Buying a Used Car

We have decided to buy a second car. The truck that my Hubby is using to get back and forth to work belongs to our friend. It is costing a fortune for him to drive back and forth to work. Today we looked at a 1994 Buick that we found yesterday. The asking price was $650. There was a little rust on the body. It needed new tires. The brake lights didn't work. The muffler was a bit loud. There was something under the car that hung a bit low, looked like a cable or something. After figuring out what it would cost for us to make the car road worthy, Hubby offered $500. The owner refused his offer. Tomorrow we are looking at a Ford Taurus that is going for $700 and have been told it is road ready. It is at a local junkyard. The owner goes to auctions and buys up cars that he can resell. He does make sure the car is safe. I will ask that tax, title and registration be included in the asking price.

You are making a wise move buying that way. It is also cheaper to insure a used car. Taurus cars have a very good reputation for being long lived. I have loved every one I have had. I even have my eye on a Taurus wagon at a junkyard my hubby frequents. Having old cars usually means you need a spare, or a fall back plan, but this one sounds good. Good luck.

Sometimes you get lucky and find a car that is worth the money you spend on it and if it needs fixing up, the costs can be minimal.

Good luck on finding a good car. I have had some good luck going to auctions. The county and city where I live has an auction every now and then. They sell city and county owned cars. They have kept up with the upkeep, oil change, brake jobs etc. I have gotten good deals before.

I have seen auctions in other states. They aren't available in ours.

I hope you get a good one. We have had many used cars and they haven't always lasted that long. Some people try to rip you off and not tell you whats really wrong with the car. My daughter-in-law just recently got a used car and they told her they had just replaced the transmission. My guess is they took it out, blew off the dust and then replaced it.lol. About a month after getting it, the transmission went in it. So just be very careful with what you buy and good luck.

The car we looked at today belonged to someone who I have known for quite a while. She was pointing out the flaws as quickly as I was! She said she didn't realize all that was wrong with it and wouldn't recommend us buying it.

We just bought a 98 ford escort and had to put in 700 dollars of repairs on it. We bought it for 600 so that puts it in the range of a reliable car for the couple of years or so that we run them. Hubby says it is the nicest car he has ever driven. We talked the guy down and good thing since we did have to make some repairs to make it well road worthy. I wish you luck in finding that vehicle that allows you to work and earn your way in the world.

Thank you Willowlady. My worry is that the truck will breakdown and that would mean that I would have to rise early in the day, drive hubby to work and go to work myself, and them pick him up after I am finished. Long day that would be.

Hubby and I did that for a couple of years and as it turns out ... it was about the best time of our young childless lives. Good luck to you.

I am sorry that I am late at commenting on this article. I have not been online for a few days. Did you buy the Taurus? I strongly suggest taht you make sure the vehicle you purchase was not in the flood down south. There are alot of them surfacing now all over the US.

We passed on the Taurus too. We have been looking around in Craigslist to see what we can find too.

I would suggest you get it checked out by a mechanic as well. I remember my foster mother telling me about the troubles she had buying used cars and having to take them to the repair shop again and again. Also with the gas price going up, wouldn't a newer and more fuel efficient car be better? I hope you do not have trouble with the car and make sure that the former owner is the former owner and that he did not steal it and sell it to the junk dealer to make some illegal cash.

I think, that used cars are fine...I would just make sure, that your husband checks it out really good,if he buys from a private owner...some people don't tell you everything, what is wrong with the car..and trying make money off people...

I am glad to hear that you decided to pass on that Buick. That vehicle sounds like a hazard to me and would not have been worth all the repairs that are needed. Hopefully the Taurus will work out well and that it is in decent shape and safe to drive. Good luck with your new used car.

The Taurus was not meant to be. We are still looking and hopeful that something good will come our way.

Good luck on your car search. We have just purchased a 1992 Buick Skylark. Someone my husband works with sold it for $75, because they could not get it to start. It was out of gas!! They had told us that it had 3/4 of a tank. It does have a few problems that we have to fix. But it does run!!

Someone asked me what we were looking for in a car. I said good tires, a working radio and if possible good gas mileage.

Well I hope that it does get included for you As for the other Owner I am glad that you did not go for that as far as I can tell he ripping People of selling the car like that for that Price He should do all the repairs on it and then sell it for that Price

The guy is a wheeler dealer type. He just wanted to get rid of the car, but wanted the most cash for it. It would have cost us at least another $600 to make the repairs.

good luck in finding a good used car. My hubby looked for a year before he got a good one. This car was for my granddaughter. She turned 17 and needed a car to go to work with.

Fortunately we do have a truck that belongs to our friend. But the cost of gas is making us want something more economical.

Sometimes you can get great deals from places like that. I bought my car for 400 from a junkyard and have been driving it for almost a year now. I would much rather buy my cars from a junkyard than from a mechanic. I have had much better luck from them.

The Taurus was not in the best shape. The owner told us to call back on Friday and he may have something different.

I think having a 2nd car is always a good idea, especially if you don't actually own one in the first place. I guess things here in Oz are easier with 2nd hand cars - you just take a mechanic along with you & have them go over the engine - you cant be too fussy when buying an older car, in regards to the way the body looks. Just be careful with the whole $700 Taurus because if the car is worth that amount, or more, then i would sell it for $700 (if it were mine etc) & wouldn't add in anything else for you as there would be too much loss for me having to cover your expenses - does that make sense? Meaning, if the car price is good & it's an all over good deal - don't try & push your luck by wanting more for the same amount. I don't know what your title, tax & registration costs are but here, registration for 3 months alone is $120 - so i wouldn't spend that putting rego on a car i was seling if the price i was selling it for unregistered was more than reasonable. Good luck & i hope you find something at a good price that is in good enough condition for you :)
