Columbus Day, What is it?  

Columbus Day isn't celebrated by everyone in the United States. Its a Federal Holiday, so workers have the day off. My daughter is working and I will be quite busy digging a new pond. There will be special sales at many stores, so some people spend the day shopping for bargains.

In my experience, and where we live, we do not really celebrate Columbus Day, but we do use it as a day to recognize the fact that Columbus discovered America. I believe that in the areas where it is celebrated, it has become another of those Monday bank holidays. Like everything else it is an excuse for retail sales propaganda. In my own local area it is an excuse for a history lesson.

I agree with what the others said - a day for sales and government workers to have paid holiday that we pay for. I am thankful that Columbus discovered America and wish that more people in at least the US would pay more recognition to the day for what it should be recognized for.

I don't know anyone who celebrates Columbus Day. I think the banks and post offices are closed, and that's the only way the holiday affects me. I think the History or Discovery channel might run a story on Christopher Columbus, and how his trip to the North American territory was what started the exploration and exploitation of the area.

It's supposidly the day Christopher Colombus found North America back in 1400's I think. I say "What ever - Yippee!" LOL No really, it's a great day for our country but yet it's just another holiday.

Columbus Day commemorates the discovery of the Americas in Columbus's famed expedition to the West, in which he hoped to find a naval route to India. Instead, he found an entire continent that was mostly unknown to Europe, Africa, and Asia at the time. While other Europeans had sporadically visited the Americas earlier, and there are varied theories of even earlier contact by East Asians, Phoenicians, and others, Columbus's expedition triggered the great wave of European interest in the New World. Unlike the earlier visitors, Columbus aggressively popularized his discoveries and arranged for return voyages.
