balut |

What's the most number you've ever eaten in one sitting? What did you feel after? Why is it widely known as "pampatigas ng tuhod?"

1. liperoterachel (10219) | 11 months ago | I am not sure, probably beer! Does that count, and I was pretty sick:) Rachel
| |
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | I think it does, when you drink it together with the duck's egg.;) Out of curiosity, though, liperoterachel, have you ever tasted duck's egg? What do you think of it? Did you feel pretty sick too after eating it?
| |
liperoterachel (10219) | 11 months ago | No, I do not eat meat at all even dairy's. I am sure they are great:)
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | Wow, are you a vegan/vegetarian? You must really be extremely self-disciplined. Yeah, Imho, balut really tastes quite good.
| |
liperoterachel (10219) | 11 months ago | I do it for health reason, but I really hate the idea of eating somethings flesh. I have no problem with people that do, infact my kids and hubby do. It ca be challenging because meat is so apart of the American diet, but over the years I have had a bit and it honestly made me sick.
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | Good thing that apart from your health, you already hate the idea of eating flesh, since it may have really helped you in avoiding it. Come to think of it, perhaps PETA activists would even be truly happy with your diet. lol... Thanks a lot for your insightful responses, Rachel!;)

Modestah (7288) | 8 months ago | I have eaten duck eggs, many times I find them quite delicious and nice to cook - the whites do not run all over the pan like a chicken egg... sometimes it is difficult to crack the shell open though. I have not, however, eaten an incubated duck egg. I freaked out once when I opened a chicken egg into the skillet and it had an incubated chick in it - probably about 17 days old, just a few days shy of hatching. poor thang.

2. onedollar (370) | 11 months ago | is that eating duck foetus? I just think it's a disgusting practise, just my opinion don't want to insult anyone
| |
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | Exactly, onedollar. Just to clarify, however, have you ever eaten one? If you have, how was it? I am sure that you don't want to insult anyone, but precisely why do you think that eating balut is "a disgusting practice?" Thanks for the clarification.
| |
onedollar (370) | 11 months ago | Because you are eating a foetus duck! It's not even a full grown duck! It's abortion if you think of it and these living creatures are boiled alive. For the same reason I think it's not good to eat lobster as they are also boiled alive. I think if you eat an animal it should be full grown so at least it had a life and it should be dead before you cook it. I think it's just a matter of respect for living things.
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | Thanks a lot for illuminating your previous point, onedollar. I do understand and respect your position as regards eating balut, even if I do not share your view.

| 3. jojobouy (61) | 11 months ago | I used to eat 'balut' when i was a child. But now, i don't have the guts. hehee.. i don't know what happened.
| |
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | jojobouy, when you were still a child and you still had the "guts" to eat balut, what's the most number you've ever eaten in one sitting? What did you think of it? What did you feel after eating it?
| |
| jojobouy (61) | 11 months ago | just 2. for me, it was delicious before.. I felt like i can have some more. hehe..
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | When you say that balut "was delicious before," would it be correct to assume that, for you, it is not anymore delicious now? Thanks a lot, jojobouy!;)

4. everlasting (8074) | 11 months ago | Balut or fertilized duck eggs are very delicious and very nutritious. When you are very tired, this could act as the tonic and regain your strength in no time. it is very rich in calcium but also rich in cholesterol. So, those who have elevated blood pressure, beware of this food!
| |
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | What a very helpfully informative post, everlasting. Given your post, it seems as if you're quite a health buff (correct me if I'm wrong, though) and, as such, I'm inclined to ask whether you know the maximum number of balut one could consume in just a single sitting, which would have no health repercussions? Personally, what's the most number of balut you've ever eaten in a one sitting? How did you feel after?
| |
everlasting (8074) | 11 months ago | I think 1 piece is enough for me. When I was younger, I could eat 5 pieces without any bad effects on me. I love it eaten with spicy vinegar as condiment.
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | I see. Like you, everlasting, I eat balut with spicy vinegar and a bit of salt--gastronomic delight!

