Recommend a couple of good toys... | | I'm putting together a list for my parents of toys they can get my son for christmas.
My son is 5 years old and Autistic, so "younger" toys aren't always a bad thing. Some of his favorite things currently are: play-doh, legos (the big ones), hotwheels, pixter, leap pad and anything he can paint or draw with or on. He likes things that have bright colors, make noice and have interesting textures.
So far I've got some paints and stuff on the list. Also some assorted blocks, a moon sand kit, a rain stick, kaleidoscope, mosaic puzzles...
Can you recommend anything else for me to check out and possibly add to the list? I wanna get this out to my parents in the next couple of weeks.

During my childcare course we had a module on children with "disabilities" and we researched some sites on the net for things such as suitable toys etc...I couldn't remember any of the ones that I found last time so I had a quick look around and I thought if you had a chance you could have a quick click through some of the sites. Might help...might not. I hope your little boy gets some really awesome pressies! Love, light and laughter to you!

It's basically a bunch of brightly colored wire, twisted into "tracks," onto which wooden beads are strung. So you can slide the wooden beads along their track, either one at a time or as a group. The pieces of wire are bent into different shapes, so some of them will have a loop, some are straight, etc. I've always thought those were neat toys, and they're both brightly colored and make some noise, though not the obnoxious electronic noise of a lot of toys.
Also, my niece (she's 2 1/2) LOVES the new Weebles, which are much bigger than the Weebles from when we were kids. Definitely much more kid safe now!:)

| | 7. cheapterri (1080) | 3 years ago | As an education major I am a huge fan of educational toys or toys that help with motor skills. I was babysitting my cousin yesterday and we were playing with those megabloks (http://www.megabloks.com/) and they have the cutest things that stack on top. They're little characters like from Toy Story, the Wizard of Oz, and the Lion King. Also when I was younger I loved kitchen sets and doll houses, and yes I know boys who play with both. Or I'd say any kind of books, and last year I got my cousin one of those Aqua Doodle floor boards that you can color on with water.
Oh and there is this cool game called What's in Ned's Head, here let me link you: http://shopping.discovery... not sure the extent of your son's autism to know if my suggestions are approprate but hopefully I helped a little.

| | 8. oneandonemakesix (24038) | 3 years ago | what about musical toys, sometimes the stimulation and cause and effect of a cheap keyboard, drums, (bongo type things) might be good, music that he likes....
My daughter, I've been told by a psychologist, has a form of autism, but don't tell the public schools taht they want mroe funding so called her MR...but she loves music, and anything to do with it.
I find things that have a cuase and effect, like the pound a balls, discovery toys, although sometimes pricy, are wonderful for early learning, and learning development. What about the tupperware shape o ball?
I'll try to think of more, but htat's what I'm thinking of at the moment.

wiccania (2780) | 3 years ago | I've been trying to get more musical toys for him. I have a set of drumsticks a drummer friend gave me years ago that he loves to play with. We also have a couple of his dads guitars here. My son insists that the acoustic has to be in the living room so he can strum it and pluck the strings.
I'm thinking about one of those bongos sets they sell, and a few others. I've been trying to find one of those tupperware shape balls for years (I loved mine when I was a kid), but I haven't been able to find one.

ramipalo (572) | 3 years ago | i don't think this one has one, but i know what you mean, my daughter got my old hand me down. this one is like binoculars though because it's got a viewfinder for both eyes it's easier for them to see with. i have an old camera here somewhere also, but i am not sure how good it works anymore, i've been meaning to get that one out and check it out. if it works, i'd be willing to send it to you, really. but it's an old digital camera and so we will first see if i can find it.

wiccania (2780) | 3 years ago | Not at all, I think science toys are a good thing. I remember when I was a kid my older sister had this "magic rocks" kit that grew rocks. I've been wondering if that's something that he'd be interested in. He loves colors, which is why I put a kaleidoscope on his list -- a prism would probably be great, too.
