How do you get cat barf off the rug?

Mimi barfed again, this time on her food dish and under the radiator nearby. It looked like mushroom cream soup --- ugh! I tried to clean it, but don't think I've removed everything. Has anyone had to deal with a similar problem? And if so, how did you get your rug clean (especially if the mess is a little "old")? I'm in the process of tearing up the rug anyway, but don't want traces of the mess around.

Right, this conversation is going to get a little graphic, if you have a weak stomach, look away now! If the mess is "lumpy" what I tend to do, is open all the windows and doors and let the mess dry. You will then find it is easier to hoover the dried "bits" up than sit there scrubbing and mashing it into the carpet! Once hoovered up, you can then clean the mess that is left behind, and give it a good scrub with febreze! Believe it or not, I have tried this method with my kitty and it seems to work. No stain, no bits, no smell! It's great. I know it may seem a little gross, leaving the mess until it dries, but it does work and that's why I open all the windows and doors! Give it a go and let me know how your rug looks! (And smells!) Good luck!

I usually wipe up the "chunks" with a paper towel and then use the foaming cleaner they make for cleaning car carpets. The can has a little brush attached that is real handy (test to make sure it won't discolor your carpet first). After the area is dry, I run the vacuum over it.
