Have you ever read the Bible? If you have, which version is your favorite?  email this discussion to a friend?

One of the most important books a person can ever own or read is the Bible. It is the bestselling Book of all time, and best of all, it is God's Word! There are a number of versions of the Bible out there for people today to read--word-for-word literal versions (like the King James Version or the American Standard Version), thought-for-thought versions (like the New International Version--NIV, or the Complete Jewish Bible--CJB), or paraphrases (like the New Living Bible). My favorites are the King James Version (KJV) and the CJB, which helps me understand the Jewishness of the Bible. I also have software that I downloaded for free (the software designer takes donations). My version of the software has about 30 translations, around 15 Bible commentaries, 3 Greek and Hebrew word studies, and Bible dictionaries, maps, etc. I like to sit at my computer while I read my Bible so I can access this useful software to do word studies, compare translations, get maps, or read what one of the commentators has written to get a different perspective on a verse that I am thinking about.
Have you ever read the Bible? If so, what's your favorite version? Do you use a "hardcopy" or do you use online Bible resources or Bible software? I'd like to hear your input!

I agree with you there are a lot of different versions of the Bible. I have a King James Version and a New American Standard Version. Those two are my favorites.

I like both of those translations, too. I'm glad you're reading the Bible. How long have you had your Bible versions? Thanks for commenting on my post. :)

The King James version I have been reading for a long time. I just started reading the New American Standard about year ago. Thanks for the best response.

I've lived in the Philippines before. I don't know much Tagalog, but if you are a Filipino, then it makes sense that you would prefer the Tagalog version. You didn't really finish your sentence though. You said, "I like the book where Jesus taught... and that's all I saw of your comment.
I also have other translations in different languages that I use sometimes: the Bible in Palauan, the Turkish Kutsal Kitap, and the Hebrew Tanach. Out of those, the only one I truly understand is the Palauan one. :)

God's word? really, I thought Moses started it all by writing the commandments and about the exodus from Egypt. Everything before that in the book was stolen from legends from other, more ancient cultures. As for Jesus, he was one among many who did 'miracles' and magic, but he just had better press.

You don't really believe those things, do you? What proof do you have for those claims ("everything before that in the book was stolen from legends from other more ancient cultures" and "Jesus...was one among many who did 'miracles' and 'magic'")? What you said about Jesus contradicts God's Word and the words of Jesus Christ Himself. Jesus didn't do majic [sic], and He didn't have better press. He never went outside of Israel (except when He was a baby, Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt for a year or two), the vast majority of people rejected Him even though they were very interested in having Him heal them, or feed them in a miraculous way...funny how people are the same today...they want to see a miracle, they want to be healed, but they don't want to trust God.
Beginning in the 1st Century every world power tried to snuff out both the Jews and the Christians, they burned all the Bibles or scrolls (depending on which century) that they could get their hands on. Even today, most people don't want to hear about the Bible or Jesus Christ. Better press? I don't think so. The reason God's Word has endured until today is because God Himself Who is sovereign over everything, has made sure it survived intact, and even further, "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall never pass away" (Matthew 24:31; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33).

I've been reading the King James' Verson (KJV) of the bible for years. I've read other versions such as the New International Version (NIV), the Revised Standard Version (RSV), the Authorized Version (AV), the Good New Bible, the Yoruba (my native tongue) Version, the Amplified Bible and currently the New Living Translation. I love the KJV best because the version retains some words that have important spiritual meanings (newer versions of the bible many times use today's language for such special words hence 'throwing away' the spiritual meaning).

Do I say that the KJV is the best bible? No, not at all. I feel the answer to that question is personal. I advise any person to use the bible version(s) that he feels at home with. The reason is simple, as much as I love the KJV, it has its own shortcomings too. Moreover, I've read christian books that quote from other bible translations like the Wuest Translation and such translations sometimes have better view of what the Lord is conveying than the KJV.

I live in Africa and we don't have opportunity of having many versions of the bible in our bookstores. I love to have other bible translations especially the Wuest Translation and the Amplified Bible among others for one of the keys, I believe, to study the bible is to compare a passage from different translations. The best teacher, of course is the Holy Spirit.

I encourage every believer in Christ not to just read the bible for reading sake (whichever version you use) but to study the bible and allow the Holy Spirit to do the interpretation. Man has his limitations whereas the Holy Spirit is unlimited. God blessings.

I have read the Bible many times, usually the King James Version, but also the New International. I especially like the Psalms. I'm not sure it's God's word anymore then some other writings, After all, Christianity is only about two thousand years old, many religions date back much further. The belief that only one can be right has caused many problems in the world. If we are ever going to have peace in the world, indeed if there is going to be a world at all for our children, we will all have to change.
