HELP!!! I cant quit smoking email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 62/100. BayleighGray (1793)1 year ago

I'm 35 and I have been smoking since I was 15. I cant stop. And Im not sure why it is. I have had worse addictions in my life and have stopped them cold turkey never to relapse and try again. And they were worse addictions than nicotine. I think its a bit extreme to make nicotine illegal but I really think that is the only way I would be able to quit. They are too accessible. When I started smoking cigarette packs sold at $1.20 per pack, today you pay 3 times that and I always said I would quit when they got to be $3 and then again at $4, but Im still doing it. And I really worry about my health and how I look. Sometimes Im even embarassed to be seen smoking, but it doesnt deter me from doing it. Im sitting here now with no cigarettes and fighting the urge to go and buy some. Does anyone have any suggestions on how they quit? I really do need help!

You are the only one who has to do this yourself.

Sorry for that comment, but its what i truly feel. It happens with us too, that we get addicted to things and some how cant leave them, no matter how hard we may try. And then one day, we feel that this is bad for us and i have to stop this, but we say how and we seek others help, but no one but we ourselevs can help us out there.

If you know what you are doing is wrong, that itself, the self realisation is half the battle won for you. Once you know its wrong, then you also know whats the right, thats the second phase. The final phase is pushing yourself to stop the wrong. You have to do that yourself. Tell yourself to stop, that its bad for you, that i have to stop smoking. And you will.

You will be surprised to see that you will stop within a day, if you will it that is. Its all in the mind, if you say i wont smoke from tomorrow and will it and are determined, then you wont, and you would have quitted smoking. Its just a mattter of getting down to doing it.

I am sure that if you try really hard, you can, though you dont have to try that hard too, as in a jiffy you can leave it, if you want to. No matter hat others may tell you, or what doctors may suggest or what friends or family may say, nothing works but you, so go ahead and just say NO.

No worries! Yes it needs to be heard. I just get so insane feeling when I dont have any cigarettes! Its like something that I have to think about every SECOND of the day. Im not working at the moment and Im sure that has a lot to do with it, I dont have something else to distract me right now. Its even worse trying to sit here on the PC and not have one, Ive made it a habit and a hard one to break. I just thought I could get some suggestions on ways others have quit. Ive tried the gum didnt work lol Ive heard too many risks involved with patches and Ive read a lot of articles on how to quit. Maybe deep down inside me I really dont want to quit. Im still trying though! Thank you for your response!

Thanks for the quick response! I am sorry for you, though i feel now, that maybe youre not occupied enough, and that could be a major factor which add to this problem too. Maybe if you leave the house for sometime of the day, and try to get a job or do some other hobby, like gardening etc may take your mind off. Or then maybe like you mentioned that, you want to smoke while on the computer too, maybe you can smoke, and go slow at it, and try to close the cigaratte in bewteen, make it half and later light that other half, say after 1-2 hours, so that you reduce it gradually, plus you would be satisfied that you are having it too.Of course best is to just drop it, but like you say that maybe you dont ant to leave it, that you have to decide, till then maybe you can try to reduce smoking to half the amount you used to.

Bayleigh!
No one can help you really! It is only you that can do it...a sad fact, but true. I say that and not to be callous at all, but to try to quit smoking is the very hardest thing I have ever done.
I tried everything recently and the only way I ever quit was to use the nicotine gum. And I quit on and off, once for a year, another time for a year, and another time for over 2 years! I am trying now again, and am going to get the nicotine gum again..is the only thing that ever worked for me personally.
I can't do it cold turkey, because my environment is too stressful. And believe me that is a good reason not to quit, no matter what anyone else says. You don't want to get sick over it!
I tried the patch...made me sick sick sick.
I tried the chantix pill...made me sick sick sick.
And so, when I get a few dollars soon I hope, I am going back to the gum.
Well, that is my way of quitting.
Once you do quit, and you will, believe me, you have the desire...Do NOT pick up a cigarette! Big mistake.
Well, just my two cents here.
Wish I could help you more.
But wanted you to know that someone does understand the addiction.
Regards
Good Luck

Thanks! I did see they had a new gum that had some flavor to it. lol Before when I tried to use it it tasted like an ash try lol that should have been enough to make me quit. I truly do dislike how my house smells, my clothes, my car, Im so sure my breath! I mean my friends say that they dont notice what Im talking about they always say they smell my air freshner or my perfume. Id like to think they wouldnt lie! lol So I think that is just my conscious talking to me telling me its time but my impulses wont let me. I do need a job! And Im looking for one. I just finished a summer class and I live in a small town where there is not much hope for a full time job. I can control it and deal with it if I make it my focal point of the day. Ive made smoking such a part of my everyday life that its making it harder than ever to quit. Yes I added you as my friend, thank you very much! Ill keep you posted.

you can do a lot of things instead of smokings cigarretes. go find a hobby that will distract you from smoking. if your not doing anything, this is when your mind think about smoking, but when your doing something else, you will eventually overcome smoking. you better stop smoking now because the more you smoke, the sooner you die because of illnesses you get from smoking. this alone should drive you to stop smoking. think about your health. think about your future. think of something that will quit yourself from smoking. no matter how hard it is, keep trying. gum, patches. don't be a quitter. i am sure you will be very happy when you quit smoking. think about the people that care about you. i care about you that's why i'm writing a response to your statement.

myLot reputation of 62/100. BayleighGray (1793)  1 year ago

Thank you Maxsee, I do care about me and Im really trying hard. I can stop for a while but I will go right back to smoking. I smoke because Im stressed and when Im not smoking Im really stressed!

yes i have the answer!!!!!!!! go to your doctor and get a prescpition for chantix,. it works, i was a chain smoker for 30 yrs been on medicine 2 months (you take it 3 months). from dy 1 i didn't crave a cig.its works with the brain and withdraws you from the nicotine. i am on so many medicines for health reasons and i can take this, so don't worry if your on other meds. it its great!! try to quit before & never suceeded. good luck. go for it!!!!

myLot reputation of 62/100. BayleighGray (1793)  1 year ago

Yea The Hair Dresser mentioned that in her response. I had not heard of it before. Id like to know how your doing throughout your last month of the meds. If you dont mind keeping me informed. Im going to do some research on it. Thank you for your response.

