How do I get the Smell out of Leather?

My husband has a leather coat for work. It is as good Police jacket. It is seven months old. It is leather, made in South Australia, probably cows leather.
Ever since he has had this coat, it has a very bad smell. It is not the natural smell of leather. It appears to have not been treated properly with chemicals, or whatever one is supposed to do when preparing leather.
We have tried washing/ soaking it at least twice with Wool Wash to get rid of the smell. Nothing has worked so far.
Does anyone know of a way to get rid of this bad smell from the leather? It is not in other Police jacklets that his colleagues wear.

Hi Jenny, I would have to say ask the dry cleaners or they may even be able to get it out for you.... Good Luck ......

You can put it in a trash bag with fabric softner sheets and leave it in there closed up for awhile. You could spray it with febreeze.../ and or lysol. or consult with a dry cleaners for advice, which because its leather, may be the best choice. Its possible that there are some leather cleaners that you can use from home.

I have a friend who is a leather worker for http://www.thomaslyte.com/ and she tells me hanging out in the air is the only thing you can do about most odours that get into leather. For a coat she reccomends using a dry cleaning bag with fabreeze* sheets pinned inside then hung on the line.
* Not sure if this would be the right brand name in oz, but basically the fragrancing sheets you can buy to put in your dryer.
