals don't bother me. I use a spot-on treatment for the dogs too. I agree about the odor of mothballs. I tried that one last year around our flowers to keep the cats off them. Didn't work and it stunk! At least with using the mothballs in the vacuum sweeper I could dump them out as soon as I was done. Thanks for the tips! | | | |
