YEs I had blocked something out for years and years and when it did come back it was still unpleasant that I wished I never remebered it.

I've never experienced this as far as childhood. Now I have been drug and alcohol free for over 16 years. After I had cleaned up my act I started recalling things I had done, seen or experienced in my days a s a druggie and heavy drinker. Most were not pleasant. I had blocked them from my memory it seems. I would be driving aroun=d and recognize a place or house that I had partied at that I never knew where it was in my using/drinking days. Ugghh!

How old were you? I know that I have some memories that I have blocked and have not been able to retrieve them even with counseling. It is good to seek psychotherapy and counseling when it is needed.

So far I haven't had any experiences like that.

I think I pretty much remember everything from my childhood, both the good and the bad.

Yes. Although usually ppl block traumatic memories. I, unfortunatly go through the floodgates of traumatic memories. I understand the reasons why I blocked all of those memories.

I think the human mind is an amazing thing.

I have forget some things myself or I have tried blocking them out of my mind from keeping them secert but somehowthey always came back out.

No, I have never blocked anything out that I know of. I might have wished I could at times, but not that fortunate.. Maybe you couldn't deal with it so you blocked it out. I have an alter that seems to deal better with stress than I do... yep.. it's a coping mechanism.

I don't think that I have any childhood memories that come racing back after I have a trigger. However, I did a lot of drugs and drank tremendously for many years and things I don't remember will come back after something triggers the memory. It could be a smell, an activity, talking about something...anything really. I can't say that most of these things that come back to me are in any way pleasant to remember. I am ashamed at some of the things. I was totally out of control. So, these memories that do come back give me a sense of what I don't want in my life and keeps me on the straight and narrow.

This is actually one of my worst nightmares. I had a rough childhood. Especially in the foster home where my sisters and I went immediately after my moms death. We were abused there, apparently, a lot more than I remember. My sisters remember things that are so painful that my mind has blocked them out completely.
I am the baby and the most sensitive one of all. So, when something bad happens, I am the one who falls apart. Anyway, I remember one incident that happened when I was ten. It was so painful, that I did not remember it until my late 20's. When I did remember, I cried and cried, in anger.
The daughter of the lady who took us in had asked me to spend the night at her house with her and her daughter. The next morning, she asked me where my toothbrush was. I got scared and went to the bathroom and pointed at one and said it belonged to me. She started yelling at me and calling me a liar.
Then she took me in the back room and told me to put out my hand. She hit it over and over again with a belt. I would move my hand to my side and she said the more you do that, the more I am going to hit you. It was a horrible experience. I couldn't tell anyone, because no one cared or could do anything. My sisters were only to and three years older than me.
My sisters tell me about a time in this same home, when my older sister had to set the alarm, wake up and then wake us up. One morning she overslept and she got a whipping for that. If I actually remembered that right now, I do not know what I would do. Then, the school called home about my middle sister and the husband drug her out of bed while beating her.
There was another time, they both tell me that our aunt brought us puzzles and we got a whipping for working on them too much. There is nothing in this world that gets my more upset than child abuse. If I remembered these things being done to my sisters, I would probably snap. It is just too much for my mind to handle.
I said all of that to say this, your parents divorce was obviously very painful for you. It is normal for a child to have a hard time coping with that. There is no reason for you to feel bad. The human mind can only take so much. I guess, if you can't cope with it in your waking hours, it comes out in your dreams.

I have a huge memory block because of the trama I went through from the time I was eight till about 15 or so. But the good thing is, it can be triggered. In other words, I have a friend who can't remember anything of her childhood because of her father being an alcoholic even if her sibilings try to get her to remember, it can't be triggered back to her memory. However mine can be triggered. Such as when my brother mentioned something about our grandfather used to read books to us and suddenly all of those memories come flooding back and for that I was so happy to have remembered all of those times which are GOOD times that I don't want to forget. I don't mind forgeting the bad but the good I want to keep but the mind has a way of defending itself which forgets the whole time of the trama even the good stuff which I hate but it's the way it works.