5. raijin (6735) | 11 months ago | I guess I can down four in just one sitting, especially when it's hot and freshly cooked. I remember a friend of mine can counter that average of mine, but he does feel dazed after he finished eating them. But for me, I can still stand up and don't have any strange feeling at all because I'm used to it. Balut is rich in protyeins, that's why it is referred to as "pampatigas ng tuhod." But it is also not good for those who have high blood pressure, because of the high cholesterol it also has..
| |
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | I could just imagine how dazed your friend could have actually been, considering the number of balut he consumed. Thanks to you, raijin, now I know why it's widely believed to be "pampatigas ng tuhod." Do you know, though, why some of those who eat balut claim that the white hard part of it is dangerous to one's health, and even allegedly causes cancer?
| |
raijin (6735) | 11 months ago | I am not yet familiar with that, but I'll take some researches about it and why it was said to be cancerous!;)
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | That would be great, raijin. If you could and if it's not too much to ask, kindly share with me your findings, after you're done researching. Thanks a lot and Happy myLotting!;)

| |
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | I totally agree with you, ifinallyfoundmybaby. Just a caveat, though, make sure to be fully aware of your cholesterol level. lol... Simply out of curiosity, given your post, would it be safe to assume that you love eating penoy as well? Enjoy eating your balut!;)

acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | Good for you, eprado. Your brother may really be envious of you, considering that you could easily down 5 pieces of this Filipino delicacy, while he could only consume 2. Your take on why balut is widely considered as "pampatigas ng tuhod" seems to be very interesting and if it's indeed true, I wouldn't wonder anymore why most of the lolos (grandpas) I see eat a lot of balut. By the way, do you know why some people think that the white hard part of balut is considered, wrongly or not, as cancerous? Thanks a lot!;)

| 8. elreen14 (13) | 11 months ago | I love eating balots..
| |
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | Same here, elreen14.;) By the way, what do you find particularly lovable about "eating balots" and balots in general? What's the most number you've ever eaten in a single sitting? What did you feel after?

9. meaculpa (287) | 11 months ago | I can eat two balots in one sitting. It has lots of proteins which makes us healthy!
| |
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | I perfectly agree with you, meaculpa. Indeed, eating balot in moderation could potentially have health benefits. Just to satisfy my curiosity, though, after eating two balots, what do you feel?

10. shiloh_222 (1056) | 11 months ago | hi... i guess, a dozen, when i was in my childhood.. LOL... well, i guess because of its nutritional value jampack in just one small space...LOL... don't you know that fear factor used it as one of the taste test challenge they did a few year's back and they called duck's embryo.. other nationalities would find so darn gross but for us, we'll just say "pass the salt, pls." LOL... do you agree? ehehehe
| |
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | I absolutely agree with you, shiloh_222! If only they have tasted this "so darn gross" Filipino delicacy, especially if it's dipped in vinegar and sprinkled with enough amount of salt, then they would surely know what they're missing. Seriously, though, you could eat a dozen baluts when you were still a kid?! You're really quite something. lol... What did you feel after consuming a dozen baluts? Didn't your blood shoot up to the skies?;)
| |
shiloh_222 (1056) | 11 months ago | Actually, i never felt barfing or nauseous right after. but i wont eat that much anymore because i know how bad cholesterol is. but to assure you, i dont have hypertension coz of it, thank God... my mom would pair it with a pack of yakult. yikes, thinking back, how can she made me eat that much?!!!! what was she thinking?!! that was so unfair... LOL....
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | Now I understand. lol... You must really have a great tolerance for so much cholesterol during your younger days, considering that you "never felt barfing or nauseous right after" eating so many baluts. A dozen baluts and a pack of Yakult?! That's new. Did you try such uniquely interesting combination? lol... I wonder how my stomach would react to Yakult and balut...
| |
shiloh_222 (1056) | 11 months ago | actually my taste is quite different when i was younger. since i was high school, i stopped eating the baby duck, only the yolk...it was my mom's idea, not mine... LOL.. still love yakult though... i rarely eat it now...
| |
acmepride (652) | 11 months ago | Your statement, "it was my mom's idea, not mine," seems to be a very convenient excuse to devour a dozen baluts. lol... Drinking Yakult, if the commercial is correct, is actually good for your health, since it claims to have Lactobacilli (did I spell it correctly?) Shirota Strain. As Gabe Mercado quipped in the same commercial, "Ok ka ba tiyan?";)
