Pose I was just thinking yesterday that I wante to start a discussion on this very topic! I have in the past attempted to retrace my family tree. I have to admit though that I got lazy and put aside all my efforts and now I can't find any of it! lol So I have to start all over again. The good thing is that I remember some places to go and look and some people to ask. I didn't get back too far, only about 250 years. How about you?

I am not very interested in my family history. But actually sometimes my dad will mention it to me. I know there were several famous people in my family long time ago. But after all it's the history. We shall not always mention how great our ancestors were. We shall try to do better by our own:)

I have managed to trace back 6 generations on my Father's side here in England. I would love to trace my Mother's side too, but sadly that's impossible, because she came from Minsk (in Belarussia), which was mostly destroyed in World War II), and my maternal Grandmother was from Moscow and had to leave during the Revoluton, so all records have been destroyed. I have pieced together as much as I can from Russian relatives, but it isn't really enough to go on. Intertesting discussion - thanks.

Hi, Pose123. I know a lot of people that enjoy this as a hobby. I love looking at the stuff they have uncovered and learning about family members. But I do not have success whenever I try to do research myself. I could use a lot of direction from someone who knows what they are doing in this area.

Hi Pose123,
I don't have my notes for the exact date, but my cousin on my Mom's side has done some research and I got information from an Aunt on my Dads side, so I can go back to the 1700's on both sides.

I did mine some years ago, I got to do about 6 generations down a couple of lines but only because they had unusual names, it is very hard if you are trying to find common names. It is a very interesting thing to do good luck with it..

Hi there. With family history on my moms side, we are lucky enough to have both our grandparents living and very knowledgeable about that side of the family... My dad was taught at an early age by his mom and dad, who are now deceased, and there fore my siblings and I have very good knowledge on our family history... We can go back as far as, great great great great grand parents on our moms side and great great great grand parents on our dads side... This knowledge of family history is quiet normal to know in my ethnicity/Maori, family history/whakapapa is special and looked at as sacred, to know your family history is to know your rights and entitlements to family land, people, family/whanau...
