Saturday Night Live - New or Old Shows?

As I post here tonight a rerun of SNL is on TV, an episode from just a few weeks ago which seems ridiculous since the new season just started. I've watched SNL off and on through the years since it seems like some seasons have just not been that great and others, like the past few years have been pretty good but I don't think they compare to the early years. Is it just that I'm feeling nostalgic for the "old days" or were the shows and the cast members better then? I loved it when Chevy Chase and John Belushi were on. Then there's Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner and Dan Ackroyd. Remember "The Pepsi Syndrome"? And the "cheeseburger, chips..." Any Saturday Night Live fans here with some favorite memories? Annie

SNL was must-see TV for me for a few years in the early 90s, with Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, Chris Rock, and of course, the great Rob Schneider (ok, maybe not so great, but I loved the copier guy). What a great run that was. I haven't watched the show much since that time, though when I do, there's usually one or two fairly amusing sketches. But not enough to guarantee I'll tune in the next week.

I've been a "regular" viewer in fits and starts through the years. This started out to be a pretty funny season but then the writers' strike happened and they've gone to reruns. One of my all-time favorite skits was when Dana Carvey played Ross Perot and he was trying to dump his running mate, Admiral Stockdale. That was his name, wasn't it? That was a classic, I laughed till I hurt. Annie

I first became aware of the show during the Eddie Murphy years since that was the first time I was allowed to stay up late on a Saturday. I loved "Mister Robinson's Neighborhood," prison poet Tyrone Green, and when they spoofed the media coverage of the Reagan assassination attempt by shooting Buckwheat. Thankfully, an independent station where I lived began showing the 30-minute "Best of Saturday Night" series, so I also got my first exposure to the original cast. I stopped watching regularly after Norm MacDonald was taken off Weekend Update and later left the show. However, I'll still tune in an episode if the host/musical guest is someone I like. The last time was when Julia Louis-Dreyfus first hosted.

I like SNL episodes from the 90s when Adam Sandler was on there. He is just so outrageously funny. I haven't watched SNL in a long time so I'm not even sure who is on there now.

I stopped watching SNL after Eddie Murphy left. Through the years I have gotten to see ex SNL actors doing films and other projects. I didn't know Mike Myers until the Austin Powers films. So it is only the old days I remember.

They had 3 episodes for the season. Then they repeated those 3 episodes. It is pretty stupid. But there are a few other shows who have done the same thing. I think SNL really went down hill in the 90's after Adam Sandler Left. I pretty much stayed true to it up until Norm MacDonald was fired. which was in 1998. I just don't think it's funny anymore. I think the writers really just don't know how to write funny stuff, because the actors are all pretty funny on their own and in other things, just not so on the show. I think they make the hosts almost always completely boring and unfunny. I miss the old saturday night live.

Ah yes...The old ones were so great!~ We used to have friends over every Sat. nite and watch it. I used to bust a gut. Lets not forget steve martin....the winer family etc. Like you, I randomly watch it now. some are still pretty funny but nothing seems to compare to older ones does it?

I never did really get into Saturday Night Live. Maybe because it always comes on late and I forget that it is on. But, I do not watch television anymore, anyway. I know that sometimes they are forced to put a rerun on if there is a problem with a cast member or something. Or maybe a guess star had to cancel or something.

I loved the old shows. Back when Chevy Chase was the newscaster. He was hilarious in his dorky way. John Belushi was crazy. Bill Murray was hilarious. Loved Gilda and her Rosanne Rosanadana act. Then I liked the next generation of Dana Carvey as the Church Lady and other characters ("Choppin' broccoli...") and Chris Farley's "In a trailer down by the river!" skit. I also adored Dennis Miller's news and Adam Sandler (who I don't like now) when he did those stupid songs and skits during the news ("I'm crazy unicorn head! Gimme some candy!"). And never forget Steve Martin on there! ("I'm one wild and crazy guy!") After that it went downhill and I don't watch now. They had some really funny skits before but now, not so much. I rarely watch now.

It'd have to be somewhere between the old and the new. I never really looked at SNL but it was through internet recording and friends on the net I found out one of their finest gems. Celebrity Jeopardy!! That...was....EPIC!!!
