What would you say are the advantages and disadvantages of owning a home; would you say it's better to own a home then to rent a home or an apartment? Why or why not? Myself I would say the disadvantage of owning a home is all the taxes and repairs..Advantage..it's yours.

1. kitty2 (897) | 10 months ago | we own our own home. the advantages are: i choose the paint, inside and out, i make beautiful curtains. we just added a huge roofed front deck, we already have a huge covered deck in the back, we enlarged our kitchen and the list goes on,and on. but when we have plumbing problems, or the roof leaks, it would be nice to call the landlord. but i still like owning better then renting. i get to play "home decorator'. lol

littlefranciscan (4281) | 10 months ago | When I die...I doubt very highly that anything I have will be passed on; but if it does get passed on, it will probably go to some stranger or unknown who is most in need of it at the time.. Leaving things to family can cause rivalrgy..doesn't matter if you leave something to each..sure to be a fight at the funeral.

3. faith210 (6329) | 10 months ago | Hi littlefranciscan! We own our home and I do agree with the disadvantages that you have just mentioned which are the taxes and the repair and maintenance that we have to manage. The advantage is I have something I can really call my own. Take care and have a nice day.

4. bonbon664 (1984) | 10 months ago | Pros - you can decorate the way you want you own something you gain equity you're not making a landlord rich you have pride of ownership you have your own little chunk of land for a garden. Cons - you have to shovel, and rake leaves things break, expensive things, like furnace, roof, etc. lots of maintenance more rooms, more cleaning

littlefranciscan (4281) | 10 months ago | Very nice synopsis..Might even be the best answer..will wait a little longer;) I think it is nice renting when things break as many times the landlords will replace them..you don't lose money.

5. dumblnddzzy (8092) | 10 months ago | I would much rather own my home than to rent. Why? because it is your's, you csan psaint each room a different color as many times as you want to. I'm into color & lots of it, so renting is not an option for me. I love to change things around, rebuild to suit my tastes at the time of 're-discovery'lol....Lori

littlefranciscan (4281) | 10 months ago | Well my landlords are pretty easy going when it comes to moving things around or making things like I like it.. so long as I don't tear things apart.

6. carolbee (3740) | 10 months ago | Primary advantage of owning a home is eventually the home will belong to the person who has been paying the mortgage. I can make changes within the house, put pictures on walls, paint various rooms different colors without being penalized when moving by losing the deposit. Like the privacy of a home vs. an apartment also. Can wash clothes at midnight and not disturb anyone. Have my own garage and driveway. And the list goes on! On the flip side of the coin when something needs to be repaired, it's our expense. That's not a regular problem as we do keep the appliances in good working order.

littlefranciscan (4281) | 10 months ago | I guess if the apartment is next to other apartments that would definitely be the case. My apartment is not next to any other apartment.. I know the landlords are not getting younger;)

7. book1962 (9184) | 10 months ago | Advantages of owning a home, clearly as you said, its yours, you can decorate it, wallpaper it as you please. You can do in that place what you want to without neighbours interfering too much normally. No one can get you out because of unpaid or late rent. Disadvantages, you have the incredibly high costs of maintenance, some taxes, insurances like fire or burglary which are high too. And if you dont really take the costs of maintenance into consideration before buying your home you will end up in the plumbing aging and rotting and whatever else. Because of the disadvantages I would never buy a house. I had my share of knowledge there seeing my mother bought the house she lives in 40 years ago and didnt have the cash to get all these things fixed.

littlefranciscan (4281) | 10 months ago | I hear ya.. One of my siblings is on his second attempt to keep a house..The first one was taken..as he swam in debt. This one too is near to that. He doesn't seem to administer his funds to well. Seeing that has frozen me in any thought of buying or being financed for a house. I think I would much rather rent a house or apartment.

|
book1962 (9184) | 10 months ago | my mom is not in any debt but its not easy to see that old place rotting above her head so to speak because she never took into consideration that you have to fix things around there all the time (and I am not only talking about the smaller things like wallpapering or flooring once in a time).
