How well do you know US geography?

I found this game (link below) last night online and I quickly got addicted! The premise is to place each state where it belongs on the map.... not nearly as easy as it sounds! I was shocked at how hard it was to place some of the states. Everytime you start over, there are different states that come up first and even though I mostly know the general area (east, south, north, west) that they belong in, I couldn't usually get it right. Once you have filled in some of the states, it becomes easier to fill in the blanks. I just played again right now and got the following score: Score: 88.23 Avg Error: 13 Miles Time: 199 seconds Try it out and let me know your scores!! Did you find this really hard or really easy?? http://www.shockwave.com/gamelanding/fiftystates2.jsp

That is awesome! I didn't do all that bad but I was surprised that I got some pretty easy ones wrong. Thanks for posting this, I am always looking for stuff like this for homeschooling!

Cool! Hope your kids like it :) I was surprised too when I was positive that NJ goes here, or LA goes there, and it said WRONG! Not only that, but it was really far away too. If only they had games like this when I was in 6 grade geography - I would have played all the time and aced the tests :) Now they should make it a little harder and add in "what is the capital" of the states too b/c kids are always quizzed on that.

The Us is an area which I'm pretty rusty on myself. Being from england I find it to big lol.. Seriously though I know where about 10 major places are and the rest I know but I wouldn't be able to pin point exactly on an unmarked map. I'd get it all wrong lol ~Joey

Well... you probably are about equal to a lot of Americans! It's hard to put these states in the right place, especially when I've only been to a handful of them.

Thanks for the link! I thought this was really fun. Of course it gets much easier as you go along. My score was 76.24, avg error 62 miles, time 424 seconds. But then I am from the UK so I can't really be expected to do any better than that. I imagine that if there were a map of the UK and you had to place all the different counties on there then Americans wouldn't be very good at that. Not that I would be either. lol.

Yes depending on which states come up first, it can be real tough. You didn't do too bad though. It's good practice, although, as long as we have computers and maps who cares if we know this stuff ;)

This is really great. There are some states that are really easy, but some that are a lot harder. I didn't do too bad I guess, but not as well as you. I'll have to try it again tomorrow and see if I can do better next time when I'm not so tired.

Well I played a few times before posting my score :) Maybe with a few more plays you would get the same. I agree some states are a breeze (like hawaii! haha) Basically you can't go wrong with Texas, Florida, Michigan, but all the rest, well they get tough!

True, there are several that are almost impossible to mess up. It also depends a lot on where you start. If they gave me the edges first I'm sure that I would do better with the ones in the center. :P
