I do drink lots of coffee all day until bedtime. Actually coffee is indeed both physically and psychologically addictive. Aside from the psychological effect of withdrawal, the physical ones include raging migraine or cluster headaches (as mentioned by others), diarhhea, tremors or general shakiness of the muscles (especially the hands). If you ever doubt the additive effects of coffee (actually it seems that for many people it is the caffeine delivered to the body in a hot form which speeds the absorption of it), just try to give it up for a week. Simply drinking decaf will help a bit with the wish for the taste of the hot drink, but most people suffer the headaches at least. I have tried to quit cold turkey, but know from experience that after 40 some odd years of heavy use, I would have to wean myself from it slowly. I have visited places where it was unavailable and within 2-3 days suffered so greatly from the headaches that I cut my trip short and came home. Now on such ventures, my coffee is packed to go with me.
