Don't mess with the Hippos |
| |
| I learned something reading the newspaper this morning. It seems that in Kansas City, Missouri zoo; two teenaged boys were trying to impress a girl (like that's never happened before.) They jumped the fence at a hippo Exhibit and began to throw rocks and taunt the "dumb beasts" The hippos turned around and charged the boys! Neither the boys or the animals were hurt, but zoo officials warned that hippos can run faster than humans, despite their huge bulky frame. They also have the teeth and the intellegence to do bodily harm if their territory is attacked! They always look so docile playing in the water at the animal parks.! | | | | | |

| | Any animal when taunted and teased has the capability of retaliating. I would hope that parents would teach their children better however that does not seem to be the case. They are wild animals and should be treated with respect. Would be nice if these kids were made to volunteer at the Zoo so that they would learn better as punishment. | | | | | | |

| | I was thinking somewhere along the lines of cleaning up after these animals now! I have tried to teach my children to respect all that they come in contact with, human or animal. They all love dogs, cats etc...and have a healthy fear of wild animals. | | | |

| | Good to know and a fitting job so that they would understand hopefully more about the feelings that animals do have. Thanks for responding to me. | | | |

| | I used to work for an attorney. One of the things that he would ask for when dealing with Teenagers is that they do community service hours (and usually lots of them) in whatever capacity they had vandalized. It got interesting at times. | | | |

| | Thought really seriously about writing a book. But, alas because of confidential information I couldn't do it. I couldn't write it generically either. Some of them were one in a million and they would know immediately that I was writing about them :) | | | |

| | wow. I hadn't heard that. You don't think of them being ferocious. Because most of the time when you see them they look like they're just playing in the water. And then there's the shape of their mouth that makes them look like they are smiling? | | | |

| | They said part of what makes them so dangerous, is that they are often hidden in the rivers. So someone will be coming along in a canoe, and the hippos will come up beneath it and turn it over. Which results in a drowning death, or death by whatever is in the river, including the hippo. And they are surprisingly quick on land. Glad I'm not in Africa, for more than one reason, of course. | | | |

| | I'd be careful saying that to God. lol I told my husband when he told me he thought God was calling him to preach that I would follow him anywhere. But not to asked me to live in two towns here in Arkansas. His first two churches were in those cities. | | | |

| | Welcome again News Lady If i can revert to my teaching and have a little lesson here on hippos they may help to see more into this discussion Hope this helps Hippos average 3.5 meters (11 ft) long, 1.5 meters (5 ft) tall at the shoulder, and weigh from 1,500 to 3,200 kilograms (3,300 to 7,000 lb). They are approximately the same size as the White Rhinoceros, and experts are split on which is the largest land animal after the species of elephant. Male hippos appear to continue growing throughout their lives; females reach a maximum weight at around age 25. Females are smaller than their male counterparts and normally weigh no more than 1,500 kg. The value of 3,200 kg is often quoted as being the upper limit of weight for a male hippo. However, larger specimens than this have been documented, including one which weighed about 4,500 kg (10,000 lb) and measured about 5 meters (16 ft) long. Their skin is 4 centimeters (1.5 in) thick, and accounts for 25% of their weight. Even though they are bulky animals, hippopotamuses can run faster than a human on land. Estimates of their running speed vary from 30 km/h (18 mph) to 40 km/h (25 mph), or even 50 km/h (30 mph). The hippo can maintain these higher estimates for only a few hundred meters or yards. The eyes, ears, and nostrils of the hippo are placed high on the roof of the skull. This allows them to spend most of the day with most of their body submerged in the waters and mud of tropical rivers to stay cool and prevent sunburn. | | | | | | |

| | And, what is the most dangerous animal in Africa - not lios, not crocs, HIPPOS! More people die after hippo attacks than any other animal. | | | | | | |

| | That's what I'm reading now that I've done research. it just didn't seem like the thing that they would do. I've always thought them to be something sweet and cuddly. I know that no wild animal is truly that though. each of them have their own defense mechanism in order to survive. | | | |

| | I think hippos are so ugly. I never really liked them. But I think I would rather look at a hippo than to visit the reptile houses! Eeeeuu! | | | | | | |

| | I do not do snakes and really don't like lizards and such either. I will wait outside while the kids go looking at all the snakes. even when they are in zoos and on the other side of the glass...it's too close. | | | |

| | I did not know that hippos could run faster than a human. Wow those boys sure took a scary chance by pulling that stunt. Hope the girl was worth it. They could have gotten killed or hurt really bad. That was a pretty dumb move on their part. | | | | | | |

| | I didn't know they could run that fast either. My kids were on the St. Louis zoo site last night. They are the 2nd largest animals on the earth and can run 30 miles an hour. That's amazing to me. | | | |

| | We were watching "World's dirtiest Jobs" the other night and Mike was in a zoo. Have you ever looked at a hippo's teeth? It looks like there are only like 4 of them, but they are long and razor sharp and they point in 4 different directions! | | | |

| | luckily those kids are unharmed. i guess those kids were terrified seeing that hippo charged at them. hope that they will have more barriers between humans and animals so that no people will attempt to get inside the territory of the animals. there are lot of stories of people who get too close to animals. and end up almost being eaten by those animals. and i have heard so many sad and shocking stories of people experiencing those ferocious attacks. and it's really scary to hear that kind of true stories. hope that peole will learn from these experiences of other people and will never attmept to do that such folish things. | | | | | | |

| | You would think that something with teeth that size...people would have better sense. Kids today just don't think because most of them believe that they are invincable. I have a 20 year old son that is that way. i just want to smack some sense into him sometimes. | | | |
