Home made Bread and Butter pickles! Have you ever made any pickles?

Another one of my grandmother's recipes for these scrumptious bread and butter pickles.
She made these every summer when she was alive for as long as I can remember. They were always a big hit at the family picnics. They are not only good on burgers but sandwiches also.
This one I have made before and they are so yummy!!!
BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES
12 cucumbers (about 6" long)
5 medium size onions
1/2 cup of salt
2 cups water
2 cups white vinegar
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
1 teaspoon celery seed
ICE CUBES
Wash and cut cucumbers into 1/2 inch slices
Alternately place layers of cucumbers and onions bowl with a little salt in each layer. Cover with a lot of ice cubes.
Let stand 3 hours.
Drain and rinse well with cold water.
Mix water vinegar sugar and spices in a large kettle add the cucumber slices and bring to a boil.
Add the cucumbers and onions and bring to a boil again.
Can in the usual way.

I was intrested when I saw yoiu had this recipe. I love trying new foods.
I had not heard of bread & butter pickles before.
As I love cucumbers, onions & mustrard, this is sure to be a hit with me.
Looks easy to prepare too.

My mom makes cucumbers onions and sour creme. Omgosh The taste is out of this world. I will have to try it with the mustard. I think I will like it that way.

year from my cukes but didn't use a recipe and... well

no i have never made pickeles all by myself but i know how to make pickeles because my mother used to prepae pickeles ,in my house my mom makes many kind of pickeles like of raw mangoes,chilles,jackfruit,carrot,lemon and many more but my favourite is stuffed red chillies pickeles

Thanks for the recipe. I usually buy the mix from the store and that is how I make mine. I don't have anyone to teach me how to can or make things like this so I have had to find things out on my own. I really appreciate that you took the time to write this down. Great recipe - I've made bread and butter pickles since I was a little girl - one of the things my Mom did for years and still does occasionally... One of my favoite pickles there have been years that I actually made them using cucumbers, onions, and dill that I raised myself - those were the best ever and even gave jars to Mom and others as gifts.
I never thought of it till now but I have a recipe section on my web site I should add bread and butter pickles to it.

Yes, I do make a lot of pickles….I live on an island and pickles are a must have with almost every meal!
I pickle cucumbers, mango, papaya and eggs….yes that’s right I said eggs…lol…A lot of people freak out when they first see it in a jar, but then after they try it for the first time they love it!
It is pretty simple, they all start out the same way and the ingredients are so simple.
All I do is add vinegar, salt, garlic and crushed hot peppers.

I have never made pickles before. This sounds like a wonderful recipe! I'm definatley up for making them. We all love bread & butter pickles, especially my grandkids.
