Procrastination...  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. vivasuzi (2203) 5 years ago

Are you a procrastinator? I am but I'm not. For example, I had stuff complete for my wedding way ahead of time, but now I have to pick 70-80 pictures for my wedding album and it's just taking me forever!!! It seems I can be fast and quick about certain things, and slow about others.

The weirdest thing is how I procrastinate about things I want to do! I want to pick these pictures! I want to make my memory book! I want to put cool stuff on my website! But I procrastinate about all these things I like to do. Any idea why? Only thing I can think of is that I don't want to do it until I'm ready to do it perfect or really pay attention when I do it so I won't start these projects when I'm tired or blah. What do you guys think? Do you have this problem?

The only things I procrastinate about is housework and going to the dentist other than I do what I say I will do but everyone around me seems to procrastinate about everything, they make so many promises and plans and just never follow through on anything, it makes me very angry.

myLot reputation of 99/100. vivasuzi (2203)  5 years ago

That makes me angry too. I only procrastinate on things that are hobbies or things that only affect me but I try my best not to over-procrastinate when someone has asked me to do something. My pictures for family parties are usually edited and posted online within a few days due to their requests! But my memory book is a couple years behind in memories :) However the memory book only really affects me so no one should get mad about it.

I tend to be the same way. If there's something I really want to do I'll usually do it right away and then if there's stuff I dont' want to do as much I procrastinate. But then sometimes there's stuff I do really want to do but I still procrastinate on that... I don't know why. Can't think of a good example... but OH yeah ok. So I have this coffee table that after months of it being not complete I finally started to complete it..I mosaic'd the top of it. But now I need to paint it or stain it and I've totally procrastinated. It's been about a year. It's ridiculous.

myLot reputation of 99/100. vivasuzi (2203)  5 years ago

Haha I can totally relate. I have these 4 shelves I bought to put up in one room. I put up 1. I really want all 4 up! and to design the entire room! But I think that since that one was difficult, I got lazy.

Also, I bought 2 sets of rods/sheers for my bedroom. I put one up last year before I even moved in to the house! I moved in after my wedding in May and noticed the sun really shines through the other window in the morning. Well now it's October and I still haven't put up the other set! That was hard too, but now I have access to a power drill to make it easier... still lazy :)

It's a shame Laziness is so darn powerful sometimes!

I sometimes do have that problem myself. For instance, I don't procrastinate when it comes to walking/feeding Laika, the dog we "co-own" with a neighbor of ours, but I sometimes take too long to write a review or an article, even though I know that I will earn some money out of it. In fact, during the current first-review sweepstakes at Epinions, I had a chance of providing the first review of a new hard-cover book I bought at Amazon. I skimmed the first half of the book with every intention of writing the first review, but for some reason I held off. By the time I wrote and submitted my review, it was the SECOND review of the book.

myLot reputation of 99/100. vivasuzi (2203)  5 years ago

That's happened to me often. I played a game and was gonna write the first review, would have gotten tons of hit. Well, I got caught up in playing the game for weeks and suddenly someone else posted. What's worse, they posted it the SAME DAY that I was about to finally post mine. It was crazy. I think in that case it's the pressure that gets me. If I feel pressured to write that review, I will not want to as much.

myLot reputation of 84/100. alexdiazgranados (505)  5 years ago

That is one of the biggest headaches about being a regular reviewer at Eps. There is so much pressure to produce reviews on an almost daily basis, particularly with the First Review Sweepstakes, that sometimes my mind will rebel and go into "writer's shock" block mode.

myLot reputation of 99/100. vivasuzi (2203)  4 years ago

Yep I've had that happen with all sorts of sites. Like on the site I currently write at, I was posting so many I thought i could do 100 this month... well... now I'll be lucky to get 50! It seemed like near the end I got lazy/writer's block/stressed about it.

I love to procrastinate. One of the biggest things that I try and push off is work. In fact, that is what I am doing right now. You would think that I would learn my lesson though, after craming to meet a deadline, but nope.

I also try and push off doing to the dentist and cleaning, like another poster mentioned.

myLot reputation of 99/100. vivasuzi (2203)  5 years ago

Well work is a different story, I try my best to get things done b/c I want them off my desk. At work stuff really only takes longer b/c I have so much to do!

Although I hate the dentist, I love it too b/c I love the reassurance that nothing is wrong. Sometimes in the months approaching my appointment, I imagine up things that are wrong. Plus, I love the clean feeling after :) However I still HATE how hard they brush, scrap and floss (ouch!!!)

Back to the deadline thing. A lot of people do better as the deadline approaches. I used to be that way in school. I'd get an A if I waited until the few days before to work on the project, but if I started too early, I would try to hard and overdo it or just not do a great job on it.

Yes. I must confess I am a procastinator. I always think that I'll do things next day, but then ... I think the same. So things to do pile up till there is no more time left and I have to do them one way or another. My wife is also a little like me: we have been married for more than eleven years, and we haven't made yet our wedding album! :)

myLot reputation of 99/100. vivasuzi (2203)  5 years ago

haha, I don't know if my mom would let me go 11 years without making it. My sister took a year which I thought was long. We don't even have to make it, just choose the pics and the photographer makes it! I can't even pick out the pics. I leave this folder "OurAlbum" open on my desktop to remind me to flip through them.... doesn't work ;)

No. I like to finish up the most important stuff as soon as possible. My principles are:

1. Work now, then rest.
2. Achieve now, then celebrate.
3. Earn now, then spend.

If the task is really huge and overwhelming, I break it down by doing a little bit every day.

myLot reputation of 99/100. vivasuzi (2203)  5 years ago

Those are really good principles and something I should write on my hand! I will get important stuff done more quickly then stuff that I just want to do though. I also like to get it done as soon as possible. I do agree breaking things into tasks helps a lot b/c then you can celebrate after each task and feel good about yourself :)

I was going to make up a list of things over which I procrastinate, but I never got around to thinking about what I procastinate about or getting the pen and paper to make the list.
I really have a problem with procrastinating. I even sought professional help and attended a Procrastinator's Anonymous Group. Only problem was... nobody got around to setting an agenda, securing a meeting place or picking a time to meet.
I have those little self-help magnets on my fridge: "Don't put off til tomorrow what you can put off til the day after tomorrow."
"Anything worth doing is worth doing later."
"There's no time like later on."
I'm OCD and I procrastinate -- that means I'm obsessed with doing nothing at all.
I was thinking about what important things I could say about procrastinating but I'll get...

I'm terrible about it but I have been trying to do better. I do my MyLotting first thing in the morning till Hubby gets up around noon. Then I go play EverQuest till around 2. I take a nap for a couple hours and then get up and fix dinner and watch a movie with Hubby. Then I play with my cross stitch charts till it's time to head to bed. This is just a typical day when I don't have anything else to do. Sometimes I skip EQ, my nap or the movie and do something else.