Don't give up though. You just have to keep trying. I know from experience as my dad was a heavy smoker. And although it took him really long to quit, the main point was that he never gave up. I'm guessing you are a heavy smoker too and so it will harder to quit. But the main thing you need to keep in mind is that you just can't stop straight away. You have to slowly reduce your intake and this can take awhile too. It will then get to a point where you don't smoke as much and it is only then that you should start taking patches or even stop completely.

myLot reputation of 62/100. BayleighGray (1793)  1 year ago

Im not going to give up! I just cant. Im not that heavy of a smoker, I smoke about 8 to 12 cigarettes a day. Hmm well now that I have said that maybe it is a lot! I have a friend that smokes a pack or more a day so I was thinking that was pretty heavy. Im going to check out that chantix that Ranna suggested to me. Me and my hubby both want to quit, hes actually doing better than I am. But he works a lot of hours and so he really doesnt have the time to smoke as Im sitting at home most of the day and doing nothing but! But thank you for the encouragement; every little bit helps!

Ooops! Sorry Ronna, I spelled your name Ranna by mistake.

I wish I could kick the habit as well as I have been smoking almost as long as you and have tried everything but always end up smoking again . I know others have tried and quit but for some reason I can't seem to stay quit even though I have quit a few times . Like you I wish more then anything I no longer smoked and wish there was some way to make me stop as I know it is affecting my health now and I hate the fact that I am a smoker . Although I know they will never do this, I wish they would gradully decrease the amount of nicotine and any other of the addicting ingredients in cigarettes . We wouldn't notice this and even if we did we would still smoke it and think it was just us . If they gradually decreased everything until there was nothing that was dangerous in it we would quit without knowing and would have no other choice . I know they will never do this because even though they say we should quit they love the money they are making off our habit . Best of luck in quitting, I am not sure what I can offer as I still haven't been able to do it yet but would like to tell you about a new way to quit that my doctor told me about . I am not sure of the name but you could check with you doctor as well . It is a pill that you take each day, throughout the day when you have a cigarette it is supposed to actually make you sick . I know this sounds like a horrible way to quit but I have been given some thought to it as I hate to get sick and would probably rather give up the cigarettes then to actually vomit everytime I took a drag . It is something new but they say it has good results so far . It is really expensive and right now this is what is holding me back as I am not sure if I would be able to afford it as it is more expensive then my cigarettes but it might be worth checking into . Best of luck and Take Care .

myLot reputation of 62/100. BayleighGray (1793)  1 year ago

Yes seems like most quit smoking products do cost more than it does to buy a pack of cigarettes. So that is a factor right now. I would have to say that if I threw up each time I smoked a cigarette then I might just quit as well! lol A friend of mine did that aricular theraphy (not sure of the spelling) and she did quit for about a month, but she started back up again. That was $99 wasted really. Good luck in your venture to quit smoking it looks like you have a lot to live for if that is your family in the photo. Take Care.

hey i know how difficult is it to leave any think if u want but u cannot do that think.here is one superb idea for u to leave this bad habbit first u have to make some strong dicision on it.
i mean first u have to find anyone who can slap on ur face when ever u smokes in front of him or her after few days u will be afraid of that one and in 2 or 3 months u will leave ur smoking i am sure about this idea just try u will succed in it.

myLot reputation of 62/100. BayleighGray (1793)  1 year ago

Hmmm now that would work! I could put a sign on my back that says "If you see me smoking, Please slap my face" hehe Thank you for your input Simplyman2006!

Quitting smoking or any other addiction is definitely a not so easy thing to do especially that you are used to it already, your body and system is used to it too. But like what you said, you have stopped your other addictions in life so why can't you smoking smoking? I can really understand what you are feeling because I have been in that situation too.. I started smoking like when I was 12 or 13, it was just before I entered 7th grade. But now that i'm in my 2nd year in college. I can think maturely of my actions. That is why recently, I decided not to smoke anymore. The last one was last May, it was just a puff.. What I did was I forced myself not to buy cigars, like I don't bring more money when I go to school or go out so that I can't afford to buy cigars each time I am tempted to buy one. But it wasn't easy. It was so damn hard. Day by day, from 1 cigarette pack to about 10 sticks, then the next week.. then the next month.. My body got used to having no cigars/nicotine in my system. I hope you can too. From what I have learned from quitting smoking, it is.. The earlier you decide to quit, the better. The longer, the harder it is for you .

Please force yourself not to smoke since it really is dangerous. My uncle even died because of lung cancer a year ago that's what really motivated me to call my smoking addiction for quits.. Best of luck to you.

myLot reputation of 62/100. BayleighGray (1793)  1 year ago

I tried that Meeming, not buying them. It did work but I get so tense and cranky that I just break down and buy them so I dont feel so overly stressed out! I can do good for a few days then I just go right back to it. I can really feel determined and heart set on it but I lapse each time. I started going outdoors to smoke and not smoking in my house, I even removed all the ash trays from my home. That was last week. Ive even tried to measure out a certain amount for the day but I always grab "just one more". Im going to do this! I know I can! Thank you for your encouraging words!
