Believe it or Not!!! Pentagon Paid $998,798 to Ship Two 19-Cent Washers

I saw this on the news last night and could not believe it. I worked in the military Procurement Department and an expenditure such a this would have set off big red flags. I wonder if some of the higher military officials did not have sticky fingers? Do you think this was just an innocent mistake?? Aug. 16 (Bloomberg) -- A small South Carolina parts supplier collected about $20.5 million over six years from the Pentagon for fraudulent shipping costs, including $998,798 for sending two 19-cent washers to a Texas base, U.S. officials said. The company also billed and was paid $455,009 to ship three machine screws costing $1.31 each to Marines in Habbaniyah, Iraq, and $293,451 to ship an 89-cent split washer to Patrick Air Force Base in Cape Canaveral, Florida, Pentagon records show. The owners of C&D Distributors in Lexington, South Carolina -- twin sisters -- exploited a flaw in an automated Defense Department purchasing system: bills for shipping to combat areas or U.S. bases that were labeled ``priority'' were usually paid automatically, said Cynthia Stroot, a Pentagon investigator. C&D's fraudulent billing started in 2000, Stroot, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service's chief agent in Raleigh, North Carolina, said in an interview. ``As time went on they got more aggressive in the amounts they put in.'' The price the military paid for each item shipped rarely reached $100 and totaled just $68,000 over the six years in contrast to the $20.5 million paid for shipping, she said. ``The majority, if not all of these parts, were going to high-priority, conflict areas -- that's why they got paid,'' Stroot said. If the item was earmarked ``priority,'' destined for the military in Iraq, Afghanistan or certain other locations, ``there was no oversight.'' The scheme unraveled in September after a purchasing agent noticed a bill for shipping two more 19-cent washers: $969,000. That order was rejected and a review turned up the $998,798 payment earlier that month for shipping two 19-cent washers to Fort Bliss, Texas, Stroot said. http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20070816/pl_bloomberg/ardg6dwccmfi;_ylt=ApVSEteGQVFt8BjBBfOoHtKpg9IF

I tell ya it makes me wonder how many other times these "mistakes" have happened under the thrown of King Bush. It's to the point nothing surprises me at all. What I so dearly hope with everything in me is, the new President gets in there and launches an investiation on the jerk and all of his flunkies. It would be a happy day to see the Shrub actually pay for all the crap he has either done or allowed done while he has been in charge.

The "Shrub"???? I love it and I agree. When I think of Clinton getting impeached for a personal "boo-boo" and the Shrub is getting away with destroying the country. It makes you wonder were our priorities are at.

Unfortunately I'm not surprised at all! The oversight in government spending is all but nonexistent. Hopefully there will be more people who pay attention after this story. After all, don't military personnel pay taxes, too? If they don't, someone in their family does. This is our money, people! Watch where it goes!

Its a really amazing news. In our country too high officials and high political leaders are extorting money billions figure from government fund. USA earned and looted billions billions dolar from Iraq on the plea of deadly weapon in Saddam's godown but not found so by fake news if anyone can loot billions billions dollar so by supplying small goods taking below million dollar is not bad.

Thats pretty sad and so very typical of a system where there are no checks and balences or the checks and balences are corrupt. I would be willing to bet that we could eliminate our nationsl debt within a couple of years by eliminating this kind of stupid graft. I am sure the public would be devastated by what actually goes in with government spending.

It doesn't surprise me one bit. Our government is forever wasting tax payers money. My hubby was in the army and we've seen on base housing being renovated when there was no need for there wasn't a thing wrong with them but they just HAD to put siding on them. They were made of brick for creeps sake! There's no need to cover brick! lol It makes me sick though to see that when there's so many others that could use the money but yet it's being wasted away just to make someone else look good. UGH!

I know exactly what you mean. I worked for the the U.S. Facility Engineers and I saw these kind of "improvements" on a daily basis.

This is a time we need Sam Donaldson. I forgot what program he did this on, but for a while, he had a spot on one of those news shows, like 20/20 (maybe it was that one) that he exposed a lot of government waste. This was years ago (before Y2K), & one of the things he discovered was they were paying someone (at that time) over $10 per hour just to watch different brands of ketchup flow. The details of it, I forgot. Anyway, that over $10 per hour back then would translate to probably $25 or $30 per hour.

Amazing what our tax dollars go for. I hope they find a way to get it back, but I really doubt it. I am sure others are doing similar things.

When I read this, I think of all the good uses the money could have been spent on. This wasn't an inocent mistake. It was a greedy individual ripping off the system to line his/ her own pocket. This will affect all you US tax payers. I know your military budget is huge, & rip offs like this, means less money can be spent on where it is really needed. Like hospitals, schools, roads., etc.
