What if there's only one language in the world? |
|
I wish there's only one global language. Everybody understands each other. No need for translators. No need for language teachers. Time spent for learning a new language could be spent for a better undertakings. Money and effort lavishly spent for translations, international education could be spent for the improvement of people's lives. Read full article here http://pedagogist.blogspo...

1. ky1119 (538) | 1 year ago | Think about how boring that would be. Think of the culture that so many people would lose because of losing their language. The rest of us would lose out on such a learning experience as well. If we all speak on uniform language, then we all are going to eventually live in uniform countries, in uniform houses, with our uniform spouses, kids, and pets. No, there doesn't need to be one global language.

3. ibuemma (856) | 1 year ago | It won't be so fun at all. My hubby and me has different mother tongue. When I got mad, sometimes i "cursing" in my mother tongue that he don't understand what I'm saying. He just know I'm mad. And sometimes I feel relief that he has no idea what I'm saying...LOL

4. towongfoo27 (856) | 1 year ago | Well, I am partial to language and its linguistics, so this thought as to why there isn't one language in the world may sound biased. I am glad there isn't one global language, because then the world would be very boring and possibly even more confusing. For example, if every culture spoke the global language of Thai, the common-place language might be belittled to the point that language itself becomes less valuable, and then you wouldn't have such value placed on Thai in the present, at least to the point that you could learn it in college. Books would be junk mail. Written documents like the Declaration of Independence would be a somewhat a joke via little to no value. And since learning a language requires effort and time, the people learning it would devalue themselves if they undertook such a task. Secondly, time and migration is what allows culture to differentiate itself by culture and not language (cause language takes longer to learn than to survive assimilation to a culture. Is this a trick question via the chicken and the egg via culture and language? I think culture come first in this case.)Learning language is a worthwhile effort, and I'm pretty sure all the language translators in the world won't exceed the national budget. I also don't think money is "lavishly" being spent here, unless financial aid or a trust fund is involved, because the price of education has and still is sky rocketing. Believe me, very few people can afford to lavishly waste money where an edumacation is concerned. Besides, I thought education, no matter the choice of study, enriched people's lives instead of the opposite. I know it did mine. Last but not least I think maybe you conflate the culture of a people with the language of a people, too. Keep them separate if possible, yet that is hard to do. Case in point. I just think when one devalues language, she devalues herself for learning it, instead of getting mad at the individual person in the culture from which the language is spoken.

Jemina (2240) | 1 year ago | First, I want to clarify myself that I'm not implying that one language is superior from the rest. Out of my desperation of wanting to be understood I just thought how easy it had been if we could understand each other. Language and culture are inseparable like the two sides of a coin. I am learning Thai and the culture embedded in the language but as of present my knowledge is still limited and it makes it difficult for me to communicate. However, I didn't mean to want some languages to be extinct. As a matter of fact I have another blog about my concern for dying languages. you can view it here: http://www.blogchex.com/pedagogist/??

Jemina (2240) | 1 year ago | Thanks, Shaun. Actually, sometimes when I let out my frustration I just want somebody to listen. I don't really expect everyone to agree with me as it it next to impossible as having one global language.

Shaun72 (11129) | 1 year ago | Well we all want someonwe to listen to us when we are upset. So that is understandable.

7. sarahruthbeth22 (7223) | 1 year ago | Even if we all spoke the same language, we would still need translators because each region would have their own take on the language. Like here in the States, we all speak American English but it is different in each State. We use the same words but their meaning varies.

8. giftsandbagscom (10612) | 1 year ago | I don't think this would be cool. We have Islands of people who would never learn to speak. They would just shake their heads yes or no. it is just not a good thing.

Jemina (2240) | 1 year ago | That's true, language and culture best define a person. And it would be sad if languages die because they are overtaken by a more dominant one. I actually don't agree with it myself.

10. Asylum (3236) | 1 year ago | This was suggested by L L Zamenhof, who spent decades trying to create a language which would be pronouncable by all cultures. The result was Esperanto, which is probably only spoken by a couple of thousand people across the globe. The practical use of a universal language is obvious, but it would be difficult to persuade people to dismiss their own language and therefore part of their culture.
