My father was an alcoholic until I was about 16. I knew for 100% sure I would never marry a man who drank a lot. I didn't mind a few when out but not in the house. My husband actually was a bouncer when I met him and worked a day job. He had his share of drinks.

When we got together, he just stopped. I didn't ask him to. I had no intention of ever marrying him. But he stopped drinking completely and we did end up getting married. In the 23 years we have been married, I saw him drunk once when the guys at work took him out for his birthday many many years ago, Otherwise, he will have a glass or two of wine or a beer or two rarely when out and that's it. His choice.

He never smoked so it was a non issue.

I would NOT disregard his vices. I don't care how much I love someone, I could not live with a heavy drinker or drug addict and I would really hate to live with a smoker (but would if he went outside as I am allergic to smoke).

It isn't really a standard, it is what I can handle and a hard drinking man is one I handled for 16 years as a kid and it wasn't pretty. It was violent, abusive, and disgusting and I wouldn't subject my kids to what I went through.

my mother is an alcoholic, i hate seeing her that way everyday and i too have promised to never subject any of my kids if i would have them in the future to this kind of emotional problem
i could understand people who would drink once in a while, but to marry someone who would always be in the influence of alcohol would be a life of nightmare,
i am glad though that your husband changed.

I don't drink and I don't smoke, and both of these things are issues for me when it comes to who I'm with.

My last girlfriend smoked constantly and drank to the point of getting drunk fairly regularly.
These were definitely two factors that stood against her.
If I really loved her, would I still marry her or would I let smoking and drinking stand in the way?
To be honest if we were to get married, I would have wanted her to be willing to change a little for me. I would have wanted to come to a compromise - She could smoke, just not around me, and she could drink, so long as she tried to be more responsible with it.

My current girlfriend who I do plan to marry doesn't smoke at all, and rarely drinks. I just consider those facts two more reasons why she's perfect for me.

I don't have a 'standard' or type, but a heavy drinker or smoker is not my kind of person at all, let alone someone I would be wanting to date.

I used to smoke, and have dated smokers, but if it was at the point where they reaked, were unhealthy and spent too much money on them, it would be a problem, but not rule them out if they were 'ideal' in other areas and there was love, communication, trust and so on.

Drinking is different for me, as I have dealt with alcoholics in the past, and it's not somewhere I'd like to go in a relationship.
I like the odd drink, a wine or scotch with a meal or something, but anyone who drinks to get drunk often - no thanks.
And certainly not irresponsible/violent drinkers - there's no excuse.

Going out a lot... I guess it would depend where they were going and for how long.
I'm not the jealous type, but I do expect to spend time with my partner, so if it's going out alone 5 times a week for a few hours, I think I would tire of it pretty quickly.

It always depends on the person and the relationship, though=D

I married a man who does not drink, does not go out a lot, and does not smoke. My standard was non-smoker and either non-drinker or someone who could take all night to drink one alcoholic drink. Setting a specific standard is the best. Most people won't change because you want them to.

How can you disregard vices if you love someone? Watching someone get drunk and smoke every day, if I loved that person, it would hurt me, too. My Father smoked and drank. He gave up smoking, but kept drinking. He drank more and more. I couldn't stand him when he smoked and he was dangerous when he drank, but he was terrible when he went through withdrawal-downright vicious!

If you like the party I don't see the problem marry the guy like this.It really depend on what kind of person are you.I would not certainly live with somebody who drinks a lot, becuase I don't drink much and being around drunk people annoy me.I smoke, so I would tolerate this habit to somebody else too.

In my standards for guys I'd be willing to date, not drinking or smoking are included. I have personal reasons for not drinking and not wanting to be associated with someone who drinks, and cigarette smoke irritates my allergies. I know it's hard to find a guy who fits these qualities, but it's important to me and I don't think I'm willing to compromise over them.

I surely wouldn't date neither marry someone with these vices. I'm afraid of the effects of alcohol. I hate the smell of smokers and I can't find a good reason to stay with someone who goes out a lot disregarding me.

if a person has many vices i would not really consider to have that person as a date. i can accept a friend who has many vices but having or being with a date who has many vices i will not really like it. i really don't like to be romatically linked with a person who drinks and smokes a lot. i really don't like that kind of partner in the future. i ahve some standards for marrying or dating someone. that persn should not really be having any drinknig or smoking problems. if that person is really addicted or having too much of drinking or smoking i will be turned off with that person. i will just want to look for another prospect. i really don't think that person will be an ideal partner for me. so i will not really waste time in that person. most of the times their habits of drinking and smoking really tells more of a person. and that it really tells that person is not really dependable and maybe that person is not really a good partner. i really hate anyone who as some vices specially if they can't really control their vices. i just want a simple persn who are not into so many vices who can live without them and live like as normal as possible. i want to be married with a person who is always drunk when i get at home and who will make our home like furnace because of that smoking habit.
i really hate the smell of smoke or cigarettes. though i really have friends who drinks and smokes, i really don't join them i just talk to them. i really don't acquire their habit. drinking is a no no for me. i really hate the taste of beer. i just can't really understand why some people really like. i can't really understand what is so great with smoking. but i really don't want to judge those people who do, i just want to avoid those who has this habits as my potential partner. but we can still be friends, they just don't expect that i will be more than friends with them. i could be their best friends but i will not anymore be romantically involved with them after seeing their vices. i just to have a partner who is really responsible and who will not waste time on drinking and smoking and who will share the same interest as me.
