Anyone heard of new computers who won't let you copy your CDs?

I have a friend who just bought a new laptop. And he claims that they did put something on the motherboard to prevent music CDs being downloaded on his computer. Apparently you cannot access the music CD with Windows media player or any other media player. Only the player inserted in the motherboard. I still cannot believe this and I am looking for any information I can get on this.

are you sure he's not just trying to play cds with anti-copying software on them, that are either supposed to only run with the providing player or not be reconised by your computer cd drive at all.

That is what I am trying to find out. I cannot believe that they would have anti-copying software built into the computer. I have not heard of those CDs before... but it surely sounds like that is what it is.
